So why bother seeing the movie?

Is there anything more unappealing than a movie trailer that shows too fucking much? It's horrible. You know the ones. That spiderman 2 trailer that lasts for like 3 minutes and is nothing but quick shots of action. There can't be many scenes left out. That case is actually funny, because the trailer with Peter and MJ in the coffee shop is just so great and provokes interest while showing very little action. By far the worst offender is freakin I, Robot. I know nothing of the story, but damn that trailer lasts forever and even includes the freakin rebellion. I TOLD YOU SO

And I seriously doubt there are any jokes in Dodgeball that aren't in the trailer.

This reminds me of those old Orange County trailers. I went to see the film with a girl randomly one day... not a single thing Jack Black did in the trailer or commercials was even in the film! At the time I was kind of like WTF, but it's definitely preferable to seeing half the movie beforehand.

I think a recent culprit of that was The Day After Tomorrow... however, that was mostly due to Fox's ten minute trailer for the film. Really nothing beyond that was in the film, and anything that was was something you could probably deduce on your own anyway.

And then of course there's trailers for stuff like Garfield that would seem long even if they only lasted 30 seconds. Plenty of time for me to decide that there's no reason to see anythnig beyond that lol.

I'm afraid of that. It looks really funny, but I have a feeling they've taken the few great parts.

Devil's Advocate was a huge offender with this, if I recall. The twist at the end of the movie was used to market the film.

Wasn't this also done with that Ben Affleck movie... I can't remember the name now lol. I think it was based on a Tom Clancy book.

Just found it... The Sum of All Fears. I hadn't seen it, but I heard the climax (among other important parts of the film) were all in the trailer.

I thought the same thing before I saw the movie, but the bomb that is shown going off in the trailer is actually in the first half.

The Stepford Wives is probably the most recent example.
The trailer shows that the whole mystery behind the way the wives act is that they're replacement robots.

Yes. I'm well aware it's a remake and it's no big secret to people who watched the first one. What about guys like me though, who never heard about the first film and would have enjoyed the twist? I've never even seen the movie or discussed it with other people (until now anyway) and I know what the whole secret behind the movie is.

Believe it or not, marketing research shows that people tend to like trailers that show the important parts of the movie, even climax points or "twists".

I try to avoid trailers and reading previews of movies so I can be as surprised as possible once I see the movie. Trailers should leave something to the imagination, not spoil key points to a movie. Sometimes reading the back cover of a DVD can spoil up til the climax of the movie. Argh.

Heh, from a couple reviews I've read it seems the remake can't decide if they're robot replacements or had a personality chip implant.

Well, from the trailer I remember they had one of the wives on a table and it looked like a robot so I just assumed.

Either way, the point still stands. I just find it strange that they'll market the "twists" of M. Night Shyamalan movies to promote "The Village" and yet they'll fully reveal others. The Stepford wives isn't the first and only example, it's just the most recent I can recall.

That Spider-Man 2 trailer sure does give the entire flick away, but on the plus side, it also tells me that it's basically the same damn film as the first one, so I have little need to go see it. All the plot points are nearly identical, and considering the first was average and campy... why bother with the second?

Happened with the Iron Giant too...

"You can flyyyy?????????"

"YOU CAN FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

fuck you WB.

So many trailers these days give a digest of the entire movie. What happened to trailers that gave a basic idea and simply teased the audience into wanting to watch? On the brighter side, there are a lot of crap movies that I know I'll never have to see because I've seen all they have to offer in their trailers. :p

How about the new trailer for Anchorman? Has anyone else seen it? Unless the movie is four hours long, the trailer gives every, single plot point--with voiceover narration to boot!

Good example, the first Anchorman trailer was nice, but that second revealed way too much, and I was pissed after seeing it. I hope it's great, but they really showed a ton in that latest trailer.

I feel like the trailers for The Terminal have revealed too much as well, especially showing the scene with Zeta Jones talking to Stanley Tucci. They show the gambling, Hanks getting a job, falling for Zeta Jones, trying to help that guy win the heart of the other airport employee, etc. I feel like a lot of the little episodes within the film have been seen already.

The best trailer trailer is one that shows some highlights of the movie, while not giving all the jokes away. Why, a great example is The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra trailer! Which comes out on DVD in a matter of weeks!

Apparently some people thought so. There was a big deal about that trailer showing too much.

It's not even so much that people expected him not to get off, or thought it particularly likely, but there's a big difference between possibility and no possibility.

The trailer for Mulholland Dr. made it seem like the movie was set in the 1960s.

Jesus, can you imagine how difficult it would be to construct a trailer for Mullholland Dr?

"So, do we make it look like an erotic lesbian love story or a terrifying psychological thriller?"

While I was lucky to see the Stepford Wives without being spoiled by trailers (a first, and man is that movie twisted when you view it that way), I did see the trailer for Ladder 49, the firefighter movie.

I still believe I saw the whole movie in that 3 minute trailer. It showed EVERYTHING.

The original trailer for Alien is perhaps the greatest trailer ever made. It literally showed nothing but the title of the movie.

What about King Arthur? That scene where the army falls through the ice, damn. And then they play the dialogue just before it happens.
