Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

What happen to London studio and GG Cambridge after PSVR launch? Work on normal title or become VR studio?

That probably depends heavily on how well PSVR does. If it does well or even OK they'll probably continue on with VR. If it bombs I suppose it's back to the drawing board.

Seems like Impulse Gear is only going to be focused on making VR games. They have Seth Luisi there who presided over some of the SOCOM games with zipper interactive. Can't see any of those other studios making a socom.

SOCOM VR it is i guess

Can someone help me build a list of PS4 games in 2017?

First party games? So far it's just:
Everybody's Golf 7
Gran Turismo Sport
Gravity Rush 2
Horizon: Zero Dawn

Sony have finally stopped announcing most release dates way too early, so who knows what else will make it out next year.

London studio will probably work on more VR games and experiences(if it does well) and GG Cambridge will probably keep working with rigs and maybe do something with killzone.

i think that Asobi Team perhaps just oversee the Playroom games - Firesprite do a lot of the work on them.

Everything I've read, including Firesprite's own website, says Firesprite's main contribution was the art style. Some of the mini-games seem to have been outsourced (like the Double Fine one) but I'm not sure Firesprite did them.

My guess is that Cambridge is already making a new Killzone for a while

This RIGS gone gold pic seems to have only half of the people working on the studio (is supposed to be 70-80 people)

Whether for missing release dates or original planning, I want consistent releases for my PS4 all year, not just the holiday season, and Sony has been delivering all year. This year, with GTS and Horizon delayed, some comments have been stated that Sony is absent from the end of the year again.

How?

We have amazing games released earlier in the year (UC4, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, Ratchet) we have smaller games released a few months back (Bound, Tomorrow Children) we have exclusive quality third party games (Disgaea 5, Dragon Quest Builders) and we have a new way to play video games with how many only on PlayStation experiences? (Rigs, Rez, Until Dawn, Batman, Thumper, etc...)

I just don't buy it, PS4's game variety is off the charts to me, I can't keep up with releases since mid 2015. And with FF15 & The last Guardian still planned to close out the year, along with the usual heavy hitters, I'm so glad GT or Horizon gets there own months to themselves, it would have been overwhelming with VR and SE showing us so much love.

So please Sony, you just need one AAA for the Holiday, please continue to spread out world wide studio games. And release thing in spring and summer!

MLB will also be released in March.

Then they have God of War, Spiderman, Detroit and Days Gone announced but without a firm date (although they'll all be out between 2017 and 2018).

I spoke on this in another thread earlier. If Sony didn't have the delays, there probably wouldn't be much of an issue (I think that "only the fall counts" mentality would still be seen but maybe not as much). MS doesn't get as much flak for their fall centered lineup because they announce titles for that period and hit those dates. Sony just needs to commit to spring/summer releases instead of attempting to hit fall and just end up announcing delays. It is the delay that ruins perception for Sony.

I mean ppl are so full of fluff I don't even pay attention to the no games crap.
2017:
Gravity rush 2(dated)
MLB 2017(comes out around the same time so might as well be dated)
Hot shot golf(summer)
Gt sport(I'm expecting a full year delay but who knows)
farpoint(vr 2017)
Vrpg(2017,VR)

That's just big stuff and what we know btw

Edit:idk how but i forgot horizon lmao

MLB should be a go too.

PlayStatiom Pro Version? 😍

And they supported PlayStation Move the first year it was out no? Only for Homerun Derby.

But I would expect them to support in a variety of ways. Don't know about hitting the ball though...they might be worried about players breaking stuff around the house or breaking themselves.

After only one year in full production? I seriously doubt it. I don't think we'll see Japan Studio's next two big games until 2018.

well since the rumour is coming from Verendus, thats what Verendus said at the end of 2014

Sony JRPG still exists. Last I knew, they were pushing past pre-production.

or did i miss any new infos regarding the full production?

You guys pretty much nailed it.

But I think the average consumer don't care about this BS. The only perception I see is xbox fanatics deluding themselves. Xbox Slim is pretty much stabilized as much as it's awesome fall lineup won't put the world in fire. PS4 will be pretty much their choice this Fall again just like 2015.

And for us who are more informed we know that the next 5, 6 months will be amazingly strong with games. We will have the best transition from one year to another since crap...I don't even remember when we had this much exclusive software coming in Jan/Feb.

Didn't Verendus also say it'd be announced in 2015? No disrespect to Verendus, he clearly has some inside knowledge, but he talks about games way, way too early. That's why he doesn't leak stuff anymore, the mods told him to stop.

yeah he does that, but i guess since he is working at Sony he can only talk about games/projects that are still far away to not ruin the announcement.

He mentioned the FF7 Remake in 2013, by 2015 when it got announced hardly anyone connected that with Verendus.
or the exclusive Warner Bros Game that turned out to be Blackman VR (also mentioned by him in 2013)

That's why he doesn't leak stuff anymore, the mods told him to stop.

did they? iirc he told us last year that he will stop leaking things, because there is already enough that will keep us busy the next years (His big list in 2015)

That is true as well. Sometimes it helps to just take a step back and consider this is mostly online nonsense more than anything else. It really doesn't matter when these games land during the year. Sony getting a better release window going would be nice but it isn't that big of a deal.

"The ___ has no games" mantra has been repeated ever since the PS2 days, despite of the 2001 fall line-up. I think it was originally started by bitter DC fans, and it keeps on coming every generation whether the system has a variety of games available or not. This gen the goalposts were moved to exclude indies and multiplatforms. It was somewhat justified during the PS3's infancy though.

Yeah, I think they're doing a new Killzone as well. From recent interviews by Herman Hulst Guerrilla Games have definitely moved on (I imagine Horizon is sapping almost all of their resources in the Netherlands), and I think the torch for future KZ titles will have been passed to Cambridge. RIGS is already looking very slick with good reviews so I don't think they're in any danger of getting closed down.

There's no need for a next Killzone, there's a need for a complete Killzone reboot, GoW-style.

That would be fine. Keep the gunplay and gameplay ideas from Mercenary and Shadow Fall but give the whole series a reboot with better writing and characterisation. Cambridge seem well equipped to handle that.

I know he's leaked a lot of stuff that's come true, you don't need to point that out to me, I'm just saying that expecting that expecting any AAA announcements from Japan Studio in 2017 is cray cray. Based on everything we've seen, Japan Studio have two AAA games in full production at a time (Puppeteer and Knack -> Gravity Rush 2 and TLG) and both of those games are coming out in the next few months. It'll be a while before they're ready to show their next two games.

Externally developed game announcements are possible though. Like I'd be surprised if Bloodborne 2 isn't announced next year.

I vaguely remember a mod saying something like that but I may have mixed it up with something else.

You guys think they should just ditch PSVR after they apparently did a very good job with RIGS?

There is no need for anything Killzone. Guerrilla Games moved on and is creating an awesome new IP with HORIZON Zero Dawn. Cambridge Studio aka Guerrilla Cambridge is a different studio. Let them make their own IPs like RIGS.

What Sony needs is a new First-Person-Shooter IP. We already had 4 Killzone games on home consoles and two Killzone games on handhelds.
Resistance is dead.

Time for a new SONY FPS IP.

No no, Killzone VR compatible is my bet

Sony should fund a grounded story heavy WW2 shooter. Its time for them to comeback

I would not be surprised if Bloodborne 2 is announced at E3 next year for an 2018 release. Three years would be a good turnaround without it feeling like it's coming too soon.

I think that entirely depends on how well RIGS sells and how well the headset sells. I don't want GG Cambridge's fate tied to unsuccessful hardware like so many other Sony studios. I wonder how feasible it would be to develop a new game (FPS most likely) and have it work on PS4/PS4 Pro and also have built-in functionality for the PSVR headset.

On the one hand, there's so much I like about Killzone despite how poor the storytelling and world-building has been, so I'd be quite happy with a reboot (especially if it was a chance to bring back Brian Cox as Scolar Visari). On the other hand it has a certain amount of 'taint', and they might be better ditching it altogether and creating a new IP. Despite their reliance on marketing deals like Destiny and COD I still think Sony would be wise to invest in their own FPS IP, even if it didn't work out very well for them last gen.

Who would make it though? The only viable studio to make an FPS is Guerrilla Cambridge, and at that point they might as well just make another Killzone.

Maybe an external developer? Human Head, Starbreeze and Digital Extremes have all had a lot of experience with FPSs. If it were me I would probably be knocking on the door of Three Fields Entertainment to see if they were interested, as they are predominantly made up of ex-Criterion staff, and I thought Black was amazing as their first attempt at the genre.

Eh, they're basically a FPS dev these days and their last two games have reviewed well, I think they're pretty safe regardless of what happens to PSVR. I'm more concerned about PSVR's future because Sony's shown numerous times that they're AWFUL at supporting two systems simultaneously.

Oh man, I'd mark the fuck out if they signed Human Head to develop not-Prey 2. Someone needs to.

Guerrilla Cambridge!

But not Killzone. It's not their IP. Let them make their own IP. We had enough Killzone games. Six Killzone games during 3 generations.

I would very much like to see GG Cambridge make their own FPS IP. They've always designed fantastic games; it's that sometimes the execution hasn't been particularly good (i.e. Primal & Ghosthunter). From a pure gameplay perspective Killzone Mercenary is probably their best game. I'd love them to just be allowed to go wild and make a new FPS of their own invention. (Although, as I said before, I'd be happy with a Killzone reboot as well if they went down that route).

Seriously; why hasn't this happened yet?! Unless they've gone on some kind of blacklist after what went down with Bethesda, I don't understand why other publishers weren't rushing to sign them up.

Yeah, that bothers me too. Its been 10 years since Prey and they still havent had the chance to make anything on that level again, which is a real shame

Bethesda own all of Prey 2's assets, so they'd have to start from scratch, but I can't see them being blacklisted or anything.

I really hope we see their vision for Prey 2 eventually. Just the idea of an open world sci-fi bounty hunter game was so immediately promising that it's a real pity Bethesda had to be slimy scumbags over it.

They did have the chance but then Bethesda fucked them over. That's the problem.

Yeah, I remember the trailer and the previews some press folk wrote at the time, its sounded so hype. A real shame
