Sony announces partnership w/ KojiPro, New IP, 1st game "console exclusive to PS4"/PC

Even if the earth were stripped
of life and reduced to a barren wasteland, our imagination and desire
to create would survive - beyond survival
it would provide hope that flowers may one day bloom again.
Through the invention of play, our new evolution awaits

KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS

We are Homo Ludens
We are those who play.

Only Kojima could make his new studio's mission statement read like an address to the Earth from an invading alien civilization.

Btw I am not pleased with console exclusivity. I have always believed that Kojima needs all that exposure by going multiplatform, guy is a crazy visionary. You may not like his work but you can't deny he is one of a kind in the industry.

Then again, it's better he is making an exclusive than no game at all. Still sucks for PC/Xbox guys.

If Sony is footing the bill for the game(which would be my guess) then it isn't unreasonable for the title to be PS4 console exclusive.

The wording makes it sound like a PC version will also come out.

This is the real ace up Sony's sleeve this gen: bringing legendary Japanese Devs back to life and promoting modernized Japanese gaming in general. The abandoning of support for Japanese games in gen 7 in favor of "western style" games was a huge mistake that the core gaming market took note of. I am just glad that they learned from their mistakes.

This.

Year of dreams continues.

It will probably be on PC. Like most of Sony's third party deals.

As someone who has also been victimized by the fucking cesspool of human garbage that calls itself Konami these days, I really could not be happier for Kojima and co.

Man I never seen Sony move that fast before.

I'm assuming this has been in the works for some time, and it's why Konami worked to scrub Kojima from everything so as not to promote his new endeavors.

It's the kind of pointless behavior that only makes sense to a Japanese corporation, because it's not like you can put that genie back in the bottle.

Random musings:
-- I imagine there's going to be a VR component to this game
-- I wonder if Sony catered to Kojima's well known passions and leveraged the breadth of their enterprise to close the deal by involving Sony pictures to do a related film/TV production of this new franchise?

Well, the logo does look a bit like a futuristic VR helmet with someone inside who said goodbye to the real world. Your second comment is interesting... I could see a del Toro collab, where they each give input on their game/film. Though Sony hasn't historically been very collaborative between their divisions.

TotalBiscuit is towing a truck full of anti-console salt on Twitter over this. Holy shit.

It's not anti-console salt, it's anti-exclusive salt and I sympathize. I very much agree with his point that locking a game down to one or two platforms shouldn't be a cause for celebration even if you do own said platforms. Today you're happy because your favorite platform "won", tomorrow you'll be sad that you won't be able to play a game that you're interested in without spending hundreds of dollars on yet another gaming device.

Bearded Kojima just nuked everyone.

I haven't played a Metal Gear game since Sons of Liberty but this is fucking awesome. No more Metal Gear. On to something new.

So the guy makes an independent studio only to get his first game bought out? You'd think he wouldn't want to be beholden to a large corporation anymore.

I forgot how you guys got fucked over by konami with vanilla skull girls

Nope, his first tweet is anti exclusive. The next few are very anti console.

No, he has been fascinated with the evolution of man recently, specifically homines.

MGSV's
Saelthantrophus
and Homo Ludens, which is a play on homo sapiens.

Not only do I get to post this amazing gif here on GAF, but I can also say how thrilled I am to hear this amazing news and share the joy with you lovely people.

What a time to be alive.

There aren't any more people that need rescuing are there? As of now everyone of note is free. God I'm so happy.

Well Konami forces their staff to change e-mails every couple of weeks in an effort to make it hard to contact them for poaching so it's probably much easier this way.

Also frankly not everyone is going to know everyone in a 200+ person studio so some would be harder to reach than others.

I can see Konami losing a lot of people .
Well that is if they have that much left away .

Have we unpacked that logo yet? I see a Roman helmet, a MSF skull, a front view of a revolver cylinder, a side view of a pistol, maybe some vague mech-like things, housed in some Alien-esque Giger style helmet.

Am I crazy?

Nobody is celebrating. However it is important to have some basic maturity and understand that if Sony is a publisher willing to put money on the project it has to be exclusive. Maybe next time Kojima should contact TotalBiscuit when scouting for publishers and he will be able to readily find some other third party publisher who is willing to give Kojima the budget ASAP and who has a great working relationship with him

If so, I dread to see what happens next gen. I mean, I doubt I'll be hearing "FIVEHUNDREDNINETYNINEUSDOLLARS" again anytime soon, but that was the least of Sony's 7th gen issues.

Lets just live in the now. Sony systems have like 10 year life spans or something anyway. We've got a ways to go.

I wonder what Contra and Gradius team members are still there...maybe they can move on as well?

Amazing news, I cannot wait to see what they do. Big props to Sony for this, they really do have some of the best people putting deals together for them. Long live Kojima, and fuck Konami.

Those tweets are making me thirsty!

Kojima wants to make games that can reach a wide audience, I know Sony is partnering up with him but it's more than likely to come to PC as well given Kojima's statements.

So the guy makes an independent studio only to get his first game bought out? You'd think he wouldn't want to be beholden to a large corporation anymore.

Kojima's loved his Rockstar status since MGS2, and while smaller games have come out under his watch (Boktai, Lunar Knights, ZOE), I have to imagine he wanted a big-ass pay check as soon as possible to get started.

He's definitely anti-console. Clearly says in one of his tweets how his consoles collect dust because they are 30fps garbage.
