So, who's got Radiata Stories?

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Couldn't make it to the store yesterday but I picked it up today at lunchtime, and will be playing tonight in a few hours when I get off work. Surprisingly, the hint books haven't shipped (I've checked a couple stores around Hicksville and they told me that tey didn't get any in, and they didn't even know IF they were getting any). Would like to hear some comments from those who picked up the US version - I will post impressions perhaps later tonite.

I've got nearly $90 in EB credit, and I want to get this, but I'm still playing DDS1, and DDS2 is around the corner. Not to mention we get DQ8 in November. Too much stuff.
What were the other Sept/Oct RPG releases?

Stiiiill waiting for someone to answer my "If you disliked SO3, will you still like Radiata?" question.

Because, frankly, I did not like Star Ocean 3, and I heard these games were very similar...

Can anyone give an honest answer?

What didn't you like about SO3? The battle system? Supposedly RS's is much funner to play and much better balanced than SO3's (I didn't care much for SO3's myself). And the game is more lighthearted than SO3, based on what I have read/seen.

No, I think RS's battle system was a lot less fun. I really enjoyed the feeling of SO3's, though (while many people did not). I had more fun with it than any other similar game over the past few years (such as any installment in the Tales series). It had some AI issues, but it was mostly fantastic fun.

RS is much more simplistic.

I was researching both these games...and every review/preview says the battle system is a lot more simplistic with a weak magic/combo system. The story seems rather childish as well. Which doesn't mean it isn't fun...but I don't think it will be fun for those reasons.

Anyhow, I'm going to pick up SO3 instead.

The battle system didn't hold my interest. I thought it was kind of boring - I enjoyed Star Ocean 2's a lot more. Is RS more like that?

The characters I couldn't care less about, the voice acting was TERRIBLE (and repeated too often!), and the story was just too small and cliched for me - for a game with a galactic soap opera backdrop, you spent way too much time on these generic, boring planets dealing with annoying peoples stupid problems, I just kept asking myself - why am I bothering to do this?? I wasn't emotionally invested at all.

Does RS really have that much more charm?
Will I play it - and care?

And is the battle system TOO simple, or can you really get into it?

So far I'd resign to call this story Radi-'eh..'-ta, but the production values and presentation are surely RadiAWESOME!

The simple combat engine and daftly linear/hollow environments, mixed with punctuated loading is kinda turning me off. The characters are charming, if occasionnally too childish, but the graphics, audio, and frontend are wonderful. So I'm split, but with only a couple hours of play, it could turn around. I personnally dug SO3 heavilly, and found that game immediately hooked me.

Clocked in 3 hours so far, i finished the first assignment and im guessing about halfway done with the second assignment.

I didnt really like SO3. I hated at first, pretty much played about 7 or 8 hours then i quit because i couldnt stand it anymore. I eventually came back to it a few months later and put in another 15 or so hours but i never finished it.

Radiata Stories im liking already. Its looks and sounds great. Really funny and likeable characters. The battle system is the only thing im not totally sold on. At least this early in the game its REALLY simplistic(just running around slashing things and healing with a herb if I need it) and the fact i can only ever control Jack is kinda a bummer. However, everything else is awesome and im confident the battle system will get at least a bit better once i get some new attacks and fight harder things. And even if it stays simplistic it still doesnt totally suck, and the characters, funny dialog, and awesome art is reason enough to keep playing.

Ahh, thank you.

Can you post again updated impressions later on tonight, if you keep playing?
I'm at work, and planned on picking it up around 9 ET tonight, and this is exactly the type of impression/opinion I was looking for to see if I def. wanted to go through with the purchase or not..... thanks.

(p.s. has anyone found it for less than $50?)

I like the game a lot so far. The lighthearted approach is really done well here, as it's well written and directed. Great translation and VA, too.

What were the other Sept/Oct RPG releases?

:lol :lol

September: Radiata Stories, Rebelstar Tactical Command (if you're counting that), and Lunar Dragon Song.

October: Romancing SaGa, Wild Arms Alter Code F (assuming it doesn't get pushed a 4th time), Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, DDS 2.

That's strictly RPGs though, there's also We Love Katamari, Burnout Revenge, Castlevania DoS, Shining Force NEO, RE 4, Gunstar Super Heroes, and a few other titles depending on your interests. November's also got Fable Lost Chapters, Dragon Quest VIII, Suikoden Tactics, and Mario & Luigi, along with other non-RPGs. For the first time in a long time me and my girlfriend can't actually buy all the new titles at launch, half of these will have to wait until next year :lol .

Played this today. I am enjoying it so far. It's definitely rather light-hearted... copared to SO3, which in the first 15 minutes of the game, had a whole planet blow up as its denizens were forced into an underground shelter... it's a tad slow moving right now, I am on the first mission (helping the dwarves escort some trading goods). Running around kicking things to see how they react is pretty funny. The game is lighthearted though, some goofy situations though I haven't seen anything ROFL funny (I personally prefer the Shadow Hearts style humor over basic anime slapstick).

So far, the big complaint people seem to be having is that the environments are rather linear. Suikoden 3/Fable style paths, if you know what I mean. This isn't really a problem for me, although the scenery is very nice and has a clean look to it, so I WANT to explore but am confined to the paths. The overworld runs in 60FPS and employs some nice filtering, so it's an attractive game to look at. Tri-Ace have always been good with graphics and this is no exception.

Battles dip below 60 FPS, but they work pretty well. It's more like SO2 than SO3, even though you only control Jack and when he's dead, you're dead. You can direct the other party members though I'm not sure how yet. But fighting is pretty straightforward and it's MUCH more responsive than SO3's battles. You can block, roll back, counter, and do brief combos... don't expect Ninja Gaiden level complexity but it's got a nice battle system if you're into the whole active fighting (personally I don't mind active or turn based). I am really liking it so far, even though I've only fought against bats, boars, spiders, and a dwarf I agitated by kicking him too much (and got my ass kicked).

Music hasn't really done anything for me yet... But then again the last Iwadare soundtrack I liked was Warsong on Genesis :P

Didn't start collecting the guys, but it looks like it's gonna be fun. Another thing mags say about it is that too much of the game is wasting time collecting guys and that the overall pace is very slow. But it's kind of nice to be able to do stuff at your own pace, depending on whether or not you like collecting guys, that seems like one of the main things dictating how much you'll like it.

Gonna be in CT this weekend and I don't really feel like lugging my PS2 on the ferry and risk getting robbed by the time I get to Bridgeport (j/k), so I won't get to play it this w/e... so this is probably all I'm gonna get to play for a little while.

After spending 3 hours progessing the story i can finally wander around and collect people. Ive spent the last 2 or 3 hours just wandering around the gigantic city and trying ot find some party members. I got 5 so far. 2 mage kids from the guild, a knight guy, a roguish pirate guy and some dude from a bar. Its damn fun just running around the city and meeting all the people. They all are so different and have their own personalities. Its really cool.

Combat has also picked up quite a bit. I bought some cool looking armor and bad ass spear for Jack and im stringing together 5 hit combos with it.

This is a awesome RPG, much better then SO3, at least thus far.

Still really early but I like the game more then dislike it. I've laughed out loud already at a couple of parts. Kinda reminds me a bit of Britsh Humor mixed with Anime Humor.

Battle engine could be a tad deeper, but then again i'm really early, and I expected a bit less from the battle engine then say SO3.

More on humor:
Some of it might fly over your head if your not paying attention. For example Ridley says "This idiot thinks we are going to a theme park" when the person she is talking too (Clive, southern boy who thought he was smart till he traveled) is far more of an idiot then Jack who she was refering too. Really nothing like it in the humor department, I like it a lot in this respect.

Also, regarding art, it does not bother me as much as the screens did.. no idea why. Ganz just looks hillarious, the the voice work fits quite well on most characters so far :)

I pikced this up yesterday along with Rebel Star. I've put a few hours into Rebel Star but have yet to dip into Radiata Strories but that will change this weekend. The impressions in this thread definitely make me want to play it more.

I'm still unsure whether or not to get this, I want to play it a bit first, but anyway I'll be putting off getting it (Or anything else for that matter) until I'm done with Tales of Legendia.

I want to play this because of how impressive it looks visually, but I despise that anime inspired humor. It's so insipid. It's like horrid television. It's not clever and it's not exactly childish. It feels like sop for dim witted teens.

Good visuals, better combat than Star Ocean, and is humorous.

But the extreme lack of save points, and having to go for hours in between each goal? Not cool

Alright, thanks.

I caved in and bought it.

Haven't played it yet - only opened it to look at manual/read story.

On that note... I'm mad at you Wario.

For telling me its going to be $40 after I already opened it!!!@&

Awwww well.

So I've only played so far for about half an hour, and I can already tell you right now I like it better than SO3, haha.

The game has such a nice aesthetic appeal to it, and the voice acting already is IMMENSLY better.

And it really is funny, surprinsgly.

But judging by the dead threads here at GAF, (not that that is any real indication, ha) the game prolly aint gonna do too well....... heh

I played it all last night and pretty much all day today. Im already 21 hours in and ive just been running around doing side missions and getting as many people as possible to join my party. Jack is lvl 34 right now and Ive found I think 20-25 people who have joined me. Havnt really been advancing the story that much.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time's battle system >>>>>>>>>>> Radiata Stories'

AI that is actually competent and better combat options due to the focus on only one character>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>glorified rock/paper/scissors, moves that do inconsistent damage, and watching your teammates either get clowned by easy opponents or blow all their MP trying to the same three or four ineffective moves, then getting MP killed by some weak attack

Jesus :lol .....Much hate

Now 26 hours into Radiata Stories so far. I spend 20 hours running around town day and night to get all these cool characters and then, at least so far, i lose them all because i chose to ally with the non-humans : / Ive been doing mostly story missions now and it really has unfolded in the past 3 hours. Fun stuff. Also, i think i made Jack too powerful. Ive been single handedly destroying all enemies in my path while Ridley and whatever other 2 clowns i bring along stand back and look dumb :/ I found Demonic Armor for Jack in the elf castle dungeon. It drains hp but it gives tons of armor and looks awesome as heck. All black full plate armor with a red cape :D I love how armor and weapons change when you upgrade. EVERY RPG from now on should do this!

OMFG -- I picked this up over the weekend, and wasn't ready for how fun it is.

For so long I've put down console rpg's 'cause they've gotten too damn drama-queen, the dialogue is often so cheesy-dark I just can't get attached to angsty 7th graders.

But Radiata is just some good-old swashbucklingly-jolly fun in the tradition of Skies of Arcadia. I like a game so silly and comfortable with itself, the voice actors are great saturday-morning material and there's some actual good humor in most of it.

The art is fantastic, progressive and widescreen *nice* ---- I'm just now in the huge city (8 hours in) and making my way to hiring peeps.
Really fun game, a breath of fresh air.

I just got this last week and put in about 2 hours yesterday. So far, I'm really liking it. The battles are simplistic so far, but the atmosphere, dialog, and humor are great. Some of the funnier stuff I've seen in an RPG recently and I've just started.

Also, as someone else noted, the 16:9 progressive support is much appreciated. Really looks nice.

11 hours into it, love it.

Love Jack, love Ganz..... Ridley's ok.

I love the camera angles during the cut scenes, it has a very storybook feel to it, combined with the aesthetics, its a very artful game.

Biggest complaints is the simple battle system - but it DOES get better once you can start recrutiing people and giving them commands - and the linear worldmap/dungeons.

You can close your eyes, hold down -----> on the controller, and get through anywhere.
Not that exciting, but its pretty to walk around.

If you want a game with likeable characters and a cute story, its very funny, pick it up!

Radiata Stories is a great game but the battle system is crap compared to SO3's. And if you didn't like SO3's battle system, this game's battle system is out of the question. The most appealing part of this game to me is the town which is full of life and you can recruit almost all of them to be in your party.
