So, who's buying Mad Max next week?

I don't know either. I clicked on that video expecting an actual review and ugh, I was disappointed.

Pre-ordering it this weekend at Best Buy with GCU. For what will end up costing me $38, it's literally going to be a steal. Also picking up MGSV.

Yep with GCU this is a no brainer for me. $10 off, $10 credit, if it sucks or I tear through it trade it back in with Best Buys generous trade values and get $30-40 bucks back making it basically a month long rental for a few bucks.

Picking it up day 1 with MGS V. It will make a nice stress release/ change of pace game as I work my way through Metal Gear. That plus Fury Road. It's gonna be a hell of a month

Like many others here I want to play MGSV immediately so atleast not going to buy at launch. Also combat in Mad Max doesn't look too appealing to me which is a shame since the game looks good otherwise.

I won't be purchasing or playing this on release day, and I will just wait for it to come to me via Gamefly. I think this game looks great, and it saddens me that Warner made the dumbest mistake they could possible make by releasing it on 9/1 against the other open world game from a beloved series. Warner has sent this game to die. Even releasing it a week prior or a week later would have been a substantially smarter decision. I've no doubt that Avalanche will be disappointed by this game's failure in the marketplace.

and I keep seeing people say Max is going to fail releasing the same day as TPP.

It won't "fail".
Might not be as big as MGSV, but it'll still be good regardless of date.
And in a way, imo, to fall along MGSV will actually help sales for Mad Max.

Reasoning:
Because talk is always free publicity. And falling along side of MGSV is (and has been) the talk of the town whenever it's mentioned. Not to forget that Fury Roads release to help refresh awareness... And generally aswell, to have a Mad Max title to sink fans teeth in.
Now if it had of falling in a free area with no other titles, it could of been bypassed.
You got to remember aswell, Mad Max 2 (Road Warrior) is an Iconic figure for alot of inspiration in Apocalyptic movies. So you'll have Movie Lover and Gamers (general and Hardcore) be buying MAD MAX.
MGSV you'll have Gamers only General and Hardcore, the average Movie Lover isn't really going to give a rats about MGSV and/or rush out and by it. So it's mainstream target is Gamers.

IMO, Mad Max will do just fine. And actually be better off to what they're probably expecting.

Now.
Yep, i'll be getting Mad Max for sure.
And MGSV.
But if i "had" to choose between the two. Mad Max would be first (for my own preference) and MGSV after (like very next payday, lol).

Either way, September def starts off with a bang for me.
The real question, is which one will i play first.
Good times for Gamers, that's for sure.

The amount of games releasing from now through September that I'd rather play than Mad Max is plentiful. Avalanche would have to create a new month between August and September and release it there for me to consider it. And this is coming from someone who thinks it looks pretty alright.

I really like the Mad Max universe and car combat genres games, so I'll be picking it up day one.

In reality I'm very excited for the game, but a voice in the back of my mind wishes the rest of the game was more of an action shooter than a Batman style combat game. That type of game play has always seemed dull to me.

I'll probably get MGS on release too for the day one edition, but I will be playing it later.

Having lived in a desert for a number of years, I will be steering clear of this with a prejudice. Deserts are REALLY REALLY boring places devoid of fun or life. Why would I want to spend my video game time there?

Damn, a 50% off before the game is even out?
Something doesn't feel right here... I'm very tempted to go for it, but I'm also more than a bit puzzled by such a low price. I'll have to give it some more thought...
For what it's worth, I bought Sleeping Dogs the week before release for $36 on GMG and it ended up being my favorite game that year.

Because this might be the closest thing to an Interstate 76 game we'll get for awhile.

If it's as good as Shadows of Mordor, then I'll definitely pick this up. WB are on a good streak with their games.

Why couldn't they release it like two weeks earlier? Even perhaps a week or 2 later.

I think it's suicidal releasing next to MGS.

TPP is the last game in a series that makes zero sense unless you've played 20 years worth of the games, it's also not anything like a sales behemoth. Mad Max will do fine. It's not going to top the NPD but them I'm pretty sure no one expected it to anyway.

This thing that GAF does when title X is releasing the same day as " title Y that I really want " is weird, it's like the forum forgets it's pretty hardcore and not all that representative of the larger market.

MGS isnt for the "light gamers" its more geared towards those who have stuck with the series or at least have a good amount of the titles under their belt.

Mad Max is made for those who are fans of the series or newly made fans from the latest movie.

Honestly its two totally different markets.

Though in regards to in store advertising for example can see MGS taking the spotlight over Mad Max just because.

iron galaxy did the Pc version of batman AK.

Mad Max is being done on PC by the main Avalanche Studio....the one that did Just Cause 2.
And they have never failed at focusing on PC development.

So while im sure you think you are hurting WB by not helping out Mad max, you are actually fucking with Avalanche, they arent exactly the biggest studio around getting a good publishing deal must have been a high point for them.....uninformed consumers hating on their game when they had nothing to do with batman, is just a sad state of affairs.

I'm aware of that and i think the PC version of Mad Max will be fine. Avalanche still gets my money for Just Cause 3 and that one is published by Square Enix.

As much as I hate EB games and their fucking ridiculous prices, I went and paid this off tonight. I was gonna buy the blu ray anyway, so this turns out to be pretty good value. Apparently it was 120 clams not long ago, but they dropped the price due to no one biting. I wonder why......

Something about this makes me doubt. Bad feeling.

The fact that it is discounted so heavily on release doesn't really help alleviate those doubts. Not touching it.

I think I would agree with this. MGS is meant to be huge, but I've never played it before, so I'm really not that bothered about it. But an open world developed by Avalanche? I'm a lot more hyped for that.

Yes, MGS V is the bigger game, but it doesn't appeal to me, so there really is not contest financially (even if technically MGS V might be the game of the year).

Releasing this in the same window as MGSV was a horrible idea they may as well have taken it out behind the shed.

one is based on a very popular movie franchise. and the other is a franchise with a hardcore following but no real mass appeal. (stealthy, weird, campy anime action game)

it might be clear which is the better release to forum dwellers. but to average joe walking around with a carboard box on your head or having horse poop mechanics probably doesn't look as appealing as thrashing around the wastes mowing people down in your tricked out death mobile that happens to be based on that sweet as fuck movie they saw earlier in the year....

but who knows.

i don't think it'll do as badly as people are assuming.

Mad Max vs one of my favorite franchises ever in the same day?

I'm sorry Mad Max, but I'll pick you up when you end up on a PSN sale. The Phantom Pain will take up the entirety of my September gaming time assuming it's as long or longer than Peace Walker.

Defo looking into it. My budget is somewhat sparse though and I've yet to decide which game to spend my money on. It's between Until Dawn, Mad Max and Madden 16 ATM

Metal Gear is 6+ million seller, you're massively Underestimating Metal Gear, MGS4 on one platform sold as well as Mass Effect 3 and Fallout 3 on 3 platforms. Mad Max is not coming close to metal Gear sales numbers.

A lot of people who jumped onto the franchise after seeing Fury Road are probably eager to play this. Guess we'll soon find out if it's gonna be two hits in a row for the franchise... or not.

What's the track record for coinciding big release titles coming from a developer?

Kojima is probably playing Mad Max right now.
Who knows
Im gonna wait on this. The game looks cool but the ubisoft-esque missions kinda put me off.

oh, i know it's popular. but i'd argue it's usual exclusivity to platforms (people buying because it's exclusive) is a factor and sales are typically slow burning.

i think mad max has much wider appeal since it caters to more people. driving game, beat em up, shooter. and then you have the franchise appeal of it being a mad max game...a game based on a movie that has recently received massive critical acclaim.

i may be wrong, which is fine, but i don't think it's release window is going to be effected much by MGSV.

This looks like a huge time-sink and I cannot do it agin right after Witcher 3. And frankly, the AC-style map is putting me off as well.

Maybe next year, and at a cheaper price. That's a big maybe, too. I think I might be done with this style of game.

People didn't buy Metal Gear because it was exclusive, that's a ridiculous notion, people buy them because the franchise is extremely popular, Sony publishes about ~25 games every year, yet only three active franchises have broken the 6 million barrier.

Saying the game sells because it's exclusive is selling the franchise short, & saying that everyone that buys it is a console warrior is ridiculous.

no, it really isn't saying that at all. it's simply the thought process behind finding value in a system in whatever it's offering.

for instance, if you owned all systems last gen, chances are PS3 was relegated to an exclusive only player. and so to find more value in said system you would buy the exclusives on it. I'm not saying something like MGS4 is bad. or that it isn't popular. i just think a lot of the sales are due to exclusivity. how else do you explain mediocre games like heavenly sword still managing to sell 2 million+? the thirst was real at that time...and people bought whatever was thrown at them

You're making the false assumption that people bought the PS3 only for exclusives as a base to your premise (Which is projecting your situation on the market), which is factually untrue, multiplats sold better on PS3 or 360 based on genre.

2 million people disagreeing with you does not make an argument, 8 million people disagree with GAF regarding Watch_Dogs, & that game is not an exclusive.
