I don't understand projection that well but how is this true? Aren't almost all cinema screens/projector screens white?

Yup, in fact, the video is quite honest, just watching some YouTube video impressions of this thing and it is exactly as in this official video. I think that what he means is that you can't project black (since it's the absence of any color) in a well lit room when projecting on a white surface, but that's only partially true.

Sounds pretty damn cool. And $1500 for something like this is hardly eye popping. Eye popping is $15,000 for a plasma tv in 2004.

Not saying that like I'm in position to buy this thing, I'm not and even if I was I probably wouldn't. But, just sayin

And remember 4k TV's and their ridiculous price some years back?

That's cool! Could be good for classrooms and presentations

This, I think it's fun that companies still put this stuff out

How do they deal with shadows? Like if my finger is pressing a button on the table and my big fat hand obscures all the lower functions?

Sometimes Sony just makes something for the fun of it, just to see if 1) It works; 2) There are any takers whatsoever.

Yeah, Sony has been pretty good at creating showpiece technologies that they can then sell or license out to other companies. Some have been very successful (CD, Blu-ray, camera sensors), and some haven't (MD, Betamax, Memory Stick).

As a proof of concept this is cool.

If they intend to launch this is is an absolute show of hubris and waste. There is no current practical application for this other than show and entertainment.

This has existed for a while. Seems like a little step up.
