Sonic CD Developer Diary, game comes out Dec 14th for $5/400MSP

Now that is a fair price. Thank god they are not charging $10 for this.

[edit] Now I am debating whether I should pick this up. I mean I already own Sonic CD on the Sega CD as well as Sonic CD on the Sonic Gems Collection on the GCN... so do I really need it for a third time? I dunno? Especially since my Wii is BC.

It's the BEST Sonic game as far as i'm concerned

It is radically different from the other 4 Genesis games in that it's based far more on exploration rather than sharpening your skills and perfecting your run., and that's where opinions get divided on it. And at first glance level design looks like a mess, until you get how the time travel functions in it. It's definitely one of the better ones, though.

Some would argue the levels are perfectly built for the Time Attack feature. Random enemy placements suddenly comes off as brilliant.

But yeah, the opinions are devided sharply. I too think Sonic CD is one of the best, if not the best.

Probably going to double dip on Steam or PS3 and iOS. I hope it's a universal app, since I have an iPad and possibly a 4S soon.

About the PC version, the Sonic 4 Brand Manager (Ken Balough) mentioned that it's not going to be released tomorrow, the release date had to be adjusted due to some outside factors and they'll announce the release date for the PC version at another time.

Hey guys,

As you probably saw, Sonic CD on the PC will not be released tomorrow. I know a lot of you are asking, and some even wondering if it was cancelled. Please allow me to re-assure everyone that no, it was not cancelled. Sonic CD will be coming soon to your PC platform.

We have simply adjusted the release date slightly due to some outside factors and will be announcing a PC date soon.

As always, SEGA appreciates everyone's support and we are very committed to our PC fanbase.

Cheers everyone!
Ken

I will buy the Steam version when it releases, in order to give support to this project, and hoping the Genesis Sonics get the same treatment some day (I'm on the boat of those who prefer those to Sonic CD, even though I appreciate the art style and music of the latter very much)..

Imagine a Sonic 1+2 combo with all the levels combined, 16:9 graphics, Tails (with flying ability), Knuckles, Super/Hyper Sonic, Special stages with smooth scaling and rotation, and a save feature.

And then they can release a Sonic3K remake to cash in with collectors money :-) (16:9, achievements and online features alone would make it worthwhile IMO)..

I'm excited to finally get to play this. It's the only classic game I haven't gotten my hands on yet.

Just be warned this isn't a "push right and run fast" Sonic. This is more like the original with careful platforming and a lot of vertical movement.

Granted, once you get the hang of the stages and the time signs, you'll figure out how to zip through these stages fast. You'll need to for the Time Attack mode.

BTW, does anyone know if all the hidden weird unlockables are still in? There was all kinds of strange artwork and such you could unlock once you get your total time in Time Attack mode down enough. There was even a way to unlock Time Attack for the Special Stages.

Good price. I played the shit out of this on my Sega CD back in the day!! We need a Move/Kinect Sewer Shark HD!!!

If it was in the original game, it's probably included here somehow. One of the pictures is even referenced in the menus, with an animated "Can I kick it?" DJ Eggman on the soundtrack select screen.

Cheap iPhone proces have worked in their favor on launch, like Sonic all stars racing. No Sonic games been less than 1.99 though!

I had 380msp in my account about five minutes ago. Now I have 480 because of that Bing rewards thing somebody on these forums introduced me to. I just traded in 125 points for 100msp and it only took me just over a week to make it. Very pleased. Oh man, I can't believe its being sold for so low. Hyped!

this game is good as fuck. the level design isn't bad, its just different. it amazes me how people will bash a game just because the mechanics clash with this preconceived notion of how the game was supposed to play before they even tried it. this is the alternate sonic 2 they were making in japan while STI was making the actual sonic 2 in america. CD's design philosophy is pretty much the antithesis of sonic 2, yet people try to play them the same way.

I love this game. I love its mental levels, bright colours, abstract art, transcendent music, its pasts and futures, its intro and ending, its silly secrets and its platforming platforming platforming.

It jointly reigns with Sonic 3 & Knuckles as the paramount Sonic experiences.

God damn right am I handing my money over for this. I'm just hoping that not a single penny goes to the incompetent Iizuka.

For those who have not played the game - imagine a sequel to Sonic 1 that decided to focus on the multi-tiered omni-directional platforming of the later stages, instead of the left-to-right speed of Green Hill Zone. Its like Sonic 2 from a parallel universe.

I hope that this game is a rip-roaring success, and that Taxman is commissioned for further projects.

MY POINTS ARE READY

Sad about the Steam version though. Hope it comes out before the Android version
otherwise I'm triple-dipping :V

Agreed. Projects that involve the classics.

My nomination for Taxman dream project - I'd like to see the definitive version of Sonic 1, merging the strengths of the excellent Master System and Genesis games into one cohesive title.

Zones would be something like:

-Green Hill Zone
-Bridge Zone
-Jungle Zone
-Marble Zone
-Labyrinth Zone
-Spring Yard Zone
-Star Light Zone
-Scrap Brain Zone
-Sky Base Zone
-Final Zone

With the Master System zones redrawn and maybe redesigned in some small ways to match the busyness of the Genesis equivalents.

As a fan of both games (and someone who treats the underrated Master System release like a Holy Relic), I'd pay through the nose for something like this.

There's a fan game that is a remake of Sonic 1 that included all of the SMS/GG levels but I don't think they were part of the main game sadly. :/

I've played every 2D Sonic (including the advance series) except for this. Backlog like fuck so i'll treat myself to this early next year.

How does the whole time travel thing work in Sonic CD? I've seen that mentioned a few times. My familiarity with Sonic pretty much is 1, 2, and the recent release (4). So is it not a simple "run, jump, and platform your way to the end"? Or is it disjointed with the time dimensions?

Sonic pros, help me.

Rub against a "past" or "future" signpost in the level then maintain 88 mph for a short time to be transported to that time period.

Time travel is purely optional to beating the game. You can visit a past and future version of each act where the layout, enemy placement, music and look will vary. If you go straight into the future there will be more enemies and everything will be in decay. However, if you travel into the past you can find and destroy the Robot Generator and this will turn all the enemies back into flowers. Then, if you travel into the future from that point all the enemies will be gone and you'll get a utopia version of that act. Boss battles (act 3) always takes place in the future however if you make a good future in both act 1 and 2 the boss battle will take place in the good future. Again, it's mostly cosmetic and is just a fun mechanic for exploring different versions of each zone. I believe there will be an achievement for making a good future in every zone.

Don't forget that now we can do a perfect run for that achievement! only time I will ever bother to do so since there is no real other reason for it.

I love it when I get an amazing old gem for dirt cheap because developers think just because it's old people won't want to buy it. This is probably the best year for sonic ever. At $5 choosing whether to buy the best sonic game ever made or not is a no-brainer
