SOMA |OT| I Have No Mouth but I Will Scream, on The Dark Descent into A Machine

Thanks guys.

What I'm getting is that this is first and foremost a sci-fi psychological adventure game.

yep. but there are some pretty scary parts.

I'm interested in an exact figure from somebody who has finished it and wasn't crazy about it.
Amfp was "4-6 hours" too, but I finished it in just over 2.5.
You might be right with 12 hours, but I doubt it.
think it's about 7 hrs if you just blast through and ignore most of the text, none of the puzzles should take too long. I am crazy about it though, hehe.

So far enjoying the game, definitely getting Alien Isolation vibes, and thats good. Other than a couple of glitchy moments when my screen froze for a second, seems to run well on the PS4.

Great sound as well, using Sony Golds with Until Dawn pack.

Those few moments where the screen is freezing seems to be the game loading in the next area. It's not ideal but you get used to it.

The story, the world, the narration, the atmosphere, and the sound design all feels very polished and brilliant. It's a shame the monsters feel like the weakest part of the game, but I'm willing to put up with them to enjoy everything else.

"...would be bummed out if nobody got really unnerved by the subjects that SOMA discuss."

I think this will be lost on a lot of people. It definitely fits the body horror genre. This can be unnerving or ridiculous depending on how:
1. it's handled
2. people interpret its implications.

That's how I'm feeling so far.

Yeah the monsters more just bummed me out more than anything. Like, ugh I was having such a good time just exploring! But I won't say they don't fit the theme, I just wish they were a little easier to avoid. Their magical AI is some serious bullshit....

Well fuck. Guess I'll wait for an update.

Try going to the main menu and loading a previous save. I loaded a save from around 2 small areas back and suddenly the lever was there.

Yeah definitely, it was just so existentially terrifying, you can't explain why other than to say it makes you feel insignificant and lost.

Anyone who says this isn't a horror game it crazy, also. It's fucking terrifying on so many levels... But then I'm starting to suspect it's just this game's de facto flyby post, basically Soma's version of "Dark Souls isn't hard!"

"Not enough jumpscares and Let's Play Bait!"

I did it in 7, just posting what some gaffers or reviews claimed. I didn't rush either. Just consistently made good progress. I read most notes and things I could find.

Just a few hours in and the jury is still out on this one. Gameplay is kind of meh, the ocean sequences are just awful, and the frequent hiccups while loading on the ps4 are pretty damn annoying. I'm hoping the story ramps up, as it may be the game's only saving grace for me at this point. Story wise, I've just
insterted Catherine's chip into the Omni tool
. Surely it gets more intense from here?

I read and listened to everything I could get my hands on and it was around 8.

I thought it was fairly rote after the 1st hour which I liked. My enjoyment plummeted rapidly as the game went on it just starts to really feel bland despite some attempts to shake it up and the lack of any danger whatsoever removed any feeling of tenseness. It also does nothing to elevate or incorporate new game-play systems as it goes on so the first hour is like the 8th with the smallest of variations.

I was left scratching my head on how it could be a great deal longer than that unless you were like purposefully crawling lol

I'm about 2-3 hours in and really liking it. The ocean parts aren't bothering me as much as some for some reason. The sound design is amazing. I'm really looking forward to the custom stories. Amnesia has lots of good ones. Can't wait to see what people do with Soma.

Yes. I wasn't quite feeling it until that point either, but there is some seriously good stuff coming your way

I confirm this is one of those games where you think about it when at work. Can't wait to be done with work and chores and dive back in. Pun not completely unintentional.

Slight gameplay related spoiler:
I can't help but to compare this to Alien: Isolation. As it is, my only complaint so fair is, that the monsters feel way more "programmed" in comparison to the Xenomorph in A; I. Like they have patrol routes and such. Xenomorph felt more "alive".

Can we not do this please?

"Wait until you get to part X and see the thing that was supposed to be a surprise."

"Next scene is going to be a scary one"

And so on.

Fine, but I would hope "there are interesting things at a location you would expect this sort of facility to have" wouldn't be considered too much of a spoiler

This having workshop support... Are there chances that we might get a "no monsters" mod? Are they crucial to the story? If so.. how much? I love everything right now about it, but I can see the encounters taking me out of the experience.

Maybe not, but it is annoying nevertheless. Well, to me at least. For me, facing the unknown is the best part of these kind of games. I don't want know if there are more twists. I suspect there might be, but that is part of the experience.

But anyway, let's enjoy the game, it is great!

yeah sorry

I kind of feel like this story has been told in the wrong medium. It would have worked brilliantly as a short story/novel, or even as a film if it was fleshed out a little, but as a video game I couldn't help but feel like Frictional were somewhat forced into including elements of gameplay, or horror game cliches, that actually lessened my overall enjoyment rather than added to it.

The monsters and the general malevolent force within the game doesn't really work for me. It's almost like a separate sub-plot running alongside the main themes the game is trying to deal with. It felt like Frictional came up with a great story and then just tried to force it into their tried and tested formula of sneaking around invincible enemies.

I can't fault the story though, I thought it was fantastic. The dialogue was also really good and the delivery of the lines was decent too.

HUGE fan of the Penumbra Series when it fist came out, then obviously loved Amnesia when it came out as well Frictional is one of my favorite horror developers.

But does the game get any better ? Im currently at
Crash landed and currently trying to get to Theta.
And I LOVE the sc fi setting for a horror game its defiantly one of the coolest, but the Gameplay itself is extremely basic. The start of the game introduces you to a ton of discovery/moving and interacting with objects/finding interesting information by searching and the game just suddenly drops like a brick in the first major level. There isn't objects to find or things to collect and I haven't given a second thought to any *puzzle* I have come across, nothing requires greater thinking or finding/interacting with objects like Amnesia. Trying to go off the beaten path hasn't really rewarded me with anything beside some scrapes of extra story.

To everyone saying this game isn't tense nor scary: keep playing. First hours, with
that small robot following you
feel almost like a cartoon compared to what happens next.

Amazing game. There are no jumpscares, but it only makes it better. It's a horror more similiar to Silent Hill 2 than some slender man rip off. I don't get complains about underwater parts and how some people get lost in them -
all you have to do is follow the damn lights.
And the part when you get off the
climber
is one of the most beautiful parts I've ever seen in video game.

Catherine's speech in climber; killing your "old" self; part where you have to get elevator going and there's this monster roaming around; that voice acting during ending
are my favorite moments.

How do you get through the Comms room? I think I may have glitched the game. :(

Driveby posting because afraid of spoilers:

How is the performance on PS4 ? rocksteady 30fps ?

Hows performance on PS4, any FPS drops or screen tearing or anything?

EDIT: DOH!

Yeah, I wanna know too.

Not solid 30, most of the time it runs solid, but there are very awkward hitches in certain areas that drop the framerate down significantly. Have only had it happen twice in about 2 hours of playing, but it's annoying. I'm not really sensitive to framerate, but I do notice it in those scenarios. Also the framerate drops dramatically when you get into a new area and you see the loading symbol, if you wait till it's gone before moving you should be good.

Makes sure you shut off the power in the generator room and after you do go back to the computer and turn on the power to the comms room. Was stuck here for a bit until I remembered that the computer was there.

I got by that bit, I'm in the room directly following it.

the screen says site lambda after I played with it, but no audio is playing

I'm confused about where exactly you're at right now. So you're out of the
comms room?
there's a room with a computer that has a list of the sites I can connect to. I chose theta by typing in a four digit number and solved the scanning puzzle thing and now nothing is hapening

I completely forgot about the computer for a while too! :)

Are you able to try the other sites? After you input the code you should be able to continue putting in codes for the other sites. Some give you nothing, others give you some sort of dialog. I think Lamba is the one you're supposed to connect to in order to advance the story

Yeah. I think I might be glitched. :( I exited and returned and it's saved me right at this point. Thanks for your help!
