Sony Camcorder and PC connection issues

Ok, need some assistance...

I am trying to connect my DV camcorder to my PC so I can edit some home movies and what not... Now for the life of me I cant figure out why my PC is not recognizing my camera, and why the program I use is telling me that no capture device was recognized...

I installed the USB drivers for the camera from Sony's site, restarted my PC, and then connected my camera via USB cable, and it just sits there, my PC will not find it...

I have a Sony DCR-PC9.

Does anyone have any information they can pass along that might get it to work...

Thanks

I had the same problem with my parent's Panasonic. Eventually I just spend 10 bucks in a Firewire card and used that instead, problem solved. I suggest you do the same since very few capture programs recognize usb anyways.

Speaking of which, can anyone recommend a good capture program to capture movies and then burn it to dvd? I have been using Nero to capture and burn dvds and Microsoft Movie Maker when I just want to make a WMV. Will I get better quality video using another capture software or is it all the same?

well the thing is, I have a firewire port on my laptop, its the small type connection, not the larger round on one end connection...

Anyway, that is how I normally connected the camera and when I had a desktop it worked fine, the camera would be recognized, and I would be on my way...

However for some reason, when I connected both the firewire or the USB, the PC never found it...

I was using Pinnacle Studio 9, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Nero Vision Express. None of them found the camera...

Am I doing something wrong?

Well I don't think any of those programs recognize video through usb though I could be wrong about that. As for it not recognizing the camera through the firewire connection I have no idea why it isn't doing that.

By the way, what program do you recommend for capturing DV video to get the highest quality. The quality from getting it from Nero is shit.

ok Sorry to bump this, but I have a question...

When I started this post, my camera was not being recognized by any of the software I was using. When I loaded Adobe Premiere nothing happened, and then when I loaded up Pinnacle systems Studio V9.4 it said that there was no capture device connected to the computer. Now since my camcorder was being connected directly to my firewire port on my laptop could that be the reason why none of the software programs were seeing it? I was thinking of going out and getting this, but I wanted to know what my options are first.

Look at the 1394 section in device manager.
Seems like a driver issue.

I don't know what to say. When I stick a digital camcorder into the firewire port it gets recognized by windows media maker, pinnacle, and any other capture program I use.

I don't know if this is your problem, but this was something that I had a problem with on my Panasonic camcorder (from not reading the instructions). There was a "PC" setting and I assumed that was the setting I needed to use to get playback on the computer, but it didn't work until I put it in the normal playback mode that you use for the tv. Since I don't know much about the newer Sony camcorders I don't know if that is your problem too.

On this sony, all you have to do is put it in VCR mode and if it is connected to the PC, the PC will recognize it and then the pinnacle software will begin capturing the video..

I need to look again when I go home.

It's a Sony!

When hardware isn't recognized by several apps that are supposed to interact with said hardware...

It's the drivers.

Also, there are several sets of drivers for any capture device (WDM).

You haven't installed everything Mr. Spaz.

There is ONE cd that came with the camcorder and that has USB drivers on it. I installed those, and even pulled newer ones from Sony's site.

Also, when I was using this camera on my desktop, I dont even think I ever installed drivers for the camera. Ijust plugged it into the PCI firewire card I got with my pinnacle studio and away I went..

What other bright ideas you got for me. Mr. Spaz

I confused you w/ Isamu. He used to have that avatar I thought.

What is your device manager saying? Any yellow '!' marks?

Unless camcorders have changed, you need firewire to capture video. USB is for still pictures.

Camcorders have changed, a few of the newer models can output through usb now too.

I don't think many programs support that yet though (and no one is sure about what kind fo quality you will get through usb) so firewire is still the way to go.

I have no yellow ? or !

Its just so weird. I am going to try again tonight and see what happens. Everything that I own that can be plugged into that laptop whether its through USB or Firewire, the laptop finds it instantly, but for some reason, not this friggin camcorder. I need to fuck around somemore. If worse comes to worse, I guess I can get that studio 10 kit with the USB device.
