Sony doubles Apr - Jun sales in 2008

Reuters reports:

Sony says Apr-Jun PS3 sales more than double yr/yr

TOKYO, July 29 (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Tuesday it sold 1.56 million units of its PlayStation 3 game console in the April-June quarter, up from 700,000 units a year earlier.

Sony, locked in a three-way battle with Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd in the videogame industry, also said it sold 3.72 million units of the PlayStation Portable handheld in the three months, compared with 2.13 million units a year earlier.

The company has left unchanged its targets to sell 10 million units of the PS3 and 15 million units of the PSP in the year ending March 2009. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka)

New on Reuters. Sorry if old on GAF :(

EDIT: Sorry for typo and missing PS3 in topic, can a mod fix it? Posting from work with people looking over your shoulder sucks.

Numbers ninjas can use NPD/Japanese sales data to find how many consoles were sold in Europe during those 3 months.

I can't be arsed to because I'm lazy.

USA April: 187K
USA May: 209K
USA June: 406K

Total for USA: 802K

So it sold the other half between Japan/Europe.

Yeah, and probably about ~200k for Japan...(just a guess off the top of my head with about 10k sales per week except for the bump MGS4 week(s) received).

so....around 600k for Europe?

WTF @ the PSP numbers. That cannot be true, can it?
It probably is. PSP has been selling like crazy the last couple of months. Sadly the software side isn't really selling, aside from the Monster Hunter games.

"SONY's gaming division made a profit of 51 million dollars for the quarter ending June 30th , 2008 "

Didn't see that mentioned.

Well I know that it's been selling like crazy in Japan with around 50-70k per week.

But in America it sells less than the PS3 usually.

3.72 million (PSP) vs. 1.56 million (PS3)....just does not compute for me.

let's say that the PSP sold about 50k/week in Japan for 3 months, that's roughly 600k units. PSP in America is less than 800k (PS3 sales), which leaves 2.32 million for Europe???? It really doesn't make much sense to me.

About 300k I think, so 500k for Europe?

So they're posting a profit now?

Since EU received Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on March 28, this includes the GT5P boost I presume? To some extent anyways. So these figures contain both the MGS4 and GT5P boost for Europe.. 600K -- I don't know if that's impressive or not for Europe.

They're not really locked in a three way battle as the article says. It's mor like a battle for second. Nobody can catch the Wii now.

It's good to see Sony's numbers improving. Well deserved imo/ They promised a lot with the machine and it is all slowly coming to fruition.

Perhaps Southeast Asia may be the missing component in the picture here. SEA doesn't contribute alot normally to consoles because of the wage levels here and the amount of piracy going on. However, PSP is the dominant portable console for alot of people for example in Singapore. Even OLs (Office Ladies) often have a PSP of their own! Every single carriage on the subway train often has at least one PSP player minimum.

Of course, none of them are playing real games.

in australia they almost sold out of the 35 thousand free ps3's they were giving away with bravia tv's this month. On top of what would have been sold at retail, thats pretty damn good for AU

Aslong as the people they gave them away to invest in BD and games then its a decent investment in the long run.

What? I know it's not equivilant to npd but it's pretty cool to see it outsell Wii on a big site like that even if it only lasts 1 hour.

It's been like that for a few hours actually, but a certain someone got banned for using Amazon numbers in a sales-age thread once...

Okay so here is all the interesting info for those of you who don't read financial reports.

Operating Income of 5.4 billion yen (USD51 million) compared to operating loss of 29.2 billion yen in the same quarter last year.

Worldwide hardware unit sales

PS2: 1.51 million units (decrease of 1.15 mil)
PSP: 3.72 million units (an increase of 1.59 mil)
PS3: 1.56 million units (an increase of 0.86 mil)

Worldwide software unit sales

PS2: 19.3 million units (decrease of 11.8 mil)
PSP: 11.8 million unist (increase of 2.0 mil)
PS3: 22.8 million units (increase of 18.1 mil)

Inventory

Inventory, as of June 30, 2008, was USD1,505 million, which represents a 29.7% decrese from last year due to a decrease in PS3 hardware inventory.

Overall it looks like PS3 is doing astronomically better. Software sales for PS3 are up by almost 400%. Hardware sales for PS3 are up by more than 100%. PSP is doing extremely well too, with healthy growth quite far into its life. To conclude, Sony's Game Division looks like it's out of trouble for this generation.

I wish MS gave us more info instead of bundling it up with a bunch of other stuff under the "Entertainment and devices" division, I mean these are the most reliable figures you can get

Something doesn't add up, they say overall software sales decreased because of PS2 sales fall but then if you add up the table below it shows an approx 8m unit increase?
