SONY Computer Entertainment believes it can sell about $100 million worth of its new PlayStation Portable entertainment device in the lead-up to Christmas.

Sony yesterday firmed up Australian launch plans for the PSP, which has already sold five million units since it debuted in Japan in December last year and the US in March this year.

Billed as a games device that doubles as a mini movie and music player, the 100g PSP features a 16:9 ratio, 11.68cm LCD screen that can display 16 million colours. The sharp and bright screen, coupled with stereo sound, gives the PSP its mini-movie theatre credentials.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia chief Michael Ephraim said the company expected to sell between 200,000 and 250,000 units, at $399.95 a pop, in the lead-up to Christmas. The device goes on sale here on September 1.

The company is hoping for much better early PSP sales than for its PlayStation 2 games console, which had Christmas sales of about 60,000 units when it launched here in November 2001. Microsoft predicted sales of 100,000 in the first three months for its Xbox console that launched here in March 2002.

250,000 for Australia?

Last I looked, average weekly sales were 10,000 a week for Xbox and PS2.

Factor in the launch hype and subtract by the price being 50USD higher than the US price, and even higher if importing for Japan.

I wish it was that light, it's more like 280g. The DS and PSP are both a little tougher to play for long periods due to the extra bulk.

For a manufacturing shipping means sold.

The goal isn't too lofty though. 200-250k isn't a huge number, but maybe for the price it is.

60k per month (or 15k per week) isn't too lofty.

Here in Australia I would think it is....$100m worth sold is impressive.

Considering that the DS broke Australian launch sales records with 19K the first week and was only half the price of what the PSP will be, I think it is.

All I can do is laugh at this. Shame Microsoft hasn't started advertising the 360 down here yet, that would surely have stopped a few PSP sales. $400 is just too much. Sony own Australia, and the public don't even know it.

No point advertising as Xbox 360 is launching March 2006 in Australia.

Wait, So Sony is expecting to make $100 Million (AUD) from the PSP this year? :lol

Last time I checked, the PSP is releasing for $399.95 AUD (308 USD).

100,000,000 / 399.95 is 250,031

Sony would need to sell EVERY UNIT to break the 100 Million mark. Thats not to mention that selling 250,000 units this year is laughable, that'd see the PSP jump ahead of the GCN and DS combined easily. The PS2 sells what? 350,000 here each year... (Its around $200 cheaper, too)?

You people need to get your facts right. Sony doesn't sell directly to consumers (website purchases aside). They sell to distributors. SO, its 5 million sold as far as Sony is concerned, regardless of internet fanboy bitching. Additionally, if retailers were unable to move those units to the end consumer, they wouldn’t be purchasing bulk supplies from Sony. Demand dictates supply. Get over it.
