Sonic CD Developer Diary, game comes out Dec 14th for $5/400MSP

So as far as the IOS version. Is this supposed to have that engine that a guy developed a while back that controlled perfectly? Or is it the same engine they have the rest of the sonic games available now using? If it is the same I will just grab it on PC or something

The good thing about that engine is that it's easily portable. It was not made with iOS in mind, it was made with Portability in mind, and the iOS was proof of concept. So EVERY VERSION is using that engine.

Dude, this game is built on that very engine for all platforms.

Same engine. In fact, the proof of concept video of the game was running on the iPhone.

Edit: Beaten like a dead horse. :/

Anyone know why the PSN version is more expensive than the apple version outside of the US?

Are the taxes different?

Do we have a consolidated list of the improvements?

-Created with the "Retro Engine" by Christian "Taxman" Whitehead (so basically a fan-created engine)
-Locked 60fps on every platform (thanks, drizzle!)
-Playable Tails, unlocked after beating the game once
-Both Japanese/EU and US soundtracks (unsure of ability to toggle on the fly)
-Can choose between Sonic 2-styled spindash or Sonic CD spindash
-"iOS features" (I have no idea what this means)
-Time-attack leaderboards
-Achievements/Trophies
-Widescreen support
-Ability to toggle between filters/graphics modes in real time (new vs old)
-Android version will support Xperia Play control input (thanks, redlemon!)
 
where do people generally rank CD in the Sonic series?

I was always under the impression that it was one of the best, but the announcement thread had a few vocal detractors.

My brother actually got a Sega CD and Sonic CD for Christmas the year it came out, and I do remember playing it, but that was like 15 years ago or whatever.

People can be pretty divided. To me, Sonic CD is a masterpiece. The quality of the presentation, music, game play, cut-scenes, unlockable secrets and replayability (time-attack) all blew me away. It ranks up there with Sonic 2 as the best Sonic game and while I think Sonic 2 was the most perfected, Sonic CD has so much more other neat stuff going for it.

I think of it this way:

Sonic 2 was an improvement on Sonic 1.
Sonic CD was what Sonic 1 was originally meant to be.
 
So bought next week.

Now what can I buy for 4.04? :(
 
Sonic CD is my favorite too. It's design philosophies are much more similar to Sonic 1 than the other Sonic sequels, which is why I guess I hold it in such high esteem.
 
That developer diary is with the original developer, not the single-white-coder that is bringing it to iOS.. must-see!

To me it's the best one.
 
Looking forward to this. According to pocketgamer the android version will support xperia play controls so I'll probably get that one.

I think it's decent but below the first three games. The graphic design is too busy, and I'm not a huge fan of the time travel aspect.

I hope somebody has told that to the EU PS store team. Wouldn't be the first time for them to not know what is supposed to be released. Despite my cynicism I'll probably pick this up tomorrow. Never played Soni CD before.
 
If it goes out on PC like it should, then SEGA will have gotten me the best birthday present of the year - a Sonic port actually worth paying money for, rather than going "fuckit" and emulating my old Mega CD copy again.

In my experience, Sonic CD was not universally-loved. Well, partly because a lot of people I knew did not have a SEGA CD at all.

I like it. I think the music is fantastic (especially the OP music--doesn't matter which soundtrack because both have their merits), and the level design and aesthetic is out of this world. As I noted in this post--and it can go for the other levels in this game too--the level of detail included in all of the level designs from Past to Future is amazing. The colour palettes chosen for each level were very smart too.

I'm not sure what I'd rank it, but I'm pretty sure I'd place it pretty highly just because of how unique it is and how great the map layouts across eras are.
 
Sega's doing so much right here, my god. As soon as I get the cash I'm triple dipping. A copy for XBLA, Steam, and Android.

As for the game itself, Sonic CD has always been a weird one with me. I like it, but its schizo level structure always had me thinking much less of it than the others.
 
What a pleasant surprise after charging $15 for Sonic 4. Bought.

Between the fantastic Colors and Generations, and the $5 price tag for Sonic CD, Sega's momentum is pretty strong with this franchise. Keep it up.
 
Amazed how long it's taken them to get round to actually announcing this, but still, awesome news.

My £3.59 is ready.
