Who's your trusted reviewer for games?

I've always trusted only my own taste. My childhood was a bad influence, there was no internet, and reviews weren't available. All I could rely on was my instincts, and maybe a few photos in a magazine. Mistakes happen, of course, but not often, my gut feeling usually doesn't let me down. I've even forgotten the last time I read a review or watched the video review.

Steam reviews and then watch a video of gameplay.

As much as I like people like Civvie and watch his videos, he likes some shit that I don't. That's totally cool.

Hence why I find something I like, check the aggregate user reviews, and see how it plays before pulling trigger.

I find people who call themselves "professional gaming reviewers" to be a sad joke in the year of our lord 2025.

I am relatively old school, still visit the Delphic Oracle when i need a game review or a second opinion

there are none, at least not really. even the people I generally trust have moments where I disagree strongly with their assesment.

I generally do not trust any review that is a day 1/day 0/pre-release review, as those are often on a time limit for when they need to be published and therefore the reviewers can rarely fully assess the game.

I do not trust fighting game reviews or character action game reviews aside from extremely rare exceptions from 1 or 2 youtubers thst specialize in those.
because I know not a single "mainstream" reviewer has any idea what they're talking about in these genres.

I am relatively old school, i purely source my game reviews from the Delphic Oracle

Here we have a small historical discrepancy. This institute employed the oracle Pythia, who would enter a trance (often narcotic-induced) and receive messages from the god Apollo. For the average person, these messages often made no sense, as they were simply a random jumble of words. Therefore, there were specialized people there who were tasked with deciphering and interpreting these messages. In other words, you essentially chose the ancient equivalent of the IGN as your source of information. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I don't trust any of them anymore from the big publications, too much evidence to sugggest tampering and scripts. I miss the days of EGM and the wild west of reviews. I see more value in general word of mouth.

If I had to pick one, it would be DF Retro and John's reviews of modern retro style games. I appreciate his passion and respect for older style games. His best work is usually when not comparing pixels or framerates.

Honourable mentions to My life in gaming and Gamesack, when talking about similar material. They have the same passion too.

-@Karak

-Skill Up

-Gameranx (Especially Jake Baldino).
I do watch ACG, Skill Up, Fextralife, Noisy Pixel, couple Switch channels and a few others.

I used to like Angry Joe when his bit was actually funny but that hasn't been the case for years.

Edit: Aggregated Steam reviews are usually pretty on point for me (if over say a hundred reviews at least).

And yeah, for retro reviews, My Life in Gaming, DF Retro and Gamesack are great and quite fun to watch. Also SegaLordX.

For HappyConsoleGamer, his channel is entertaining but he is always way too excited and positive about pretty much any JRPG, lol.

Myself. Why the fuck would I "trust" or rely on someone else's opinion? Only thing I look for is perhaps performance, but other than that, I buy whatever i feel like. Only idiots buy based on someone's opinion.

So hard to find someone you can trust these days. I should have know she is just as bad as Xanthippe.

HappyConsoleGamer, being a canadian I am surprised he doesn't appologise at the start of every video. But he is the exact opposite of someone like YongYeah, the master of negativity. HCG is some good positive content. Need more of him out there, less of Dreamcast guy.

HGG's videos are definitely a good watch. I just don't consider most of them good reviews. I will still watch them mind you.

Havent listened to reviews for a while. I do agree that DF especially John talks like he is about to go on his knees and blow Nintendo and Sony devs. like dude its just a game, calm down.

I did like Greg kasavin's reviews. he was cool but i was like 15 back then. Doubt i would still listen to his reviews.
his Perfect Dark Zero review will live in infamy

None, because I've never found a reviewer who has tastes that match mine. I do not want to hear the opinion of a tubby white man with no hair/bad had and bad facial hair.

You really can't trust any Youtuber anymore except for ACG and a few smaller ones nobody has heard of. Game "reviewing" is in its worst state of the last 40 years and has been bad for at least the last 8-10 years

These Youtubers are such shills. No integrity and they're being used as advertising, successfully, by the publishers to shape opinion on their products.

In my opinion if you played enough games you should know what you enjoy and you dont enjoy.

When game like Skyrim came out and people gush about the game I knew I wasn't for me so I chose Dark Souls which came out in same year instead.

I couldn't tell you because I can't remember the last time I read a review, other than dunking on them when people make threads about bad ones. How I find, and buy games, is pretty simple. Game gets announced, I see announcement, watch trailer, look at more footage as the game gets closer to release...buy or do not buy game. It literally never fails me. In fact, the only time I ever get burnt buying games is when I allow other peoples opinions of cloud my own judgement, after release, and I end up buying them later.

Game reviews only really mattered when print magazines existed and you couldn't find a thousand times more information in less time than it takes to read a single review. They had value then, they have zero value now.

No one. I don't even trust myself half of the time.

I used to really like that fat guy from game spot with glasses who did the mgs4 review for them.

I sure as hell don't trust any streamers or content creators because they consume games in a different way and only play what gets them paid.

I watch gameplay videos or play demos and make my own mind up.

I used to like WorthaBuy but I find him to be ridiculous now, He moaned about Hell is Us combat being soulslike and combat too simple and the puzzles being too easy.... based off the demo ffs, That was the last straw for me.

I don't really have a "trusted reviewer". It is just a combination of different sources. Gameplay videos, podcasts, user reviews and maybe some streamers/youtubers. I rarely read any reviews from "game journalists". After gaming for 35 years, you kinda know instantly if the game is for you or not.

I pay attention to what games people who play games I like play

That's about it really

If I just want to put a review on in the background to get an idea as to what a game is going even like I'll do Skillup, Gameranx and switch up for switch stuff

Only opinions the matter to me are friends, people on discord and gaf. I kinda stopped going to game sites when they gave RDR2 10/10s nearly across the board.

Game reviews aren't actual reviews, they're basically buyers guides and the reviewer is scoring it based on how much they think the average game buyer will like it. A 90 meta for a videogames is more akin to a 90% rotten tomatoes for a movie. It just means most people who play the game will at least somewhat enjoy it.

Influencer YouTube channels aren't any better. The tend to be overly positive on every game because if they say a highly anticipated game is trash their audience might turn on them, which means less subs and less donations. Especially if the are a channel dedicated to a specific series or genre. The spend to tell their audience what they want to hear.

Hey hey, Sseth here. Do you like video games? Do you like when video games are viewed? What about reviewed?

Today we're discussing your go to trustworthy reviewer in any format. I typically trust the reviews of Civvie 11 for shooters and Sseth for random crap.

I was listening to DF about Metroid Prime 4 a week or so ago, and I hated how he was speaking like he was writing erotica as a game review instead of just talking about the mechanics of the game. I can visually see what it looks like. I don't need word porn to describe the graphics.

Here's my two favorites:

Post a link for discovery of YouTube channels, articles, or whoever on whatever website you don't think is crappy. If you like some guy/gal on IGN, post that. Don't be shy. We won't bite.

Myself. I don't like to watch reviewers typically, nor do I follow all the online fluff about games, I'll try a game out, however I can, be it the ARRR way, gamepass, ps plus prem, etc., and if I like it, I'll pick up a copy.
