Sony may have just bought Housemarque

What? You mean all of those Xbox ports that the world was waiting for aren't happening now? This is an outrage.

Well, I remenber that Sony is gonna buy Blue Point in february, and that was fake. So this is the same. Jimbo doing is work, ( sinking the brand)

Probably mean that their next game is with Sony too, i doubt anyone really knows if they will buy them or not outside the top management

Acquisitions like that are weird because they are already exclusive since forever.

This one wouldn't surprise me though. Seems fitting just like insomniac

That's not true at all, they've made computer games since forever, Playstation is a new thing for these guys.

Well for the last 14 years they've been heavily associated with PlayStation and pretty much exclusive to them for the last 8 of those. Not really a new situation for them.

They've released games on PC too, not all their games though, I get the thinking but I don't think it's fair to say they're already exclusive, for PC gamers it would be a loss if they went full exclusive.

Damn you Jim Ryan, why did you buy a studio that was focusing on PlayStation anyway?

You should have gone out of your way to buy someone who does multiplatform games, just to screw Xbox fans over!

I don't care about getting more games! I want to take games away from others!

You dumbass!

good for them?

the only good game they've put out is Resogun. i remember that was one of the first games i played on my PS4 and i played it a lot while waiting for some actual good exclusives to come to PS4.

Well it's more just fortifying. Although they have been making exclusives for Sony for a while there's nothing stopping another publisher offering a juicy deal or housemarque looking elsewhere.

Like insomniac did with fuse (lol) and sunset overdrive. I guess it offers peace of mind and more stability.

Maybe sony get more money per unit sold but I, am not sure of that

Never thought I'd see people throwing shade on a great little studio like Housemarque on a gaming forum, enjoy your generic shit-a-thons with bonus monthly skins then. Currently loving Returnal which is unsurprising given how much time I spent in Alienation, Dead Nation, Resogun and Nex Machina. Their games just feel so good and they give a shit about gaming culture and history. You people don't deserve Housemarque.

Nobody is waiting for them. 🤣

Even Sony fans didn't buy them.

Hopefully they didn't pay much. Their best game was from 2008 (Golf: Tee It Up on Xbox Live).

Hopefully not, they are not that good.

Not a very exciting acquisition, but I guess it is a good fit for Sony studios... A low budget, small team, working with more experimental projects.

Why not? Just like with Insomniac it was about time they put a ring on it before Tencent or MS nabs 'em.
Celebrate the occasion with a Super Stardust port to PC!

About time.

Based on the recent presentation it's met and even exceeded expectations.

It's a great game to boot.

I could see that to an extent but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a PC gamer that would care that much. Over the last 25 years they've developed 20 games to their name. Out of those only 6 were found on PC and 4 of those were back in the 90's. Outside of those you had Outland in 2011 and Nex Machina in 2017. Housemarque stopped being any real presence in the PC space over 20 years ago. Not to mention, Sony is clearly moving towards a PC inclusive release of their games. Eventually PC gamers would most likely get them as well.

As much as I'm against charging 80€ for Returnal I really hope that Housemarque survives and they get another shot at a (proper) triple-A game.

I wouldn't be surprised, wonder if they will bought other studios with whom they have had a long history.
I think it's only a matter of time. I seriously doubt Sony will suddenly announce a slew of acquisitions like Microsoft has but I would bank on them picking up a handful of smaller teams over the next 5 or 6 years. Until then they'll focus on growing their current studios like they have been and signing third parties to make games for them. I fully expect Sony to end the generation with at least 4 more studios than they currently have. The only reason I see them making a Zenimax sized purchase is if a valuable publisher is looking to sell and they want to make sure they snag them. But studios like Housemarque where they have a long history, make great games, and wouldn't be that expensive to pick up are probably what Sony is actively looking to buy.

Yeah, Bluepoint it's the first studio that comes to mind. They have the tech and the expertise, an original IP from them could be something very cool.
They have the tech and expertise to take other people's masterpieces in game design and add a level of visual polish and performance. They are completely unproven in terms of game design, level design and new IP creation.

They care about keeping talent and knowing there are going to be showcase quality steady stream of titles coming from them. If they work well with the other SIE WWS Studios now, as a first party they can take it to the next level and help the whole WWS Studios improve.

An important part about a studio like Housemarque is that while they easily fit at Sony they also make games that are unlike anything Sony's current studios do. As you said, being in their roster with all those resources at their disposal and the huge financial backing means they'd get to grow where they need it. That could very well elevate them beyond what they've done so far. Similar to how that allowed Guerrilla to go from making mediocre games to being one of Sony's most recognized studios and one of the best in the business for pushing visuals.

Fret not, 'cause those will probably be the same people who salivate over FF16 coming to Game Pass... in 2025!

Point is, they flip flop on what's important on daily basis, so in this instance, Returnal was supposed to be Recore 2.0 both critically and commercially, and yet bar Forza games, I believe it reviewed better than any original Xbox's so-called AAA games since 2015, so now to them only unit sales matter to determine the game's quality.

But that's not all! When the big hits like God of War and Horizon come out and become commercially successful, those will likely be the same people who cry about 'walking simulator, third-person movie, etc' to denigrate Sony's offerings.

I won't lie, these childish and sometimes pathetic behaviors are also prominent within the other consoles fanbase, but the difference is, they really don't come across as THAT desperate when they act like this.

Well Sony certainly arent going to blow billions on a big publisher, and incur the massive associated costs, it just isn't cost effective.
Exactly. This is such an underrated point that people who are always championing for more acquisitions don't even bother to consider.

To add to this, this associated cost is recurring year over year. Unless the entity you bring in is self-sustainable and profitable on its own, it will eat up your operating profits every year.

It's possible that Sony bought Housemarque but it's also possible that the nuance of what he's saying is lost in the Portuguese to English translation.

The last great and original game was Elfmania on the Amiga. After that their highlights consists of Super Stardust Remakes (still love Super Stardust on the Amiga). The rest is mediocre (even though I liked Dead Nation and Outland).

But he is right, the corporation with Sony is not a new thing for them - they are creating PS(N) games for at least 15 years.
