So when are we getting that PSP web browser?

A web browser or any other updates to the functionality of the PSP seem to be low on Sony's list of priorities right now.

Unless someone can tell me different, it appears that the pecking order looks like this:

1. Keep throwing out security update patches to keep homebrew and other apps off the system. (1.52 patch just came out in Japan so it will probably be here in the next 2 weeks)

2. Keep pimping UMD movies at every opportunity since it seems to be their new cash cow.

3. Get around to releasing some games at the latter half of the year.

15. Work on that browser and other apps to increase the PSP functionality.

At least I have Hot Shots Golf for now. It keeps telling me to fool myself into believing I needed a PSP at launch.

Move to Korea.

No thanks. I don't want to get stabbed in my sleep by an angry Korean who might mistakenly think I'm the person that sold his Flaming Bastard Sword of Doom +1 / +3vs. undead, on ebay.

Hard to say whether a web browser is of lower priority on their list, but deploying such a thing via a firmware update is certainly a more significant undertaking than a security update. The former is a full-on addition of an application and the latter is a patch to existing code. The former requires significantly more testing to ensure it is stable, doesn't crash or cause other problems for existing PSP configurations.

The firmware updates you see right now might very well simply be the equivalent of low-hanging fruit - the kind of updates easiest to deploy in short order and in the process get a feel for how well these firmware updates go without committing a major change to one of the very first firmware updates.

Next updates better come with a geisha or I'll never ever upgrade my firmware again.
