Played this today. I am enjoying it so far. It's definitely rather light-hearted... copared to SO3, which in the first 15 minutes of the game, had a whole planet blow up as its denizens were forced into an underground shelter... it's a tad slow moving right now, I am on the first mission (helping the dwarves escort some trading goods). Running around kicking things to see how they react is pretty funny. The game is lighthearted though, some goofy situations though I haven't seen anything ROFL funny (I personally prefer the Shadow Hearts style humor over basic anime slapstick).
So far, the big complaint people seem to be having is that the environments are rather linear. Suikoden 3/Fable style paths, if you know what I mean. This isn't really a problem for me, although the scenery is very nice and has a clean look to it, so I WANT to explore but am confined to the paths. The overworld runs in 60FPS and employs some nice filtering, so it's an attractive game to look at. Tri-Ace have always been good with graphics and this is no exception.
Battles dip below 60 FPS, but they work pretty well. It's more like SO2 than SO3, even though you only control Jack and when he's dead, you're dead. You can direct the other party members though I'm not sure how yet. But fighting is pretty straightforward and it's MUCH more responsive than SO3's battles. You can block, roll back, counter, and do brief combos... don't expect Ninja Gaiden level complexity but it's got a nice battle system if you're into the whole active fighting (personally I don't mind active or turn based). I am really liking it so far, even though I've only fought against bats, boars, spiders, and a dwarf I agitated by kicking him too much (and got my ass kicked).
Music hasn't really done anything for me yet... But then again the last Iwadare soundtrack I liked was Warsong on Genesis
Didn't start collecting the guys, but it looks like it's gonna be fun. Another thing mags say about it is that too much of the game is wasting time collecting guys and that the overall pace is very slow. But it's kind of nice to be able to do stuff at your own pace, depending on whether or not you like collecting guys, that seems like one of the main things dictating how much you'll like it.
Gonna be in CT this weekend and I don't really feel like lugging my PS2 on the ferry and risk getting robbed by the time I get to Bridgeport (j/k), so I won't get to play it this w/e... so this is probably all I'm gonna get to play for a little while.
