MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS

China-based subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment (TYO: 6758), Sony China, has acquired the remaining 51% controlling stake in its joint venture with China-based entertainment company Oriental Pearl. The two companies originally partnered in May'14 to support PlayStation hardware distribution in China. Following the transaction, the entity will be renamed Wanzhanpiwu Cultural Entertainment Development, granting Sony full ownership of PlayStation hardware distribution operations in the Chinese market.

This started as a joint venture with Oriental Pearl back in 2014: https://www.reuters.com/article/bus...o-set-up-china-playstation-jvs-idUSBREA4P014/

Isn't this weird? I've seen many reports, including direct reports and anecdotes from actual people making business in China that in order to do business there, they have to do it through a Chinese company, if they have all the control doesn't it means it's not chinese anymore?

Interesting to see this, it seems like Sony is planning to really push into the Chinese market.

And people wonder if the PS6 will be the last console from Sony. This story and many others are clear signs that Playstation is still in its growth phase.

Sony's push into South Korea, China, and other emerging markets is one of the smartest things that they've done in awhile.

Sony having a Sony China is probably what makes that possible. Doesn't Japan also have similar rules?

Why name the thread something like that instead of of something like "Sony gains full control of PlayStation hardware distribution in China"?

So China made specific PS console for China market, just like what Mercedes Benz is doing in China with Mercedez made in China for China market only. That is a good strategy to cut cost. And those made in Japan, and other parts in Asia and soon made in US , for USA market and other parts of the globe.

Yep! And Sony's push into India a few years ago will probably pay off in the 2030s. There's alot of potential growth all over the world that just hasn't been tapped yet in console gaming.

I feel like we don't have a great idea of what gaming in China is like. Just like everything in daily life there, so much propaganda distorting everything. What does it mean for a multinational like sony taking over 100% of their distribution in "communist" China? The PRC likely still takes a huge taxcut.

Thread title could be better.

The hero project of Sony is Asia is starting to bear fruit. South Korea success with Stellar blade, and upcoming Sony hero project in China like Lost Soul and Phantom blade zero which looks like will be a success, and Sony India and Middle East hero project are starting with there game development. This will be all be big for Sony and for all gaming community.

And Sony Africa too! I don't expect to to bear fruit until the 2040s. But if they keep pouring investments into these regions, it will bear fruit later on. Something many video game podcasters can't comprehend.

Wouldn't all this also in part be due to Japan, China and South-Korea strengthening economic ties to counter US tariffs?

Oh there is also Sony hero project in Africa? I'm only aware of China, Korea, India and Middle East. Africa is excellent with so many historical events, legends and mythology that can be mad into games.

(North) Africa is encompassed with Middle East, i.e. MENA region, and there's no Hero Project in Korea; Stellar Blade is a project from the external development studio in Japan.

I've seen the same thing. But i guess everyone has been lying to us. It turns out you can just start a business in China.

They (Sony) already have business there obviously, this is total control of hardware distribution.

Nah, it's true, they probably have some weird deal with the CCP, probably as some user said above, Sony China is considered a chinese company instead of a subsidiary, they probably are taking advantage of some legal loophole or whatever

Sony has already seen several games come out or be released this year from their "Playstation China Hero Project" including AI Limit and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

China is the world's fastest PC gaming market too, there's a lot of untapped potential there

Maybe, but chances are that it is also overblown. This is not Soviet Union times Russia here, VAT or collecting taxes from the local business revenue seems so strange because we got a bit too accustomed to those sweet sweet double Irish Dutch sandwiches and the like I think ;).

Soon most games will be censored to China standards like they're censored to American standards now.
Americans took nudity and sex out of games. The Chinese will extend that further while taking drugs and other aspects away.
With gaming as a whole contracting it's tragic that we never got any regional genres (like with film) outside of the distinct Japanese and American games we had.
