Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

Really enjoyed the event, even though my time was cut slightly short.

Strange experience (different yet familiar), but great in its own right. Gamescom is a huge show.

The Sony conference was pretty good. Some great content, but terrible delivery. I felt bad at times for some of the folks. I've said this before, but SCE really need to talk less. There is such a thing as too much. I heard too many names being mentioned. There should be a very brief introduction (I'm talking seconds), then the trailer should do the rest with displaying the game and the team behind it. At points, it just felt like they dragged on and on. This conference could be cut short by about 15 minutes, delivered slightly differently, with the same content, and be far greater.

I was very pleased with the games on display though.

SCE revealed another 4 or so of their 20 first year exclusives, and of them, three particularly impressed.

Rime looks lovely. I absolutely adore the aesthetic. It reminds me of a certain other game that came out all those years ago.

Shadow of the Beast I knew about already, but it was still cool to see. Only thing I don't understand is the reason behind using a CGI trailer considering the game, but I'll go with it. It's cool at least. And it's one blast from the past out of the way.

Last game to really impress was Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. I think it's a brilliant move to have TCR developing an exclusive for Sony. They're going to create something special potentially. This, and Rime, in particular the two games I'll be keeping a close eye on. I feel, much like Journey, they're the kind of games that could really take people by surprise and make a strong impact.

The other stuff shown was also pretty decent with stuff like Resogun, Murasaki Baby and Helldivers all looking like titles with real potential.

The Order looks impressive. Killzone looks good. Infamous looks absolutely amazing. I feel it's a huge disservice to have not given this game a demonstration on stage. This was pretty much the last opportunity for that, and I feel a little disappointed it was not done.

The ISP deal for Europe could be quite good here in the UK especially depending on how it's positioned.

Also, Sony Pictures clearly are very bored. Probably the most unexpected thing at the conference. Of all the things you could be focusing your time on, you're going to create a Watch Dogs movie.

Hi Verendus!
Any idea how the presser on 9/9 and TGS are shaping up? Apparently both will focus on PS4 in Japan.

Why no Megatons, Verendus?

Hi Verendus!

For SCE games:

Gamescom > TGS/SCE Event = E3

That should give you a good idea of what to expect. I don't know much about what they're doing with that in terms of presentation, games etc. right now. Reading through this thread though, a lot of folks were disappointed with the SCE showing at Gamescom (which I thought was pretty good) so I don't see them being impressed next month.

There are no megatons left.

So the Japanese side is more focused on third party stuff then? I'm guessing no TLG re-reveal just yet then.

I would suspect TLG will be saved for an E3 or something for a re-reveal. It's that kind of game to thump your chest about. I think it would be a pretty bad move to show something like that at TGS.

It's a semi-joke.

We clearly have different expectations for what constitutes a megaton. And to be frank, new IPs don't count in my opinion, so what is left really outside of the obvious?
Are games from ND, SSM expected to be revealed this year or in 2014?

If those new IPs come from established developers it certainly counts but I assume those developers are being saved for VGA/E3.

I guess it's never too early to start getting hyped for E3, right guys? guys?

I see.
And what about the SCEJ(?) RPGs you hinted at a while back, any chance of those being introduced at TGS? I think if Sony could get one of those at early in the PS4 life it'd be a good way of establishing it as a brand.

Verendus I liked the show as well. And those 3 games are on my top 3 list as well.

I agree about Infamous. Can't believe they gave time to ANOTHER AC demo instead!!! For the love of God we get it, it's AC. We get one EVERY year. But I guess they have to because of Ubisoft.

They had to show the public that their game wasn't broken like it seemed in E3.

I felt bad for the devs when that happened. :(

I'm just honestly stunned people are disappointed. That dumbfounds me. They had several announcements at E3, and even more today. And they still have the big guns from ND, SM and others looming. And some Japanese stuff coming out of TGS (though I don't expect a whole lot out of that show). They're just stacked with games of all kinds.

What else do people want?

I just think people get scared by all this indie talk afraid that Sony doesn't have that many great AAA games. I'm not talking you and me, i'm thinking of the regular gamer that sometimes goes to IGN and Gamespot.

I don't get the saving stuff part. It's like "we already won" which is not the case. Right now the average joe gamer is hyping up the PS4 because of potential alone, not because of actual games shown.

Wouldn't hurt Sony to do like Microsoft in this case and put a teaser or two for games like Uncharted, God of War and GT on PS4.

I really don't see how this would hurt them as much as people are thinking. Not showing just makes some of the gamers a little apprehensive.

Well, i guess it's just opinions, but i don't really like this poker attitude of not showing our hand because we don't have to because it sounds like cockyness, something that hurt them badly in recent past.

PS: still hyped as fuck for PS4 and the future.

One of those was in early discussions for E3 so I'm sure you'll see it by the end of the year. The other one, I don't know.

Fair point. I guess if it's a ND game, it would be a megaton for a lot if people. I know it is for me simply because it's them. I couldn't say the same for GG though unless their new IP really looks amazing.

I see.

No chance. Those two in particular were never planned for TGS.

What about that huge western 3rd party exclusive?
Definitely not seeing that this year. Earliest would be next year.

On the SCE exclusive discussion, I think people should give them the little benefit of the doubt. They've already revealed 10 of them, with 5 being retail releases and 3 being launch games. I know people don't like to include digital games but if there is another Journey quality game amongst them, I don't feel there will be complaints at that stage. You need people like TCR for that reason. It's easy to want AAA games but to get them to the quality expected takes a lot of time. Digital titles are important because they're smaller, more focused and more experimental too at times.

There is a reason why SCE feels they don't need to show their hand and that's because of being cheaper than the competition and also having much stronger interest at this stage. They can say we have games in development and people will believe, because with the expansion of SCE WWS over the last generation, the consistency has been seen. Plus, it's nice to let MS show what they have so they can plan their own bombastic response. With MS, it's the complete opposite and they have nothing else going for them so they need to show their entire hand to generate some excitement.

There will be another 3-4 SCE retail releases for next year announced eventually. And if people genuinely think having 8-9 retail exclusives all from SCE WWS in the first year is too little, then I don't know what to say to that. I think I can appreciate people feeling disappointed that more AAA exclusives aren't revealed, but then I didn't expect people to discount digital exclusives either. Even on the MS side, stuff like D4 or Below is far more interesting to me than Ryse or Dead Rising. Obviously Halo is awesome but you'll get your Uncharted so it's not like it matters at the end of the day.

As it stands, I feel SCE has shown a lot of content and it's good they're being smart about their reveals because this is pretty much the only time they can hold back due to launch excitement being more important for the average gamer than what is coming at the end of 2014.

Is Rime and game from TCR digital release? I mean has this been confirmed? Both are supposed to be open world games. TCR game will even have exploration.

I mean it doesn't matter to me, I am excited either way. Just wondering if this is confirmed.

I imagine they are. If they get a retail release, the price should be slightly cheaper than full. Like a Sly situation.

Much like everyone, I tuned into the conference to see some big AAA titles, that would blow me away graphics & playability wise, to justify my pre-order.

We didn't get it, what I did come away with was hype for the diversity of games that are coming, and this is what I want. Having been slowly turned off the endless churn of COD and FPS's I had already started playing a wider genre of games on the PS3, dipping into PSN network titles that go back to the roots of what sucked me into gaming.

Is it really such a bad thing if Sony helps & supports Indie Developers to elevate to the next level? After so many success stories?

Yes ok I still want the AAA titles, yes I will still buy COD and BF4 but knowing what Sony has shown outside of those has elevated my hype level.

My only disappointment is the launch date 29th of November in the UK, I wanted it sooner, no craved it sooner. But realise the later it is the more polished the games could be, unlike releasing a Forza that needs a day one update to "finish" the game off

Sony have impressed me, and I dig the secrecy on "whats to come"

Please don't ever let Jim Ryan present something like this again. Sony have a lot of far better mouthpieces to put on stage. Jim is not one of them. It was uncomfortable watching him as him waved his hands about and fluffed up at times.

Agree lacked fluidity and what seemed to be confidence

Sony's Gamescom press conference was an inspired piece of marketing and another sign that the once out-of-touch company is back on track.

The opening of Sony's Gamescom press conference this year was a revelation--and not because it was filled with any earth-shattering announcements, or CEO-related mishaps. Rather, it showed Sony--a company that for the longest time seemed to have completely lost the plot--finally getting its act together, and understanding its audience.

Shuhei Yoshida didn't say a word as he quietly walked onstage to open the show. There was no grand fanfare as he sat down in a comfy leather chair and began casually flicking through the slick-looking menus of the PlayStation 4. And there was no wall of marketing fluff between him and the audience as he jumped into a Killzone match, failed to shoot at anything in particular, and tweeted a picture of one of its trees.

You could easily imagine yourself in Yoshida's place, sitting back in that comfy leather chair and generally larking about on a PlayStation. Here was a company so assured in its messaging, and so completely convinced by its creation, that it had the confidence to sit back, shut up, and let the product do the talking. Sony simply showed the world how great the PS4 is without surrounding it with a cloud of fluffy marketing speak and outlandish promises. It was relaxed, it was self-assured, and, above all, it was genuine.

It was a piece of presentation brilliance that Sony's competitors would do well to take to heart. When Peter Moore takes to the stage for EA and starts spouting hyperbole about the latest FIFA, do you really believe that he has ever played a game in his life? Or when Microsoft's Phil Spencer announces that FIFA 14 is being bundled in with preorders of the Xbox One, do you really think that it's some grand gift to gamers, rather than just a desperate attempt to claw back customers after a string of disastrous decisions?

Sony is not perfect, and it certainly fell in the trap of wheeling out an endless string of suits to promote its wares later in its presentation. But by grabbing our attention so firmly at the start--even if it was ultimately just some slick marketing--you feel that it cares, that there's a grand vision at work underneath it all that's finally coming to fruition.

You could see that vision when Sony announced that the PS4 was designed to make it as easy as possible for developers to create great games. You could see it when Sony told a packed E3 crowd that you could share and sell disc-based games, and play them without an Internet connection. And you could see it when it spent as much time talking about indie games at this year's Gamescom as it did the likes of Killzone: Shadow Fall and Assassin's Creed IV.

This is a company that has an innate understanding of what its customers want, and one that's not afraid to be bold when it needs to be. It's hard to imagine Microsoft showcasing something as off-the-wall as Octodad alongside the likes of Killzone, and yet Sony does so, and it never feels like an insincere token gesture towards the indie crowd. Our Sony Gamescom appointments this year weren't filled with shooters and racers, but rather the likes of Knack, Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls.

Ultimately, what we want are great games. Some of us will want our games to have big explosions. Others will want to race the fastest cars. Other people will want games that are artistic, wacky, thought-provoking, or just plain fun. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the PS3, the PS4, and yes, even the Vita, are the best places to get that kind of variety now and in the future, at least if you don't own a gaming PC.

Microsoft might have the mighty Titanfall, but it doesn't have the confidence, the charm, or the passion for games that will see it play a majority role in the next console generation. Sony has got its act together; it's telling the world it knows and loves games. And that is exactly what's going to secure its place as the console of choice.
