Well, in Japan they are considered to be too cushy with publishers and advertisers etc. That led to the creation/popularity among more hardcore types of some great magazines like Game Hihyou (now long gone) back in the 90s set up specifically to be the not in the pocket of advertisers alternative to famitsu.
Famitsu's ties to publishers etc means they get decent interviews etc, the 4 line reviews are garbage though, they read like even if the reviewers actually played the game it was for a few minutes.
