Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

For me, Spider-Man, The Last Guardian, Horizon and Gravity Rush 2 are all so very promising. God of War too, it seems to take the series into an interesting and much needed new direction.

I'm sure TLoU2 will be good, buit I would have prefered a new IP. Sci-fi preferably. As for Sucker Punch, a new IP would be cool as Infamous doesn't do it for me.

Partner-wise, really looking forward to see the gameplay reveal of Matterfall and WILD is a really cool concept I'd love to see more of. Hoping for a new FROM exclusive as well.

Sony is doing well.

I mean, I don't think these two projects combined would require much more than 50 employees from Japan Studio. Since the studio has around 400, there must be some projects that have been in full production for some time already.

edit: Of course Japan Studio does ex-dev as well, but that wouldn't take the majority of the personnel, I'd think.

What.

So this E3, we got:

Internal
Sony Bend - Days Gone
Sony Santa Monica - God of War

External
Kojima Productions - Death Stranding
Impulse Gear - Farpoint
Insomniac Games - Spider-Man
Tangentlemen - Here They Lie

That's a pretty great list of announcements IMO and we've still got Gamescom, TGS and PSX to come this year.

Isn't really a big deal to me either way, lol. I have zero interest in TLOU2 so UC4 was basically a swan song from ND until like...2023 or something, lmao.

As far as last gen, regardless of what they said about "time to triangle", it's obvious they're not going to be able to churn out games with the same regularity they did last gen, unless they went and built two teams without telling anyone, which would be neat.

It's not that odd to me. For one thing, games are clearly taking longer and longer to complete. And even with an engine ready, they've still got to develop a brand new IP (apparently). And once that's done, it needs to be a larger, meatier game than Second Son because that was everyone's biggest complaint about that title.

This could mean a few things:

1.) There are some studios we've forgotten.

2.) There are some studios we don't know about, lol.

3.) Some studios have multiple teams and they're developing multiple games simultaneously.

Either's fine, 'cause honestly I was wondering wtf happens once 2018 hits.

Definitely 1 and 3.

At a minimum. We don't know what Sucker Punch are working on, ditto North West studio. Naughty Dog have two teams and there's probably more happening in Japan Studio.

Yeah, I keep forgetting about PGW and PSX still. We have a lot of stuff still to come. But doesn't usually have the big first party announcements.

I wonder if we'll see SuckerPunch announce this year...

i think Impulse Gear is a Sony studio.

Wasn't sure where else to post this but I have seriously never been more impressed with a Sony line-up of upcoming games. Just the AAA ones:

- God of War
- Days Gone
- Spider-Man
- Horizon
- Detroit
- Dreams
- The Last Guardian
- Gran Turismo Sport
- Gravity Rush 2

I am legitimately interested in every one of these with GTS as the lone exception. It's just so diverse and loaded with new IP as well. Uncharted, Ratchet, and MLB got the ball rolling earlier this year in terms of PS4 exclusives and now the next couple of years look ridiculously stacked. What's crazier is the fact that Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch, two of their premier studios, also have unannounced games brewing. Not to sound like a complete fanboy but I feel incredibly excited to be a PlayStation gamer right now.

I want to play all those games listed, cannot fucking wait! That's the problem for me though, it's just the games I'm looking forward to period, 3rd parties are getting shitter for me with every passing year. :(

Can't believe FFXV seems like a fuck up, hope it all just comes together but don't see it

I Googled their name and the first result is their website where the line on Google says

Seems they are not a Sony studio unless they just haven't updated their page

It's weird because Shawn Layden has referred to them twice as internal... I wonder if they're an incubation style thing, in the San Mateo offices? Confused...

There is not enough chatter around Here They Lie, the games looks and sounds awesome. It will support PSVR as well as PS4 and it will launch in 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-bcha7Q4pk

It's gonna be on PS4 vanilla? I'd play it without VR if possible.

From what Im reading, yes. Sounds like its the same as RE7, you can play the whole thing either with or withouth a headset.

Here is a quote from Gamespot

It's a PS4 exclusive and it's compatible with PlayStation VR. It's the first game from The Tangentlemen, a studio formed from ex-Call of Duty and Tomb Raider developers.

And another one from Santa Monica, website

Explore a nightmarish city inhabited by strange, malevolent creatures in this ground-breaking first-person horror game compatible with PlayStation VR.

To me that sounds like you can play on PS4 vanilla

So now we know what every Sony studios are working on

Actually, we do not.

Guerrilla Games
Has a second team (smaller than the current Horizon team). My guess is they are working on a new IP, or they are helping Guerrilla Cambridge with the new Killzone game.

Guerrilla Cambridge
See post above.

Sucker Punch
New unknown IP

PixelOpus
New IP (my guess is it's Gnomageddon)

North West Studio
New VR game / IP

SCEE Connected ContentGroup
Hardware Rivals is finished. So they have to be working on a new game already.

Naughty Dog
The are working on the singleplayer DLC for Uncharted 4 and on a new game of course

Media Molecule
Their second team (see Tearaway) seems to be working on a new IP.

Sony San Diego
They are getting bigger and bigger lately. So besides MLB, they should be working on new stuff, too. Even if they are 'only' co-developing / co-producing it (see Kill Strain).

The biggest mystery is Sony Japan Studio.
People seem to forget that Gravity Rush 2 is the only known game that is 100% internally developed. The Last Guardian is a co-production with genDESIGN (Famito Udea's studio) like Hot Shots Golf. genDESIGN's main focus for The Last Guardian is on aesthetics, while also being responsible for level design direction, animation direction, art direction character design, concept art, narrative and storyboarding and research and development. SCE Japan Studio handles the technical side and implements the aesthetics. As we all know, Japan Studio has over 400 employees. Not all of them are developers, of course. But still..... there clearly has to be more stuff, besides Knack 2.

And then we have all the unknown "Second Party" games (Second Party like: Spider-Man, Farpoint, Here They Lie, Drawn to Death, What Remains of Edith Finch, WiLD, Matterfall, etc.) that are still top secret.

It's crazy how much 1st/2nd Party stuff they have :) Keep them coming, Sony.

There were two new trademarks that popped up before e3. I wonder which studios are associated with those. It was in the pre-e3 Sony thread.

"The Sentinel" is a trademark that hasn't shown up yet. My guess is it's a VR game, probably announced at whatever Euro Show they go to this year.

These new trademarks were Death Stranding (Kojima's new game) and Farpoint.

"The Sentinel" and "Gnomageddon" are still a mystery a.k.a top secret.

I'm hopeful that San Diego had something new in the works aside from Killstrain and MLB. Last time they had a notable hand in another project we got Mod Nation Racers.

I really hope SP's new game is a new Sly Cooper game with high budget only for PS4 and no Vita version to bring it down.

need more non realistic games in my life.

Kill Strain is internal, Drawn to Death and Guns Up! are their recent co-development external projects
It is. Accidentally mixed it up with Guns Up. Kill Strain and Drawn to Death are nearly finished and Guns Up already launched. So yeah, they're working on new stuff, for sure ;)

It's a new AAA IP.

Yeah. I really hope they have some cool new projects in deck. I played some Kill Strain and a lot of Drawn To Death and they are cool, specially DtD. Guns Up! I also had in beta some time before launch last year at PSX but never actually played it

My dream thing for them would be come back to somekind of bigger projects like a Mark Of Kri reboot

So true. I hope they get a second 'big' team, next to the MLB team. As I've already said, they hired a lot in the last couple of months. And yes.... a new 'The Mark of Kri' would be amazing. Colourful, great art design and brutal. Do it, San Diego :)

A lot of this seems off to me. SCEE Connected Content Group isn't a real game development team. They really work on network technology and kind of got to develop Hardware Rivals as a bonus. They even borrow staff from their parent London Studio.

Cambridge is making RIGS. No way they are making a Killzone now.

Then you have San Mateo Studio, Foster City Studio, San Diego Studio, and Santa Monica Studio that work on a dozen of external games.

Well, there are certain things we do know (based on job posting)...

Guerilla Games (Amsterdam):
All seem to point out that most of the studio (if not all of them) are working on Horizon Zero Dawn. Although, it is possible a very small (like you said) may be prototyping their next project (could be another new IP, but it it will most likely be a Horizon sequel, if it does well).

Guerilla Cambridge:
Not only they are working on RIGS, which is supposed to be a launch title, it seem likely that they will be working on a multi-million dollar franchise. Could be Killzone... or Resistance (since the trademark was renewed by SIEE in the past year and a half). One or the other is a win-win situation for me. (UPDATE: Two new job posting: One for Audio Programmers, which one of the responsibilities being "Model 1st and 3rd-person weapon fire and reload triggering..." The other for Game Systems Programmers asking to "have a particular passion for developing frontend menu and in-game HUD systems within an online environment".) It's clearly a shooter game. Whether it is a FPS or a TPS remains to be seen.

Sucker Punch:
We all have been teased by SP, Shinobi and Verendus regarding their next project. That it won't be inFamous-related, most likely a new IP (could also be a reboot of something). That they will step up their game visually compared to Second Son (which to me implies something photorealistic). Although, the only we can be more-or-less sure about is that the game will likely be a Third Person action/adventure game.

PixelOpus
A very young and small studio (Indie style). Whatever they could be working on, it will most likely be one-off projects that are set to be digital-only titles.

North West studio
Sony created that studio specifically for the PS VR. Based on a job posting, they are looking for artists with stylised folios similar to Ghibli style. Will it be an adventure, an RPG, I don't know. Since the studio is very young, we should not expect it to grow to a 100 people type of projects, especially considering that VR will be their main focus. I don't see big AAA full-games being work on exclusively for PSVR.

Naughty Dog:
Their last game (UC4) came out last month. So... most of them should be back to work pretty soon. Obviously, their next project is the UC4 single-player story DLC they said they would be working on. Although, if it is anything like the one they made for TLOU, half of the team will be assigned to it. As for the rest, they will most likely join the others and continue to prototype different ideas for their next big game. It could be a sequel to TLOU (with new chars or not) or a new IP (possibly Sci-Fi as they teased it a little bit).

Media Molecule:
Well they are working on Dreams, but how many are working on it. No idea. Although, since they are a small team, I expect that a part of them may be prototyping other stuff. Maybe playing with some old IPs... or a new one (unlikely).

These new trademarks were Death Stranding (Kojima's new game) and Farpoint.

"The Sentinel" and "Gnomageddon" are still a mystery a.k.a top secret.

Sound like a title Sucker Punch could use for their next game/IP, if it's anything like their previous games (open-world, third-person action adventure). Also, based on rumors (I think they were from both Shinobi and Verendus), it should be a step up visually compared to InFamous Second Son.

I don't have much time to play, but the games that i will play from now on will mostly consist of Sony exclusives because i am interested in most of them and they have a lot of games coming up, i only wish for more platformers... hopefully the NX delivers on the (3D) platforming front... fat chance i know.

I knew sucker punch wouldn't be at e3. It's still too soon if it's an ambitious new IP. If its big and impressive, Sony will sit on it until e3 2017 most likely.

I thought Guerrilla Cambridge was finishing RIGS?

RIGS isn't their only game, from what I'm hearing.

A lot of this seems off to me. SCEE Connected Content Group isn't a real game development team. They really work on network technology and kind of got to develop Hardware Rivals as a bonus. They even borrow staff from their parent London Studio.

RIGS isn't the only Cambridge game, from what I'm hearing. SCEE Connected Content Group can make small games. Again, from what I'm hearing.

Yeah, I doubt that Cambridge is only making RIGS, and I wouldnt be surprised if their next game is a Killzone game fully compatible with PSVR. Not VR only but with the full game support like RE7

Have decided I should try and complete all of the Sony games. I already went through The Last of Us on PS3, so I'm starting off with The Order: 1886 and it is getting better the further in you get. It's not really boring me, but I think I am close to the end? Just arrived at the hospital.

I got Gravity Rush HD Remastered, God of War III Remastered and Heavy Rain / Beyond HD Remastered on the way as well.

Also excited about The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo Sport, God of War, Detroit: Become Human and Spider-Man.

Next year will be a very intesresting E3 because the majority of first party titles have shown their hand.

What hasn't been shown is what long term 2nd party titles are to be seen. Sony has had some pretty interesting 2nd Party relations earlier in the generation. Bloodborne, the Order: 1886, Until Dawn, Ratchet and Clank - etc.

I'd like to see them continue that onus going forward. Next year we could have just as many exclusives on stage - pending on if Sony executes with the trend of making strong 2nd party content exclusive to their platform. At this point- Remedy, Crytek, and Ready at Dawn, could serve as candidates for strong 2nd party software.

I can imagine next year's E3 with a whole box of new AAA games pending Sony actually put it's cross hairs out and gets bullish. The install base will be massive by next year's E3 - leaving the investment in a second party title all the smarter.

My predicted schedule:

October 2016: TLG
February 2017: Horizon
Summer 2017: Dreams
Fall 2017: Spider-Man
March 2018: God of War

I asked this at the E3 thread but got no answer. Anyone know if Verendus is banned? That mas said since 2012 or 2013 that Studio Japan is working on a big AAA jRPG. 3-4 years later, no reveal so far. That means if it shows up at the next E3, that's 5-6 years working on it presuming it comes the year after that. At this point we keep believing it's real or BS?

I don't want to have to pull this out.

no he is not banned - regarding the JRPG he said this at the end of 2014 (Sony JRPG still exists. Last I knew, they were pushing past pre-production. We're also pushing forward with approaching more people to get further projects off the ground)

In 2015 he also mentioned the the 3 most exciting internal Sony Games in his eyes and the Sony Japan RPG was also mentioned.

i think this year is/was actually the first year where we got a realistic Chance for this Game to be announced. But since its a big project and we know Sony lets it studios take their time, i think a 2017 reveal is more realistic --> especially after The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 are out
