Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Another big reason Sony's conferences are the talk of the town is because they've finally nailed a format and style that allows them to wow people of all sorts over and over again. Their last two E3 shows have been tight as hell with little to no dead air and barely any forced talking heads, and those that did show were very quick about it, with no time wasted on sales, graphs, or other BS.

Its been games, games, and more games with Sony and that's what people tune into these events for. Not only have they had tons of games but enough huge surprises to generate even more buzz. On top of that their entire presentation is slick and stylish as all Hell with the live orchestra playing along and the really tight scheduling and editing. All in all they've just got these shows down pat and have the games to back up all the slick presentation.

it has nothing to do with Sony and everything to do with their own announcements. Neither 2015 or 2016 were particularly good gears, certainly not when compared to 2013
Heh, I remember liking their 2015 conference. Maybe I'm not remembering it too well

Microsoft's 2015 conference was awesome. It had...

- Gears 4
- Sea of Thieves, a big new IP from Rare after nearly a decade of Kinect development
- Recore, an unexpected new IP with Inafune's involvement
- Forza which is always a great game
- Backwards compatibility
- Rare Replay
- Strong footage of announced games like Halo and Tomb Raider
- Elite controller

It had everything you want in a good press conference. They should aim for something like that every year....

Or just ape what Sony did last year. Honestly every company holding a conference should do that.

Xbox 2015 was pretty well received, as I recall. I think that's when they announced backwards compatibility for Xbox One.

It definitely got overshadowed by Sony's crazy ass show though.

I kinda feel like when it comes to presentations Microsoft are still somewhat stuck in that sort of '00s mindset of having lots of glitz and fluff (celebrity appearances, cars lowered from the ceiling, HoloLens demostrations, etc.). One might argue that at least some of this stuff may be there to make up for a lack of meaty content (i.e., games and big announcements) but I feel like trimming down the conference length and laser-focusing on announcements, services and game trailers like Sony has could do wonders for their presentation.

For 3 consecutive years, MS lived in the shadow of Sony on E3. I really would like to see them do better, but I just don't believe they are actually trying to do better. Which is a crazy situation. I don't even remember when was the last big game they announced. They only do one Press Conference in the whole year and they never have enough games for it.

regarding Bloodborne 2 - what if Japan Studio is developing it with the help of some higher ups at FromSoftware that are directing or overlooking the project (like Nier Automata --> PLatinum Games/Yoko Taro)

Which would also mean that Miyazaki wasn't lying

so bloodborne 2 by Japan Studio
new exclusive IP by FromSoftware/Miyazaki

It's possible, but I'd have Japan Studio make a new jrpg.

For this year, im expecting Microsoft to have the best or second best conference this year behind Sony.

I'm expecting and looking forward to the following -

- Middle Earth: Shadow of War
- Assassin's Creed Empire
- Forza Motorsport 7
- Crackdown 3
- Sea of Thieves
- State of Decay 2
- PlayGround Games new IP teaser trailer

If there's a good amount of gameplay running off of Scorpio, the above in itself is a good conference. Will all come down to how they look/run/play during the conference.

I love Ubisoft but im fully expecting them to be third or fourth depending on what Bethesda shows the night before. One thing is certain - EA's press conference will be the worst simply because they had BF1 and TF2 a year ago and their conference still sucked. Imagine this year with only SWBF2 and sports games. LOL.

Back to Sony, I forgot to add Knack 2 to my previous list of games that I see being released for the remainder of 2017 (WipeOut Collection, Crash Trilogy, GT Sport and Uncharted TLL).

I think that SP new IP will be revealed like Days Gone was last year. Story Trailer followed by gameplay trailer. Only difference is that this will be back to back as opposed to Days Gone closing out the press conference. This year, I think that it will be RDR2 unless it gets delayed to 2018 which is a he possibility. In this scenario, I think that Uncharted TLL closes out the show simply because they will have the release date ready for it and that's an excellent way to close out the show in my opinion.

That list does nothing for me. Sick of seeing Forza, I think sea of thieves looks boring unless they have been holding back things your able to do in that game.

And assassins creed and shadow of war are third party which one already has shown a bunch of gameplay in so what else is there to do on a stage?

I think Nintendo has a better chance than Microsoft coming in second or First if they really show new games. If Nintendo showed a new metroid game I'd shit my pants.

But even at least Sony's shows more gameplay from thing's they've announced like spiderman, days gone, Detroit, and a shenmue gameplay trailer they will still be the talk of the town regardless if scorpio is the real deal.

Games are what people care about during a generation. And Sony's first party even Third party exclusives have been destroying everyone else who attends E3.

With that in mind, I find the following possible calendar to be more likely imo

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - June-August 2017
Knack 2 - July-September 2017
Spiderman - July-September 2017
Gran Turismo Sport - October 2017
Dreams - November / December 2017
God of War - December 2017
From Software next/Bloodborne 2 - February 2018
Days Gone - March 2018
WilD - May/ June 2018
Detroit - September 2018
FF7R - November / December 2018
Sucker Punch New IP - March 2019 (at the latest, I could also see a late 2018 if Sony was very confident and if ready)
Death Stranding - April 2019
The Last of Us 2 - May/ June 2019

You think this is MORE likely? The predicted schedule you quoted is far more realistic than yours. We're not going to have both Spider-Man and God of War this year. Probably neither.

Seriously. I've always thought that MS had a great couple of E3s recently but were just overshadowed by The Last Guardian, Shenmue, FF7R and the rest. Maybe I'm misremembering.

It's all relative. You also have to remember that the hype of a conference can make you feel a certain way about it

Last one was kinda dry, I think. 2014 seemed pretty well received as it put the spotlight on lots of new games after the PR debacle they experienced in 2013.

Microsoft are pretty much never terrible at E3, I think. It's just that they're not often super awesome, either.

If this is what MS is going with, Sony and Nintendo will blow them out of the water. Let's look at Nintendo, they have Mario, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, possible Smash, Pikman, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, team Retro's game, etc. As for Sony, they have Spiderman, Days Gone, UC TLL, GTS, Knack 2, Detroit, SP's new game, Japan Studio game headed by BB's producers, Dreams, FFVIIR? lol, possible Shenmue collection, and Housemarque's game.

It's all relative. You also have to remember that the hype of a conference can make you feel a certain way about it

I wouldn't say I was particularly hyped about it, just that I had it in my mind that 2015 and 16 were good conferences.

Googling it now, the list above is missing a bunch of games that featured during MS's conference, such as:

Halo 5 - new gameplay footage
Fallout 4 - new gameplay, mods announcement, Fallout 3 bundled in
The Division - new trailer and exclusive beta announcement
Gigantic - beta announcement (what happened to this anyway?)
Bunch of indie games, including Dean Hall's new mess
Rise of the Tomb Raider - debut gameplay footage
Fable Legends - new trailer
Gears of War Remaster - announcement
Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 - announcement
Dark Souls 3 - announcement
Rare Replay - announcement
Xbox One backwards compatability

And that was just 2015!

So while not a brilliant E3 in terms of announcing new exclusives and shit, still an all-round great show. I think the list above is fairly disingenuous.

Even though it's not their game your forgetting SHenmue 3. Which will be first on Playstation that announcement made waves so showing a gameplay trailer with possible date will melt minds.

While Forza Horizon 3 was awesome, I don't care about FM7 (or GT Sport for that matter) whatsoever. Sea of Thieves looks good but not for me. Crackdown 3 is what im expecting to be the showcase for Scorpio so im definitely interested in seeing that. Also want to see what PG new IP is and im hyped for State of Decay 2.

I can understand in regards to Shadow of War but I still want to see it running on a Scorpio and being played off of Scorpio on stage. Also very much looking forward to the return of AC.

Nintendo wise, while I'll definitely play Zelda and Mario, it's still the same stuff from them. Like Microsoft, you know what to expect and know what you're getting. To me, anyone who bashes Microsoft because all they have is Halo, Gears and Forza should do exactly the same with Nintendo because well, both are exactly the same. You know what you're getting from both with a little different game here and there thrown in.

Sony obviously has a lot more first party studios, games and IP's compared to Microsoft but I do prefer not knowing about games as opposed to knowing and then having to wait two years or so. Simply would prefer a shorter turnaround from debut to release.

In general, PlayStation 4 Pro as of right now is my primary with Xbox One Slim and Switch being used only for the exclusives that im interested in playing. However, if Scorpio allows the multi-platform games to look and run better, the Pro and Slim may be swapped.

As a gamer, im interested in all of their conferences. Okay, except EA because well, I don't play sports games anymore and they don't have much else that interests me.

But shu Yoshida has actually played it which means it's way past prototype phase and that was sometime back in 2015.

Source 29 Minutes in.

Doesn't really mean that much. At most he was probably playing a very early vertical slice.

Microsoft's 2015 conference was awesome. It had...

- Gears 4

Eh, that looks impressive as a list but from my memory the Gears 4 announcement fell flat, the Halo 5 demo was by the numbers, Recore was a really short CG trailer and the Forza segment spent more time on the car coming down from the ceiling than the game itself. The biggest thing they had there was the backwards compatibility announcement, which was awesome and unexpected, but I don't think it was a great conference overall, especially not compared to Sony's one. Still far, far better than last year's though, where Sea of Thieves was the one and only highlight.

My conference ranking predictions for this year is something along the lines of:
Sony > Nintendo >> Microsoft > Ubisoft > Bethesda >>> EA

CoD, Forza and bad EA conferences are the three E3 constants.

In general, I agree but for me personally, not so much from Nintendo's side. I see Nintendo as the same as Microsoft. You know what you're getting with a few new titles throughout the generation.

Outside of Mario, none of those games interest me whatsoever. Retro is 50/50 depending on what the franchise/game/genre is. Microsoft's exclusives are second for me behind Sony.

Sony wise, there's a bunch. Spider-Man, Days Gone, Uncharted TLL, Detroit, pretty much any game from Housemarque and looking forward to seeing SP's new IP since I never liked or had any interest in Infamous whatsoever. Knack 2 is 50/50.

Japan Studio doesn't interest me. I still think Dreams will bomb and FFVIIR shouldn't even be made. I literally have no interest in FF but I know that FFVII was a classic for it's time and why it's just that but in no way, shape or form should SE be remaking that game. If anything, it's an insult and a disgrace to the legacy of FFVII. And hell, I don't even like or care about the FF franchise. Never have and never will. I am interested in Shenmue III but im not expecting it until late 2018 or 2019.

It's all about what interests you bud. Like I said, I think that Microsoft will be first or second best as they have had good shows the last two years. It simply comes down to what appeals to you. Nintendo is just "meh" to me for the most part and just way too behind and stuck in the past with all of their games. Plus, I think that Mario will get delayed or "held" until March 2018 in favor of Pokémon this Fall which is probably the smarter move but for me personally, it means that the Switch will sit in the box way longer than the Xbox One Slim does.

Also. I've realized over the years that Nintendo's unwillingness to put their talented first parties on to trying out new IP's is as good a reason as any why I stopped fucking wit em.

so bloodborne 2 by Japan Studio
new exclusive IP by FromSoftware/Miyazaki

Honestly, I'm not sure Japan Studio have the resources for that, and we've seen that a Soulsborne game without Miyazaki at the helm doesn't necessarily turn out all that great. That being said, I expect they'll be busy with Knack 2, Toyama's next (a new IP) and perhaps at least one new game aside from that. Unless the big new JRPG is real, which at this point I doubt.

Playground only announced their intention of expanding a few months ago. No way are they going to be ready to announce anything for a long while yet. State of Decay 2 is interesting and while it'll be interesting to finally see more of Crackdown, they desperately need some big new IPs which aren't announced with a CGI trailer and 3+ years out. Sea of Thieves does look great, but this'll be its third E3, assuming it doesn't launch in the next two months. As for the others, I don't think multi-format games are really something to get excited for at a platform holder's conference.

Bloodborne 2's probably not happening yall

The original sold well over 2 million copies (I'd estimate 2.5 - 3 million by now) and it's one of the most highly acclaimed exclusives this generation. I'd be pretty surprised if Sony does not pursue a sequel.

I hope he doesn't spoil announcements mere days before they're due to be revealed, like he did with PSX last year.

Yeah, I know you got kinda dogpiled when you made that topic, but I'm not a fan of this behaviour either. I can't imagine how devs feel about it either; having their big trade show announcements spoiled a few days before by insiders on Twitter looking for their five minutes of Internet Fame.

I am still surprised about those who still think GOW will be out this year. We must be surprised if it releases this year, not the opposite. Don't hang your hopes on that very much.
2017 is already full of great games, Sony can't waste GOW for it and keep 2018 empty. Death Stranding and Sucker Punch game are far away, so Sony has to keep reserve for next year.

Sony can pursue all they want but they can't force From to make more Bloodborne. What if From wants to work on something else?

Devs lie all the time but I don't think we'll see any kind of Souls game for a while

I'm honestly really excited to see what Ubisoft has in store for us this year. Outside of South Park and the very little we know of the next Assassin's Creed game, their conference is a total mystery. They've already released every other big game that they have shown off up to this point.

IN for that "Shenmue delayed to 2018 but here is Shenmue HD collection available ____" announcement.
I'd like this too, but it depends on:

- SEGA coordinating with YSnet on a release schedule, which may not happen. SEGA has rightly distanced themselves from Shenmue III as the rights holder and nothing more, and may not want to rock that boat to invoke another stupid fucking funding confusion from the games press.

- SEGA coordinating with Sony for a joint announcement/marketing deal. It's likely that SEGA may do its own thing in regards to Shenmue HD without having to get a platform holder involved, which means making their own announcement plans on their own terms.

After the last 2 train wrecks at E3 for Ubisoft they are low on the totem poll. Bethesda has had a much better track record and more pumped to see wolfenstein sequel and what else they have cooking than to watch Aisha Tylor cringe.
Especially how Ubisoft has made their last couple releases feel like games as a service, and souless.

Watchdogs feels like AC and GTA had a boring baby. For honor is awesome concept and gameplay is solid, but the shitty Microtransactions in that is pure garbage. Steep was bad, Farcry Primal unneeded and uninspired.
Rainbow six, and the division are the only thing's outside of Southpark that seem to have any kind of soul.
Until I see Beyond good and evil or that new Rabbid game with Mario for switch I don't care.

So many games I haven't cared that E3 is coming up.
First time in a while.
Wonder how Sony will manage new and old. Feels so weird that something like TLOU2 wasn't saved for E3.
