Sonic Lost World |OT| Too X-treme for the Galaxy

hmm not really worried about these impressions. I got my Wii U version preorder cheap and there's a lull of games to play between Oct 29th and Nov 22nd.

8 AM EDT tomorrow I believe.

It's different and depending on how much interference there is between the GamePad and the Wii U. For example, my walls are kind of thick or there's a lot stuff in the way, so I can't really take it out of my room and go into another room.

If I played it somewhere else with less obstructions, I can certainly go into another room and play from far away. It just depends.

The 18th at 4:00 AM EDT. It was in the first post after the OP:
Awesome, looking forward to it.

I love how when negativity sets in it gets contagious.

From the stuff I've seen, the gameplay looks ok; I guess maybe it pisses people of that the 2d levels don't seem very complex.

I've heard many people love Generations, did that game have an awesome final boss?

No, it had a really bad final boss. Most found it to be annoying and not fun. In fact, I'd say most people were disappointed in Generations' boss fights save for Perfect Chaos, Silver, and Shadow. Mostly because of how easy they were, too, though.

Nope, good point. Which is why I'm sure I will enjoy this game regardless of the bosses. They were clearly the weakpoint of Generations.

By the way, let me just say that I really enjoy the main theme of this game. Even that has a Galaxy feel to it. :p

Should have gotten the 25 extra lives!

You jest but I could've used these, I just got a game over due to Owls, there's a joke in here somewhere. I found out this game has a super guide sort of equivalent that teleports you to the next checkpoint, the shame, I didn't know that was going to happen upon seeing the powerup, my precious red rings!

I did not enjoy Frozen Factory much on a whole, for those fearful of game length fret not for I spent 15 minutes trapped in an optional pinball table so that's like three stages worth of time right there, and to think I was looking forward to the casino stage. Rhythm is also a really lame wisp, contrary to its name it requires no rhythm to use successfully. Homing attack is also really getting my goat.
WELL THIS POST IS JUST JOLLY! game's still fun but it can be frustrating at times.

The boss fights in Generations were one of the few things about that game that weren't disappointing. The final boss was god awful, but that aside I felt the bosses were pretty good.

So I've only beat the first world so far (and the NiGHTS boss rush stage thing) and It's not instantly grabbing me. Seems like I'm missing something when playing. Having trouble getting a line of enemies to lock on and it just feels off. Looks great though.
not instantly grabbing me like Colours or Generations. I think I just miss that style of 3D Sonic.

Might just take some time getting used to it. Though WTF is up with the animal containers not having a homing lock on thing? Makes them much more frustrating to hit (I understand the end of level one not because it's for bonus points).

No but at least it was climactic. The final world in lost world is hard as shit. It took the streamer forever to beat it. Then the final boss shows up and you think its going to be epic.
But its literally a re skin of the final colors boss and the streamer beat it in under a minute.

It almost makes me think that the budget was reduced on this game because of poor wii u sales. I can't think of any other reason why they would do what they did.

My experience after the first world was similar. Trust me, the game gets better. First world is fairly medocre. But the worlds that come after instantly grabbed me and I adore the game.

As for not being able to homing attack animal capsules....really? That's a real complaint. Alrighty then. They're not hard to hit. This isn't Sonic Unleashed here. Landing jumps where you want is pretty damn easy. Just jump on them. It's not that hard.

I keep popping in on various Twitch streams to check it out and it looks really good each time I do. Definitely keeping my pre-order.

So, what's the general consensus? Should I keep my pre-order?
If you really want to play it, it's probably best to make the judgement call yourself. Don't let other people make the decision for you. People can certainly review and give impressions, but when it comes down to it, it's still ultimately you who makes the final judgement on whether or not you like it.

If you're on a budget, it's a different story, and you should primarily go for the games you're sure as heck you want. If Lost World's one of them, try it out. I do certainly hope there's a demo released in a near future (ie: next week) for people on the fence.

You jest but I could've used these, I just got a game over due to Owls, there's a joke in here somewhere.
Poor owl being taken out by other owls. It's a form of bullying, I tell you.

Seems like a yes as long as you don't expect Mario Galaxy quality.

Why in the world would anyone expect Mario Galaxy quality? That would be like expecting Watch Dogs to be GTA V quality. As long as a game is good for its genre and what it sets out to achieve then it's a worthy purchase. Not every game has to be as good as the benchmark in the genre and I don't see why anyone would expect that.

I don't know why you would, but it seems like the fact that it kind of "looks" like Galaxy is making people expect a 9/10 game. At least that's the impression I get from various forums. Personally, I'll be content if its as good as Colors/Generations, because I enjoyed both a lot.

Saw the Nights into Dreams level, wanting to check it out... @_@ felt incredibly trippy I had no idea what I was going into after only finishing the first/prologue level.

Imo, Sonic used to be on the same level as Mario before he plummeted in quality. I just want Sonic to give Mario a challenge again. But Sonic Team just cant seem to go from a good game to an amazing game. Hell, recently, Sonic can't even best Rayman.

Also, length doesn't bother me at all. People raised a stink over Generation's length and I was just happy we got 18 stages without any padding. Good stuff.

Agreed 100%. I remember back when Unleashed came out hearing that the Day stages took so long to make compared to the very short time it takes to beat them, which is why they padded it out with Werehog garbage. I'm glad that with Colors, Generations and now (presumably) Lost World, Sonic Team has just said "fuck it" and made short, extremely replayable games.

I bought Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Colors in preparation for Lost World. Not because they are anything like it, but because they are the three Sonic games I've never played before.

Sonic and the Secret Rings would be pretty fun had the motion controls been more reliable, and had that terrible fucking song not played every single time I go back to the main menu.

I haven't started Black Knight, and I'm afraid to. But it was $5 so I don't care if it's terrible.

Sonic Colors is way better than I thought it'd be. Seriously, super fun, but I have only done three Acts so far, so it's a bit premature to call it great.

Good for that then. :p

Colors always irked me...I didn't like how sonic controlled at all. He felt very floaty compared to other sonic games, and I never really moved past it. Good game, though.

The Galaxy games are masterpieces to me. I'd never hold any game to that expectation unless it was warranted.

The Rayman games have been good, but I'd put Donkey Kong Country Returns over it. I'd like to see a full on 2D Sonic game NOT MADE BY DIMPS. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Sonic Team want to go in; yet.

Sonic has probably been one of the most experimental franchises out there, that may be due to them not really finding something that works on all levels yet. But to me it is sort of exciting, not knowing what the next Sonic game will be like. As much as I want them to find something that works and play it safe from there, I also like each game being completely different than the other. In a perfect world, we'd get a balance of both.

I think the reason Generations left a much more sour taste in my mouth than any other Sonic game, mostly when talking about length, was that it was marketed as being the ultimate celebration of the series but it barely ended up being that. It gives you the illusion that it's going to be some amazing voyage through Sonic's past and with the writing team behind Colors there was some real potential to be had.

In the end that never happens. The game is short as hell and it seems like they never really attempted at making things look connected. It doesn't even really have a story. The only real standout moments that the game offers is the Chemical Plant cutscene, the one where the two Sonics are in that limbo-esque world and the pre-final boss cutscene. Even all of those feel like they could have had a lot more weight to them. The most annoying games with stories in my opinion are those that have the potential to have them and somewhat touch on the ideas but never do anything with them, and that's Generations in a nutshell.

The ending in particular is ridiculous. The game has a final boss... and then suddenly things are back to normal as if they never happened. It's like the entire story is a long drawn out joke with the punchline being Sonic's Chili Dog.

That white hub felt like an accurate representation of the game as a whole. It was a bunch of decent-to-good levels thrown together without much thought to tie things together.

I hope Lost World can at least be better than that, even if it screws up it's endgame. I want some consistency and weight in my games, dammit.

I haven't played Generations, but Secret Rings is the most fun I've had with a 3D Sonic these past years. It has its problems, but as you advance in the game and get abilities, it's really cool and surprisingly faithful to Sonic's legacy when it comes to momentum and all that.

I found Colors half great, half mediocre/bad, the physics and level design get really, really poor. The good levels were pretty cool though.

Can't talk about Lost World yet, embargo and all that.

Sonic and the Secret Rings
the controls will be much better once you start unlocking more abilities. Backing up is still a pain but generally if you need to back up you should really start the stage over anyway.

Keep with it though because once you start playing around with your ring setups and going for golds the game gets really fun.

Starting to think that Lost World taking a little time to get used to might actually sound better for me. Rayman Legends has almost felt a tad bit anemic only because I was able to instantly pick it up and breeze through most of it in a few hours, so this being a little bit more challenging will be great.

Why do you give a shit about the story in a sonic game?

Got both versions this afternoon, will try the 3DS one later.
For now, the Wii U one is alright. It takes getting used to after playing so much Generations and Unleashed, but it's not bad. Maybe I still need to run into the bad parts. Cautiously optimistic!

Does anyone know how to keep a Spindash going, by the way? I can charge it and go fast for a few seconds, but I've seen people continuously keeping it at full speed in speedruns and I have no idea how to get that done.

[EDIT] Figured out how to hold the Spindash. You gotta charge it, release, then quickly tap and hold the Spindash button again to keep it going at full speed

I asked people to try to be a little nicer and respectful of each other in the OP. :(

My supposition is that it's because they had the Colours writers on-board to write the dialogue, and the trailers did give off some emphasis on narrative (even including cutscenes that weren't in the final product) to give some semblance of a longer length or justification for the Time Eater's existence outside of the pre-final boss fight infodump.

Recall that ever since Sonic 3&K, story did seem to be a little more emphasized in Sonic games, which in turn led us to the Adventure games, Heroes, the storybook titles, Colours, Unleashed, Generations, etc. They do have cutscenes that carry forward the game and lead us to newer Zones and boss starts. Like it or not, but even in the Genesis games, while the narrative was loose and communicated via cutscenes, it did carry the game forward and did lead the player to Zones that narratively made sense.

Not that I agree with that. I may play RPGs a lot and other things, but narrative is one of the smaller things in a game for me... however, I can certainly see where people are coming from when they say they were dissatisfied with the level of narrative in Generations given that they did hype up that the "Colours writers" would be onboard and a lot of the cutscenes in the trailers giving off a more narratively-driven vibe. It's not difficult to understand their position.

Got both versions this afternoon, will try the 3DS one later.
Looking forward to your 3DS impressions cuz I haven't heard much about that one yet.

I guess it just boils down to the fact that of all the big platformers out there (Rayman, DK, Mario, Sonic), Sonic games are by far the lowest in overall quality even though he's arguably the second most recognizable character in the genre. And they have had two full console generations to get it right. They should be pros at this by now. But instead, they are stuck in this good, not great level.

Why do you give a shit about the story in a sonic game?

Because Sonic shouldn't have to settle for less, and I'd argue that the Death Egg trilogy of the Genesis era actually had a really well put together adventure sub-story. It wasn't exemplified but it was clear that it had a start and culminated with a fantastic finish.

Colors barely had a story but that game felt infinitely more complete in progression and consistency than Generations did. It actually had an ending, and it felt like the game was actually going places. It's more satisfying to play a game if it's consistently building up to a satisfying climax.

In Generations you're placed in a hub world with a bunch of levels that have no sense of connection or consistency, and at the end you fight a random monster that we've only seen twice in the game. A great game should offer context, challenge and gratification. Generations had mostly the second and only shades of the third, but none of the first.

Still no demo. Does Sega just hate America now? Maybe it's Nintendo. Maybe they can only put up so much data today so it has to go to Clu Clu Land and Urban Champion. XP

Before anyone makes a response, no I don't think Sega hates America.

Dude it's Sonic Team. A good game is outside the norm for them. A 6-7/10 game is their average.
