Sonic Generations Announced [PS3 / XBOX 360 / PC / 3DS] - No Wii Version Official

Well, if SEGA isn't willing to give Sonic 3 adequate representation in Sonic Generations, Google Ads will!

Oh, hey, while I'm at the top of the page, here's more about the contents of that Sonic 1&2 Soundtrack some of us are interested in.

According to the Dreams Come True Shop, the CD will also feature a booklet with an interview (in both Japanese and English) with Nakamura (does not specify what he will say in this interview; I am not sure if there will be thorough liner notes a la Chrono Cross's album's either):

<ブックレット内容>
◎中村正人インタビュー(日本語/英語)
◎中 裕司氏コメント(日本語/英語)
中 裕司:株式会社プロペ代表取締役社長。
1984 年株式会社セガに入社。ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ開発当初から参加し、ソニックシリーズのエグゼクティブプロデューサーとして活躍。
◎中村正人が保管していたゲームの初期原案書に描かれていた超レアなソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグのイラストも収録。

<Booklet Contents>
- Interview with Masato Nakamura (Japanese/English)
- Comments from Yuji Naka (Japanese/English) (and then it talks about who Yuji Naka is, but I think we know who he is)
- Very rare Sonic illustrations from the initial game planning stage, stored away by Masato Nakamura.

Hey guys, remember that great Sonic game from the Dreamcast era, Sonic Heroes?

I didn't until they thought it was good enough to include in Generations. May as well have chosen Sonic R.

Is there any reason not to buy this from GMG? I can get it there for $20. Not in the UK though. Also it says Nov. 4 instead of the 1st.

Steam is going to have Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles (all of which you probably already have) and a shitty port of a port of a port of Sonic Adventure as a pre-order bonus.
So not really.

lol yeah got all those this past Summer sale. So GMG will just e-mail me an activation code?

Yeah, after such a long string of critically and commercially maligned games I'm sure they'll get the boot soon.

Oh wait.

And this, kids, is why you don't use Metacritic scores as an example for anything.
Even if they had a score of 100 they still suck donkey balls and the reviewers responsible for those should feel ashamed.

Awesome catch. Thanks for the info! I can't wait to read the Nakamura interview. He should be working with Sega again.

Haha

Uh no.

They are all competent, enjoyable games. There is absolutely no logic in the train of thought that a lack of 1 to 1 Genny Physics = Trash game. All of those games are playable and enjoyable with apt polish. What they aren't however is faithful to the original 2D games, but that doesn't make them bad games outright. Just different. Even the bland forgettable Sonic 4 isn't a "bad" game. Save the "reviewers should suck donkey balls" comments for the ones that give incomplete, glitchy, poorly coded, unplayable beta versions of games a 9.5.

Oh dear lord. I actually own that awful game but never reached the end to hear that horror, thank god for Labyrinth Zone being completely broken.
Is Labyrinth Zone actually impossible to beat in this port?

That's pretty much it. It's in the UK, so there's a good chance you're going to get it a few days late.If you don't care about that, then go for it. It's a great deal.

I hope there's lots and lots of DLC for Generations.
It'd be cool to get level packs from each classic Sonic game.

What levels would you guys want for DLC?
My choices: Flying Battery Zone, Death Egg Zone, Angel Island Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Carnival Night Zone.

Assuming they actually make new assets for DLC on this one instead of just routing you through areas they didn't use in the main game levels (hi unleashed), Spring Yard, Oil Ocean and Ice Cap are mandatory. Sandopolis would be neat too.

Hmm, Quite a few from Sonic 1 would be good like the Marble Zone and the Star light zone.

Apart from those, I'd love ice cap zone, flying battery zone, lava reef zone and even a boss battle against Knuckles in the Hidden Palace zone would be nice.

I know it won't happen but if they chose to remake Sonic 1 - 3 + knuckles, Sonic Generations classic levels would be a nice starting point. Since it won't be a carbon copy of them but at the same time, it will feel rather familiar.

Sonic 3 would have to get dedicated levels, so I'd choose Lava Reef Zone or Ice Cap. I wouldn't choose Hydrocity because, outside of the music, the level was very simple and actually boring in some places. Lava Reef and Ice Cap have a lot more variety

Outside of that I'd like to see Green Forest, Dragon Road and Sweet Mountain in DLC.

I just want to say: take a look at previous OPs for big releases - Halo: Reach, MGS4 - and look how they convey the game from the header all the way through. The 'theme' of the OT is key because it sells the game to those undecided.

Also, make sure you can update it very regularly pre- and post-release. Check out the Reach OT for his this should be done IMO.

And despite the temptation, I would recommend not using non-Sonic or Tails character art (Silver, Shadow, etc) for anything other than a single "Rivals and Bosses" section or something. You do not want to reinforce the mistaken perception people have that this is another "play as "shitty friends"" game.

Thanks for the tips. I think we already got a good theme going.

Robbie is the one making the thread and compiling all the info, so he will be able to update it a lot, I'm just helping him out with visuals.

btw sent you a PM so if you could reply to it that would be great! ^^

I doubt they'd do packs from each game, it's more likey that they'd break them up by era. Given that, these'd be my picks:

Classic
Star Light Zone
Mystic Cave
Ice Cap

Dreamcast
Twinkle Park
Green Forest
Hang Castle

Modern
Kingdom Valley
Dragon Road
Starlight Carnival

+1 for Twinkle Park. Would absolutely love to see what those guys would come up with for that zone..

Again, people seem to misremember Ice Cap completely I think. Awesome music, pretty boring zone, with Act 2 being vastly superior to Act 1.

And yeah, I've been championing Mystic Cave for a remake from the beginning. Would be a great stage to revisit.

Oh hey, they finally gave Modern Sonic his own Mushroom Hill arrangement.

I don't... hate this. That bass is sexy. Can't speak for everything else, but bass is an instant plus (it's one of those instruments I like to latch onto so I might be biased). It's quite catchy too. With regards to the gameplay, the level looks kind of sparse. It looks nice, but it doesn't seem to be doing much for me gameplay-wise (it's kind of boring).

Edit: Sonic still kind of walks upside down, but I am no longer surprised at this point.

Are the SFX supposed to that obnoxious in MHZ?

Also, that Big Arm boss music is always really nice to hear. :D
But the gameplay doesn't seem to be doing much for me, I guess. I just want this for the music and aesthetics.

That video makes me want the 3DS OST... The game?.. Not so much. :\

At 8.00 theres a part where you have to boost up a vertical wall, the wall has a lip at the top which makes Sonic go back on himself, but then he flings up from it vertically straight?.. What? I think I'll need some of whatever Dimps are smoking before I can contemplate trying the 3DS version lol

I think the player is overlooking that mushroom platform that's suppose to send you up.

But yeah, Mushroom Hill looks really bleh. What a shame because it was one of my favorite zones. :/

That sure is a Dimps Sonic game.

Looks okay so far. Not great, but alright. Will probably grab it when it gets a little cheaper.

That's part of the reason I think it should get the Generations treatment. Great music, a memorable setpeice in the snowboarding intro, nice looking environment. It'd be interesting to see what they could do with it.

The 3DS version is interesting I guess, the levels seem too empty (especially modern Sonic's Mushroom hill). It has the potential to be a solid outing but not spectacular, are classic Sonic's stages the same as the originals in that demo?

Music is great though, I can't wait to hear Emerald Coast.

Nice to see the boss looks a little harder. You can just see where Dimps is missing the little details, though. In the console versions, when you jump up platforms, you jump up in front of them LBP-style. Here in Mushroom Hill Sonic clips through them pretty clumsily. It's not as bad in the Green Hill part, so maybe it's a question of manual polish work necessary. In the videos of Sky Sanctuary, there's a checkpoint that is automatically set to trigger even if you take the high path, here the player just goes above the checkpoint a little and it doesn't toggle, they'd have to go back to get it.

It's kind of been bugging me why Classic Eggman is on the end of stage signposts when all we've seen is Modern Eggman (but I figure there's some kind of reveal or plot reason in store); here the signposts just have Modern Eggman even for Classic Sonic.

I like the "layer" changes in Mushroom Hill, but the way they animate feels really unnatural.

Oh, I just got to the Classic version of Mushroom Hill. Bad sign that it showed off something broken just a second into the level.

One last thought, I kind of hate how they think every flying enemy now has to make some loud humming or buzzing noise. Not exclusively a problem with the 3DS version, just unnecessary. Not that the 3DS version has a shortage of overkill, goofy sound effects.

I think the OT's subtitle should be 20 years and still unstoppable.
Or if you want
At long last, Sonic IS back

I love how they leave in that pre-boss checkpoint in Mushroom Hill without a boss.

One thing I hope they do if they're giving it more time is redesigning the classic levels. Really? Just copypasta the originals? Ugh. At least combine them all into one act so there's one decent-length classic level.

Good point, that is pretty stupid-looking considering there's just one loop and then the ending of the stage. Maybe they took something off the end of the stage for the trade show demo, though, it wouldn't be the first time. But that might be giving them too much credit, given how much of a mimic of the original stage it is.

The 3DS version has some really nice music! And the game itself is looking passable, nothing awful or game-breaking at least. Obviously the HD version is the star of the show here, but hopefully that rumored delay will spruce up the 3DS version a bit more.

They're even more obnoxious, louder and unnecessary in the 3DS version. If anything, they take away from the soundscape. It isn't as noticeable in the HD version, so it seems like they went overkill here... or there's a huge issue with the audio mixing in this game.

I'd like to know who did the arrangement for Modern MHZ, though. I really like the bass. <3

Its like Dimps are emulating Sonic Teams timeline of "Greatness to failure", just on a much smaller (portable) and less dramatic scale.

The Advance games are thought of as being generally good for the most part and were well received, some people adore them even now. You could say this was Dimps' classic era of great 2D Sonic games. Much like the Genesis days of Sonic Team....

Then hardware improved somewhat and Sonics evil nemesis "3D" reared its ugly head (Yes ok, even if only in terms of character models lol bare with me) in Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure. Dimps introduced stunts and boosting which is looked back on now with hatred. At this time the reviews were still good (for Rush at least) and people still enjoyed the games for the most part. As time went on these games were gradually remembered less fondly.

Kind of like when Sonic Team went '3D' for the first time with the Adventure games. ST introduced the homing attack and grinding which is looked back on now with hatred. At this time the reviews were still good (for the Dreamcast Adventure releases at least) and people still enjoyed the games for the most part. As time went on these games were gradually remembered less fondly.

Then Dimps went on to do Sonic 4, which could be looked upon as the Heroes/Shadow era for them, the game sold pretty well but is hated by hardcore fans who are now tired of Dimps' lazy ways and reluctance to embrace the 'good old days' from the previous decade. The resentment stems from them including new gimicky gameplay mechanics such as physics based weirdness and a 2D... Homing attack. Much like Sonic Team refused to stick to the basics which made Sonic fun in the first place by including gimicky gameplay mechanics such as team based weirdness and... Guns.

Sonic team then went from the PS2/GCN/XBOX gen to the Xbox 360/PS3 gen to create SONIC 06. The game was utterly broken and filled with terrible bugs. It seemed the development was rushed, obviously in order to get the game out in time for the November release date for Sonics anniversary year. It had great music though.

Dimps then went from the DS gen to the 3DS to create their next game. This game looks to have a few.. Problems but is still in development, although the ....November... launch date is looming due to this being.. Sonics.. anniversary.. year... The music sounds ..great though...

Ladies and gentlemen. Sonic Generations 3DS.

(cant comment on DS Colors I've as never played it so have no idea whether its good or shit. This post isn't serious lol)

Say what you want about 3DS modern Sonic, the animations are pretty smooth..almost Colors quality. Big Arm is much improved since the last (two?) time we saw it. Still optimistic.

Imo, for the stage clear themes, every era should have used whatever clear theme the original game had. I really miss Sonic1/2's clear theme.

Conservative wish list for DLC:

Ice Cap

Red Mountain

(I don't see them adding DLC for 'modern' stages when they could just get people to buy those games instead)

Less conservative!:

Ice Cap
Hydrocity
Stardust Speedway

Red Mountain
Sky Deck
Pyramid Cove

Is it just me, or does the classic Sonic gameplay in this actually match the real classic Sonic gameplay better than in the console versions?
Probably has something to do with the maps for the Classic levels being 1:1 replicas of the original stage.
