Sony faces global PS2 shortage; US Xbox stock also low

Channel-draining exercise backfires for Sony as retailers run out of stock

Sales of console hardware are being severely impaired in all major global territories by severe ongoing shortages of the PlayStation 2, while some US retailers are also reporting low availability of the Xbox.

Major shortages of the PlayStation 2 console have been ongoing since the end of Summer in some areas, but have reached a head following the launch of the redesigned slimline "PStwo" - which massively increased demand for the system.

The situation is believed to be most severe in Europe, with the vast majority of retailers in the territory completely out of stock, although further shipments are hoped for by Christmas.

However, the USA is also experiencing severe shortages, and the unfulfilled demand in both territories is leading to significant price premiums being paid for new hardware on online auction sites such as eBay.

Although Microsoft is believed to be benefiting from Sony's difficulty in fulfilling demand for the PS2, the situation isn't entirely rosy for the rival firm either, with US retail sources indicating that Xbox stock is also in short supply.

"Consumer demand for the new PlayStation 2 has exceeded our expectations," admitted a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson in a statement yesterday, "and we are doing all we can to fulfill the wish lists of people who want a new PlayStation 2 unit under their trees this holiday season."

Much of the problem is believed to be down to Sony's policy throughout late summer and early autumn of bleeding the distribution channel dry of the original PlayStation 2 in order to clear it out for the arrival of the slimline model.

The company has failed to restock the channel with the new model, and a combination of demand for the slimline console and pent-up demand caused by the shortages throughout autumn saw the console selling out its first shipment in a matter of days at many retailers.

Earlier this week, a Sony representative in Japan announced that the firm was keeping production of the new PlayStation Portable handheld system low in order to focus more strongly on producing the PlayStation 2 console.

I saw loads of them at lunchtime today. I see they're going on ebay for upwards of 130 quid, so that would be at least 30 notes profit if I could be bothered.

More marketing hype.

:lol

Why does this bother some people so much. It's a fuck up by Sony, not some grand scheme to hype up sales.

The damn redesign would sell millions on it's own anyway and their only other "shortage" was at launch. It's not like a reoccuring theme.

I'd argue it is, and it's absolutely BRILLIANT. Instead of paying money for ads you get news sites to promote the NEW and SLIM console for you. Absolutely brilliant.

Why doesn't Sony just make more of the older style until they can meet demand with the newer, HDD impaired, version?

Could you provide some documentation of ANY other shortages? I'm not aware of any. Not for the Playstation, PSOne or the PS2 except for the initial launch and now.

I don't really know if I would call it a fuck up by Sony. Better to have a shortage than a surplus. At least with the shortage you can see demand and didn't end up making too many units.

I second that.

The hype seems to be working. Some idiot friend of a friend was talking crap with his buddy about how the PS2 is selling out everywhere, that no one can find one, and how you can sell them on ebay for profit. But anyway they assumed I wouldn't know much and thats when I walked them 5 steps to the EB in the same mall where they had a stack of new slim ps2 (10) and the older model (4). The manager was nice enough to let us know that they had an overstock on used ps2's too. I told if, if they're so sure about it, they should buy all their stock and make a profit.

Idiots....

They did however say they are running low on the xboxs. They have an abundance of used ps2 consoles because many traded their ps2 for an xbox. Go figure.

You can still find PS2s but depending on where you are, they can be in very short supply.

Stores I've visited here in Chicago...

3 Best Buys: None(the one nearest me hasn't had any for over half a month).

4 Targets: 2 stores have none and the one nearest me just got in 10.

2 Circuit Cities: None

1 Walmart: None

In most of these cases, these stores didn't sell out after Thanksgiving, they didn't have in stock then either.

Well, PS2s are going for a higher than retail price at Ebay, so that's a clear sign. If I was unemployed at the moment, with no better way to make money, I'd seriously consider buying a bunch of them (there's tons here in Canada) and start selling them on the Ebay. On a second thought, I'm not sure how difficult/pricey would it be to send them over the border to US.

Just charge up the wazoo for shipping if you're sending to the States, that's what I'd do if I had time to send PSTwos from Canada.

I will believe this if Sony sells more this year than last.

I still dont know why the PSTwo would bump demand. Mommy can I get a PSTwo for Christmas. Why? You already have a PS2.

If Sony did make a stupid mistake like this, it is sales that they most likly will never recoup. People will move on to the next item on the Christmas list or alternatives in most cases. That would mean better sales for XBOX and possibly even GCN if a XBOX was sold out as well. Look at last year when the GCN was supposedly in short supply. Nintendo never did recoup the lost sales.

Maybe the people wanting a PSTwo don't own a regular PS2. Judging from PS1 sales Sony still has alot of people to sell PS2s to... Like me, for instance. I don't see no real shortage around me. Some places are sold out, but others seem to have plenty. I'll pick one up when MGS3 comes out for sure (EU).

But there is no benefit of a PSTwo over a PS2. So how does this boost demand?
I don't think there are PS2s OR PSTwos available for purchase. The article mentions "bleeding the channel dry" of older models to make sure there is room for the new model, and how that strategy has backfired.

So for anyone who just wants to play PS2 games, they're SOL.

It saves space, it's sexy looking and it's got a built in network adapter.

The redesigned PSOne sold a boat load even though the PS1 was like 5 years old or whatever.

Got one picked up on tuesday from a local but busy HMV in london. Theres obviously shortages though, but hearing about constantly when you can go out 10 minites away and buy one is silly, I could sell the one i have and make £50 profit, which i'm debating doing. I get the feeling that alot of them sold on ebay are done so to people too lazy to go to more then a couple of stores.

By christmas i'm sure it'll be pretty much gone everywhere though, i'm unsure whether to sell it, or chip it. I'm vary wary on getting a PStwo chipped hearing how unreliable the drive is.

SORRY SON, WE'RE ALL OUT OF XBOX AND PS2 SYSTEMS.

REALLY? *SIGH* ALRIGHT, I GUESS I'LL TAKE THAT ONE...

:lol That's what the parents give to the kids when they've been bad.

It's the same at Amazon right now. The XBX sports bundle jumped to #1 when TRU was able to sell for a few days. Now it along with the PSTwo can only be found there for at least $175, usually $200.

Everyone else is basically sold out online for those.

Around here the shortages are on and off. The shipments come, but then sell out in a few days.

When I was searching around locally for the DS, I was also noticing that there wasn't a single PSTwo or Xbox in sight. Usually plenty of GCs in stock however.

So basically I the consumer all of a sudden saw something smaller yet plays all the same games and said now I need a PSTwo. As for sexy looking just looks like a smaller PS2. Then again all I care about is can the thing sit on the rack with the rest of my Audio/Visual equipment. Oh top loader that blows.

If I didn't already have a PS2, it being an easier-to-transport space-saving top-loader would be a decent selling point.

It's also the first holiday at $149, which traditionally brings in a whole new consumer.

Were they supposed to release a system that played different games? Have you ever heard of redesigns causing a spur in sales? iPod Mini, smaller sleeker DVD players, TV's, basically every other consumer electronics ever invented?

Yes exactly. Well said.

Scratch that. The Target that had the 10 PS2s yesterday, shelves were bare today. The Best Buy by me just got some more Xboxes in. They now have 120 in their mighty stack.

I swear you guys need to work out a little bit. My kids (7 and 9) have no problem packing up one of our XBOXes into a back pack and walking over to a friends.

As for the other devices sales jumping with redesigns, sure they did, but they added functionality as well (And were not in a sales decline). Not to mention top loading sucks. Not saying the PSTwo's wont sell, but I dont buy that the new design has anything to do with it (Beyond a small percentage). $149.99 price point has a good deal more to do about it. Shortages propably more to do with the pipeline being emptied before November and then trying to replenish. Last year and the year before they had Summer PS2's still in stores when the holiday shipments started to arrive. This year the summer stuff was sold in September and October.

By the way went to Target in Lockport IL last night, TRU in Downers Grove and GameStop in Downers Grove today. All 3 sold out of XBOX and PS2/PSTwo.

well, there's absolutely no shortage at all here in my neck of the woods... not even close. i am guessing this is purposely introduced marketing paranoia to get soccer mom's to buy the "hot sold out hard to find" item for their kids. it makes the moms feel like they got something special.

so did the PSTwo, they added the NA

I went to BB earlier today.

No more PSTwos
Plenty of regular Xboxes
No Xbox sports bundles (stupid MS)
Plenty of regular GCs
No GC Mario Kart bundles (stupid, stupid, stupid Nintendo - they are especially stupid after what happened last year)

Weird. All the Xboxes in my area are the holiday bundle. Most places I've seen have plenty of the Mario Kart bundles, and the Metroid Prime bundle, and regular GC's.

psst... hey buddy.. you need a network adapter? Oh you got a PSTwo... well it's built it now... THEY ADDED FUNCTIONALITY! Picture that?

Yeah, I see loads of them in the stores..

I actually believe the xbox is more popular in Sweden right now... though over 50% puts a chip in them..
