Sonic SATAM back on tv (UK)

DiC, the company that created the shows, tried to release a DVD box set, but Sega put their foot in the door.

They never were specific why, but its largely because Sega doesn't like the way these cartoons represent their character, who is drastically different today then the way he appeared 12 years ago.

Nope its Disney. They bought DIC a few years ago (see:Inspector Gadget the Movie) when DIC bought themselves out of the deal the Sonic SATAM package was one of the shows that stayed with Disney (essentially it wasn't bought back). They managed to release 1 DVD

and had planned more but Disney got wind and stopped it. As far as I know that's the official line. The arguement about representation would have seen Sonic Underground not being released but then Sega Europe has different attitudes to Sega America.

You're right, it was the Disney company, though, it is pretty well known that Sega of America isn't very fond of the 'darker' Sonic TV show. I guess if anybody wants to see more DVDs of Sonic(or any other Disney property like Duck Tales or Tale Spin), they'll have to go out and buy the Gargoyles DVD. Apparently if that does well, it'll open the door to a flood of other Disney-related TV show sets.

SonicMegaDrive: And yet they allow DVDs to be released of AoStH (admittingly closer to the games) and Sonic Underground (totally, way off base compared to the games, even further than SatAM)... And SatAM is the one everyone _wants_. It just makes so much sense on their part...

Ian: About the same time in the early 90's, two different Sonic cartoons were created, as an experiment by Sega.

One that aired during the weekdays, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (AoStH), was mostly a budget affair that stuck closer to the style of the games (but not really that well, still), with Sonic and Tails running around, foiling comical schemes by Eggman (back then he was called Dr. Robotnik exclusively in the US). A few of the episodes stand out as excellent, but many just had cheap animation, weak plots... it was certainly alright if you were young or a big Sonic fan, but it wasn't about to win any awards.

The other one, simply dubbed "Sonic the Hedgehog," was designed to run during the Saturday morning cartoon block. (It's referred to as "SatAM" to avoid confusion.) It used characters Sega of America made up, but tweaked them to their preferences (getting rid of ridiculous color schemes, like Pink Sally, after the promo episode), and was really an interesting combination of pretty good animation and adventurous plots, with the second season feeling quite a bit like an extended movie. The closest comparison I can draw is Gargoyles, although it didn't get that serious. (But it was far more serious than most cartoons on at the time, they managed to balance a cool action series with emotional sequences you could understand, like Sonic desperately trying to wring himself from his friends to get back to his Uncle, who was roboticized and lost all control over his actions, when his friends are holding him back, knowing nothing can be done at the time.) It really left an impression with some people, and thus there's quite a large set of Sonic fans who got into it primarily because the cartoon was excellent.

Apparently Anchor Bay, the Uk group that released Sonic Underground are the best bet. But SATAM fans bombarded their forums with requests so they're a bit pissed off right now. I know Underground was distributed by Buena Vista and aired within a Disney show in the UK and still got released so maybe there is a chance. This current airing of SATAM is within a show called Up on the Roof but I don't know if Disney own that show.

I heard that satam stopped when they were going to introduce Knuckles (which is probably why he dominates the comics so much) and kill off Robotnik (!) Do these episodes continue from that, or are they just reruns?

man, i miss this series... at least somebody record the episodes on the tv, and post a torrent... I really want to see th e shows again..

Just reruns. Ben Hurst, one of the writers, kept in touch with fans, and to my knowledge, here's what was supposed to happen in Season 3:

The eyes were Naugus. (I know, I was hoping for Metal Sonic, myself.) Robotnik didn't die, Naugus had saved him without Snively knowing, and using Robotnik as his lackey (much to Robotnik's anger), Naugus takes over Robotropolis and becomes the main foe for a while. Snively has to escape, and eventually, after a rough period, ends up joining the Freedom Fighters. (It sounds cheesy now, but I'm sure the transition would've been natural in the series.)

Presumably, at some point later, Robotnik finds a way to usurp Naugus and regain control.

Knuckles was set to appear in a single episode, but wasn't really planned to be a reoccuring or major character. (They didn't know how popular he was going to become with the fans.)

What's really interesting is that about the time that these cartoons started, Archie began to produce its Sonic the Hedgehog series, which is still produced monthly today.

At first, the comic followed more closely to AoStH (the weekday cartoon) but also added the SATAM character roster. It really didn't work all that well. So, around issue 12 or so, the comic began to adapt the SATAM style, which was much more serious and plot-oriented.

In fact, many people look at the comic as the continuation of SATAM because it adapted most of its stories into its own continuity. It's actually a very good blend of the SATAM show and the games.

The book is now closing in on issue 142. It's had 25 special issues, a 32-issue series starring Knuckles the Echidna, and five 3-issue mini series sets.

And, of course, there continues to be lots of Sonic Manga in Japan. There was the long-running, European-exclusive Sonic the Comic (different from all others), a full-length Anime, and FOUR different cartoon series: AoSTH, SATAM, Sonic Underground, and Sonic X.

The upcoming Sonic X special should be interesting. American 'Made up' characters meeting 'Authentic' Japanese Sonic Team approved characters.

Sonic The Comic was amazing, I collected them for years from issue 1.

They had a Shinobi comic in them and a Streets Of Rage one aswell as the awesome Kid Chameleon and Wonder Boy.

Ive still got them in a box somewhere but have no scanner :(.

It airs at 6.55am on GMTV 2 on weekdays and replaces AOSTH. Started today.
It isn't just me. Yippee!
Also, the series is available *cough* on the Internet. :)

Watching the series over there seems to be another level of humour.

Sonic - "Is grass green? Is water wet? Do bears...
Sally - [cuts in] "Sorry I asked!"

Antione - "I am a master of King-Fu!"
Sonic - "Well KING go fu someplace else"

Just me?

In the original TV series only Sonic Tails and Robotnik were official characters, the rest were made up by either DIC or Sega of America. There are some fans who think that only what Sonic Team says is official like the Adventure games and Sonic X. I was just commenting on characters created by the west for a 10 year old interpretation of the franchise combining with the 'Official' version of the Sonic franchise in the form of a western made comic book with its artistic style influenced by the east.

Oh, you mean the upcoming 3-4 issue Mini-Series comic about Sonic X, yeah?

That won't have any crossover material present. It's just straight out comic devoted to Sonic X. NO SatAM or AoStH stuff. They might also end up making it a series alongside the current line. It's being done by a completely different set of people instead of the current writers / pencilers too.

I didn't mind Sonic X, but would have rathered a more direct approach to the Sonic line, rather than stick him in another world. I mean, Knuckles didn't even get his island back for more than half the series, and that's his whole purpose in life.
