Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

The Last of Us II isn't gonna be heard from until next year at the earliest, and you can take that to the bank. We really don't need to hear anything more, and they wouldn't have much to show anyways. Let Naughty Dog cook in the lab for a while.

It doesn't sound liket hey plan on going dark for an extended period of time. Here's what Neil said when it was announced

It’s still early days for the project—the game’s release is a ways off—but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.

I'd like to think Sony has finally cracked the formula of success. They can spread their exclusive from Q1 to Q3 and then let the AAA 3rd party juggernauts battle it out during Q4 while they also take their share of the marketing partnerships and holiday console sales.

They lucked into it more than planned for it. Almost all of there early year games this gen were scheduled to come out in the fall except for MLB (obviously), Bloodborne and maybe Uncharted 4. Infamous: Second Son, The Order: 1886, Horizon: Zero Dawn and so on were planned for fall.

Where comes this rumor from about sucker punch's game being multiplatform?

There is no rumour. A random Costarican posted a made up list of games to be shown at E3 and the had a SP game as multiplatform, among other nonsense. There is zero substance behind it.

And it's also a mistake by that site. The original source has the Sucker Punch game (which they refer to as Project Oscar) down as a PS4-only game. The site that then picked it up mistakenly added the Xbox One as another platform it would be released on.

Man, 1 project studio is so wasteful. They should have had small team prototyping ideas at least when they're making first light. :(

They specifically agreed to being purchased by Sony because they wanted to remain a 1 project studio and developing games that way is risky if you're independent.

Here's what I think Sony's slate of major releases is going to look like (not all of their games as some I haven't really been following, like Everybody's Golf):

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - June-August 2017
Knack 2 - August-September
Gran Turismo Sport - October-November
From Software next/Bloodborne 2 - February 2018
God of War - March
Spider-Man - May-July
Days Gone - July-September
Sucker Punch - early 2019
The Last of Us 2 - Summer 2019
Death Stranding - late 2019

Obviously that's not including other E3 bombs that are yet to be announced, like Colony Wars, Alundra and Savage Starlight!

This is the most realistic release schedule I've seen round these parts.
I'd just remove From Software, aren't all their next games multiplatform?

They said their working on three new games, one which would unveil and launch in 2017. Nothing has been said on the platform.

Ignoring Verendus hints, Yoshida reiterated many times he wants to continue work with From.

I think if the Scorpio leaves a big impression, Sony is more likely to push one of their major titles for this year as I think some of them are quite far along the way or even almost finished. Otherwise, there is just no reason to directly compete with the major blockbusters of third parties, which Sony has been preventing this generation.

Looks reasonable, yes. Btw, Sony also has the following games in their pipelines:
-Detroid: Become Human by Quantic Dreams
-Dreams by Media Molecule.

Oh? Interesting!

I've not really got into their Soulsbourne games or keep up with FROM news in general, but I'm hoping their new IP or whatever is something that I can finally get into.

I don't think the Scorpio, even if revealed amazingly well, is going to do much to force anyones hand. That seems like a product based on a misreading of the market releasing in the wrong year.

This fall is going to be pretty crazy in terms of games and platforms. With Switch being pretty darn successful and the PS4/XB1 dropping even further in price, not to mention one of the biggest games we'll see this gen dropping (Destiny 2), I just don't see how a higher priced, enthusiast aimed console will force anyones hand.

Seems to me more that Sony and Nintendo are going to be fighting for the market at large and MS is just courting their own base.

i think 3rd parties looking better on Scorpio might sway some enthusiast to jump back into the ecosystem. But yeah, overall, I don't think people care too much about 1080p upgraded to 4K. Scorpio seems like it's basically a Super Pro, it's going to sell like Pro I believe.

This is a particularly bad year to launch as well, I agree. The generation is just getting started and some of the strongest software is releasing. I just don't think the gap is big enough for laymen gamer to take notice. It was larger in the PS2 Xbox era and so many still didn't care.

Some of my early E3 predictions from the Sony Stage

- Uncharted Lost Legacy (Release date/gameplay or trailer)
- Sucker Punch New IP Reveal (Teaser)
- Knack 2 (Release Window / Trailer)
- Detroit Become Human (Release Date / Trailer)
- God Of War (Release date late 2017 / Trailer)
- Death Stranding (Another CG Trailer from Kojipro)
- FF7 Remake or KH3 (Not both) (Trailer / Gameplay)
- A little bit of upcoming VR titles (Ace Combat 7 in there with release date)
- Probably a Fromsoft game could be Armored Core or Bloodborne 2 with Japan Studios
- Wild (Gampelay / Trailer)
- Spiderman (Gameplay / Trailer)
- Days Gone (Release Window / Maybe Release Date)
- Maybe footage from Resident Evil 2 Remake
- Maybe a Ni-No Kuni 2 Release Date

Once again, Sucker Punch is 2018.

We are close to organizing an intervention for you so you can let that idea go lol

That looks far more realistic to me. The only change I might make is swapping Spider-Man and Days Gone around.

These combined are prob the exact date preditcion list I would make too

Seems very plausible. I would hope to see Shenmue III and one more surprise.

Last Death Stranding trailer was not in CG so i doubt there will be a CG one this time.

There wouldn't be a shovel big enough to dig the shit out of my pants if a new and legit Ape Escape got announced. That's a new dream for E3 right there, now that the likes of TLG and Shenmue III have been taken up.

Reminiscing about last years E3, the God Of War 10 minute gameplay video is now the second most watched video on PlayStation channel on YouTube with almost 16.5M views, thats insane.
for a 10 minute video.

Spider-man also got a lot of traction since then, its the 5th most video watched on PlayStation channel and has reached 12.3M views on that channel alone! When you add in the views from Marvel's and Insomniac channels its at over 15.6M. Amazing numbers

Damn, Uncharted just smashing it.

No the new Assassin's Creed game will probably be on the Ubisoft stage.

Assassin's Creed is always on Ubisoft and either MS/Sonys stage. Ubisoft usually has the cinematic cg trailer and then Sony or Microsoft has the gameplay demo.

Black Flag was Sony
Unity was Microsoft
Syndicate was Sony

Wouldn't be surprised if MS has it this year though.

So, are we to assume that MS has Assassin's Creed this year?
I think AC is typically associated with Sony, with the exception of Unity in 2014. Although, Sony have so many marketing deals this year, they may not necessarily be too concerned about letting a relatively minor one like AC fall away (and Microsoft will probably be trying to lock down as many big third party marketing deals as they can, to showcase their new hardware, so there's an incentive there for them to go after a game like AC).

A little off topic, but lets say Assassin's Creed doesn't come this year, what do people expect from Ubisoft towards Christmas?

They've got another Far Cry lined up. It may or may not make it this year, but it's definitely in development. So, unless they've also got some unannounced new IP like we saw with Steep last year, either FC or AC will be their big Christmas title. It seems unlikely that we'll see new entries for The Division or Rainbow Six anytime soon. And PoP seems to be on ice.

You know, I'm starting to think Ubisoft might actually have a pretty decent E3 this year with a lot of new games being announced. Everything but South Park and Star Trek (which releases in May) from last year's E3 has now been released and I'm not really sure if we've heard about what they might have in store for us at this E3.

Maybe we finally see their new Pirate IP.

We'll almost definitely see AC: Empires.

I think AC is a lock for holiday. If not it has to be Far Cry. They don't like to go into the holiday season naked without a holiday blockbuster

Also hoping we see a new Splinter Cell. Please Ubi don't let ya boy down

GoW is gonna be massive. I think they're going all out with a combat demo this E3 to counter the 'they turned it into TLoU' criticisms leveled by some.

Yeah, I think we could see a more traditional GoW set-piece. Cory said that they're sitll in the game. But the point of the original demo was to show those that may have lost interest in GoW, or may have never had any interest in the first place, that this was something different. They may only get one chance to change the minds of those people while diehard fans of the series will stick around even if the initial demo wasn't exactly what they wanted.

You're missing some pretty important stuff, and also disregarding that if Sony sticks to their plan (no reason not to), the PS5 will likely be announced Q1 2019 for a November 2019 release.

With that in mind, I find the following possible calendar to be more likely imo

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - June-August 2017
Knack 2 - July-September 2017
Spiderman - July-September 2017
Gran Turismo Sport - October 2017
Dreams - November / December 2017
God of War - December 2017
From Software next/Bloodborne 2 - February 2018
Days Gone - March 2018
WilD - May/ June 2018
Detroit - September 2018
FF7R - November / December 2018
Sucker Punch New IP - March 2019 (at the latest, I could also see a late 2018 if Sony was very confident and if ready)
Death Stranding - April 2019
The Last of Us 2 - May/ June 2019

I don't know, I think after Syndicate the next AC is in a 'it'll be released when it's ready' position. A botched release like Unity would probably be a fatal blow to the series relevancy, and even a 'it ain't brilliant but at least it's not broken' release like Syndicate might not revitalise it.

As an aside, I just wanted to say that I think it's pretty brilliant how they did this. It's especially brilliant when they did it. I feel like they probably couldn't have gotten away with such a dramatic shift in the style and tone of the series in, say, 2012 or 2013 (shortly after God of War III, in other words). People probably would have been confused or lukewarm to the idea. But the fact that they're doing it now, so long after the release of the older God of War games, means that people who were younger during the time of those games and interested in them for the action and the spectacle, and who are a little older now, finding themselves at new stages in life and perhaps more interested in more 'mature' entertainment experiences, can be more receptive to the change. They can, in a sense, develop the feeling that their games are 'growing up' with them. From a marketing standpoint, that's pretty smart, I think.

I know last gen was uncharacteristically long, but I still feel like the PS5 won't be announced till 2020 for some reason.

Oh wow yeah, look at all those trailers for Uncharted with huge views, and then that FF7R reveal trailer is still raking it in on the PS channel (even if it's a third party game).
