I didn't know where to post this, but seeing as how this is one of the somewhat-serious message boards I frequent... I decided on this one.

So I head over to Blockbuster to rent some movies/games about an hour ago. It had already gotten dark. (I decided not to drive because A)it's a short walk and B)I enjoy the fresh air).

Now, the Blockbuster is at the end of a mini strip-mall, and I have to walk past the other stores to get to it.

The parking lot was rather empty, save for a few cars here and there. As I walked past the stores, however, a black car parked in a spot close to me right as I was walking by it. Naturally I turned my head and looked at the car.

There was one man in the car. He was overweight and middle-aged, with poorly combed hair and an odly colored tie. He looked right at me, nodded, and waved. I awkwardly waved back as I continued to Blockbuster. When I got there (4 doors or so away from where the guy was parked) I turned my head one more time towards the car, only to see the man holding a door open to another store and looking at me.... Odd.

I felt very odd at that moment, but went ahead into BB and picked out some movies/games. I must've been in there at least 15 minutes. When I finished, I walked outside and looked towards where the guy's car was. I could not tell if he was there due to another car being in the spot next to it.

So I walked out into the lot, behind the cars. I passed the spot, and surprisingly the car was still there, and the guy was still in it, with the door open! WTF? He looked in his rear-view, saw me, then turned and looked at me. My heart was fucking beating a thousand miles per minute, I thought this guy was going to lunge at me with a gun or something. Thinking fast, I walked back on to the little sidewalk, out of the guy's line of sight, and stood behind a rather large pillar.

He shut his door, drove to the exit of the lot, stopped for about 15 seconds (perhaps looking for me, perhaps not. Maybe I'm just out of my mind) and drove off...

I'm an 18 year-old dude, and could defend myself against that fat ass, but the feeling in my gut as he looked at me from his car was one of "GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE... NOW!"

I dunno... Just felt like typing it out I guess. :\

Actually, the fact that he described it as 'odd' at first, rather than scary, leads me to believe that it probably was a lot more scary a situation than you get from his post.

When I was in my teens & 20's I used to hitchhike, a lot, everywhere. One night I was stranded and decided to hitch home, it was about 2am and the road I was on was deserted & unlit. Not particularily scary though as I'd hitched around at similar times on similar roads before many times.

A car eventually appeared & stopped ahead of me and I got this oddest "OMG-get-the-f-out-of-here" feeling and the hairs literally stood up on the back of my neck. I found this strange as I'm not jumpy, and was used to the environment, regardless I tried to ignore it and headed for the car door, just as I got to it the driver screamed off wheels spinning, now I was mad as this had happened many times before also, jokers wanting to get my hopes up & piss me off. Then he did the oddest thing, he stopped about 800 yards away and just waited, then I got the "odd" and "fight-or-flight" feeling again, things seemed surreal and for some reason I knew I was in trouble, yet oddly disconnected from my situation & surroundings, This was confirmed when he spun his car round and drove back towards me at speed. I did what any sane person would do at this point, and ran, away from the road across a field towarsd a nearby village.

I found a phone, rang the police and hid.

Even though the village I was in was about 9 miles from the police station they arrived quickly and LOUD, sirens blaring, I got up & jumped in the policecar, they then asked me to describe the car which wasn't hard as it was a model that was easily recognisable, with one bust headlight and from the sounds of it a blown engine.

They then told me they had been chasing reports of this car all night but hadn't managed to catch him yet, they let slip that he had sexually attacked a women at the nearby town, one with long blond hair. At the time I was in Hippy mode, and while 100% male, I also had long blond hair. The story abouty the attack was confirmed in the papers a day or two later.

I have never hitchhiked since.

Point of this: I wasn't scared at any point during this, not because I'm a hardass or anything, but becuase of that "odd disconnect" - I do get scared by things, and this should have scared me fucking witless, but "odd" is probably the only word I could use to describe how I felt. A very very strange, & I believe possibly primal emotion took over that wasn't fear nor anything else I could describe it as.

now thats a scary story!

I haven't hitched much since some pretty alarming occurances, me and a friend caught a lift in the Middle of the Desert Road smack in the middle of the north island of NZ, the guys that picked us up were two skinheads with a English bull terrier in the back seat, they spent most of the trip looking back at it and shouting "PIG PIG PIG" to put this dog in a frenzy, which was standing right on my lap at the time. Then they pulled down a side road (having travelled that way many times I KNEW this wasn't the way) stopped at the dead end and told us to hop out, they then produced two shotguns and started firing shots in the air. At that point I actually thought "Fuck I'm screwed" then after a bit of clowning around they gave us a lift the rest of the way :\.

Same trip a guy picked us up in pretty racey car, was doing between 140 and 160 through town and when he stopped for gas and got out his girlfriend said "Don't worry about him hes just excited cause he just got out of prison" Opens the glove compartment for cigarettes and there is a pistol in there. In NZ pistols are pretty damn hard to come by and nobody with a criminal record gets one.

That story was only slightly creepy because I find it creepy when people stare at me also.

There's a boy in one of my classes who doesn't take his eyes off my feet all hour when I would wear flip flops to school.

Sounds like you have a lot of problems with creepy boys. Assuming I remember correctly and you're the girl who made the stalker topic. Hmm.

Hahaha. I swear on every relatives grave that that was also the very first thing that came to my mind, too.

Yeah, sometimes you just get those weird feelings/premonitions; they should be heeded imo, even if you have no idea why you get them. Happened to me twice in my life:

Once, when I was 17-18, I had just had a huge blow-up with my parents, and did my usual "storm out and go for a long walk" bit. So it's about 11:30 PM, and on the way back, I end up stopping on the parkway along the walking path, which is directly up the street from my house. If I turn straight around, I can see the face of my house and garage a block away, to give you a sense of perspective. Now, my neighborhood is pretty much crime-free (except for auto thefts)-- if there have been 10 violent crimes in my 26 years here, it's a lot. So you can pretty much walk around at any time of night and not feel threatened, and I, of course, was accustomed to this.

So I'm just standing there watching the cars speed by, and adjacent to me there's this apartment building with its entrance on the service road next to the parkway (Ocean Parkway, for those in NY), about 200 feet away . So I'm just sorta looking around, and I see this guy standing in front of the apartment building talking to some guy in a black car with dark tinted windows. Now, I wear glasses (well, I'm supposed to, but I never do :p), so I was sorta squinting to see if I knew the guy (who looked youngish), because I know pretty much everyone in the neighborhood, at least by face. Anyway, I vaguely make out that this guy spotted me, and all of a sudden the black car just peels out and goes around the corner. At first I was a bit suspicious, but I had the guy in the corner of my eye (because at this point, I started to have a bad feeling about things and didn't want to stare); I didn't start to walk away right away because I knew I had time before the guy in the car could round the block and get back to where I was standing, if in fact that's what he was going to do. So the guy in front of the apartment at first just stands there, leaning against the wooden fence in front of the apartment. So after about 20 seconds or so, I calmly hop over the partition and start to walk down the block towards my house. Well as soon as I stepped over the partition, this guy starts walking in my direction. Slowly and casually at first, but then I start to see him pick up speed (not running, but walking fast). So I pick up my pace, and after I am out of his line of sight, I just took off running down the block towards my house.

Now, I'm a big guy (even at 17-18 years old, I was nearly 6'1", and in great shape; this other guy was smaller, around 5'9" or so), and I also took kickboxing/martial arts classes for over 5 years, so I wasn't exactly used to "running away" from anything. But I swear to you, I have never had such a foreboding feeling in the pit of my stomach as I did then. So I decided to act on it. In addition, in those 30 seconds or so, I had gone through all the possible reasoning as to what was transpiring, and, given the facts (semi-late night, car w/tinted windows, secluded area), I figured they were dealing drugs (that sort of stuff DOES go on here, even though my area is pretty much violence free) and perhaps thought that I was a narc or something (which doesn't explain why the guy would come after me instead of heading back inside, but whatever :p -- maybe he was just pissed off at me for "spying" on him or something). So I'm running down this poorly lit court towards my house, and when I'm certain that I'm far away from him (I had a head start plus I was blindingly fast back then-- toot toot :D), I turned around to see where he was, and I saw him running towards me-- not a full speed, but he was definitely running. Stupid me, I saw my father looking around in the garage and decided to run straight into the house, exposing where I live. Well, to make a long story short, for the next several nights, I set up elaborate traps inside my door that would wake me up if somebody broke in-- I really thought this guy would come after me...that's how ominous the feeling I had was. I realized afterwards that I should have just run around the block once or twice to make sure I lost him. At any rate, I never saw the guy again, thankfully. But it was just...odd.

The other time I was around 19, and was coming home from hanging out with some friends around 2 AM or so on a weeknight. My best friend was dropping me off, and he lives on the block next to mine, an avenue up from where I am; so I told him to just let me off on his block (on my avenue) and I'd walk the one block over and then hook around the corner to my house. Anyway, as soon as he drops me off and drives away, and I started down the (poorly lit) avenue, I see this guy near the end of the block on the other side of the street, and it sounded like he was moaning in pain-- not as if he'd been stabbed or something, more like how you'd moan if you had a bad stomach-ache; so he's sorta keeled over on this car, lowly moaning. I can't really make out who he is or what, if anything, he was saying, because I was too far away (see, I never wear my glasses :p), but he was just kinda moving from one car to the next in (what I believed to be mock) agony. He was about 60-70 feet away from me when I just got a terrible sinking feeling in my stomach, which instantly reminded me of how I had felt during the incident I related above-- like I was in grave danger. So rather than chance it and walk past him towards my house, I decided to walk around the ENTIRE block the other way, which took some more time, but at least I felt safer. Yeah, I know, I'm a big pu$$y-- "what could have happened?", you say. But I just had a terrible feeling about it for whatever reason, and decided to trust my instincts as I had before.

These were the only two times in my life that I've felt that way, despite having been in several potentially dangerous situations before and since (walking in bad areas late at night, riding the subways in NYC late with some shady-looking characters, being near gang-related melees as they were happening etc.). It's really a difficult feeling to describe unless you've experienced it; I'm happy I listened to it instead of second-guessing myself, however. :)

I'm not sure I've ever had any real freaky experiences, at least not that I was freaked out about at the time.

I was mugged summer '03 in London though, at gunpoint, and even though I felt more annoyed and inconvenienced at the time, afterwards when it hit me, I was kinda freaked out. It was like, dude, I just got robbed at gunpoint. I've been a good deal more paranoid since then when I'm out at night alone.

Oh, and that little thing in London when I was with some other students and we were filming on a street and apparently we had been filming a drug deal in the background, and one of the guys came over and started threatening to kill us. Yeah, that was fun...

Probably the scariest situations I've had have been with cops. I just don't trust them, even when I know I'm innocent and that they can't pin anything on me. I hate being confronted by them. Guess that's what happens when you grow up in a society where cops are always shown as corrupt and power-crazed people in the media and entertainment.

The shirt only comes in one size- Large... I'm just glad that it wasn't XL, like many promo t-shirts are.

Loki: Well, for what it's worth, every time they ask criminals what people should do, they always say "trust your gut."

Two stories.
My 1st story is in Palo Alto, maybe 8-9pm. I'm walking down a moderately lit side street in Downtown (the nice part of town). I'm walking with my brother and his friend. None of us are particularly menacing appearing, but I'm obviously the wimpiest looking guy. I take out my wallet from my jacket pocket to give my brother a coupon I had brought along and put it back in my jacket pocket. Up ahead are two 6ft guys who start "horsing around" on the sidewalk. They were walking toward us earlier but are now basically shoving each other back and forth across the sidewalk. I get the gut feeling that one of them is going to "accidentally" bump into one of us and try to pickpocket a wallet...

Sure enough, 5 seconds later they try to bump into me and one of the guys grabs my stomach...see the thing was that I was prepared for it, so as they were about to bump into me, I did a 180 spin and had my fists out, Jet Li Fist of Legend style. I yelled "Hey!" The two guys suddenly "sobered up" and said "Sorry! sorry!" and ran off. To this day, I figure that they were probably on some bet rather than real criminals...

The second story was in Paris. I'd just gotten back from some shopping with the family and so my brother and I were just taking the metro back to the hotel. We are sitting next to the exit. I notice a nervous looking guy sitting across from me. I notice that he's casing out all the tourist bags on the train (aka. multiple department store bags). He's also wearing running shoes without socks... no one wears running shoes in France, and no one wears running shoes without socks unless they're really a runner.

The French metro is famous for pickpockets/thieves. We have a guy who's clearly casing out tourists (he's looking at just people's shopping bags). We have a guy who's sitting near the exit when there are other seats still available. And the shoes! I think he's a pickpocket. I ask my brother if he thinks the guy is casing out tourists' bags or if he's just a curious guy looking at the silly tourists ... he observes the guy for a bit and agrees with me.

So what do I do? I start stared him down. I'm letting him know that I know what he's up to. He starts staring back at me... the train goes through a quick curve and sort of bounces, throwing some of the people on the train slightly off balance -- doesn't faze either of us. I'm not going to let him intimidate me. I keep staring him down. Finally he breaks off. He's looking away to one of the tourists with too many shopping bags for his own good (probably the guy I'd steal from too if I were a thief) who's standing up. The guy looks back at me and then starts looking a lot more nervous. The tourist gets off the train and the guy looks back to me -- I'm still staring at him. He then gets off at the next stop.

So either I was a crazy tourist, or I stared down a pickpocket. For what it's worth, I didn't get anything stolen from me the entire month I was in Europe.
