Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I think there is a thermometer for the limit of what you can put on screen in this game otherwise the scene will be very crowded and performance choppy. I really hope they increase the limit on PS4 PRO and not just the resolution, allowing more props and meshes on screen, hence special PS4 PRO only levels. It has to happen. It is like developing a game on PC using a game engine and not all PCs could run all of the assets. Looking forward to how they are going to dela with that.
This is a really bad idea.

Everyone shares the same dreams.

What if they actually do take this the route that devs actually do right now with PS4 games. All levels must work on regular PS4, but at the same time certain levels can have Pro specific enhancements/variations if the creators want.

But yeah, I don't think that's feasible/enforceable so more than likely the Pro enhancements for this game will likely just end up boiling down to higher resolution + better performance rather than increased level budgets.

There's plenty of things they can tweak the quality of without locking pieces of content out.

A year ago Alex Evans was talking about overhauling the lighting with something more like The Tomorrow Children's.

You know when Physx was introduced when it belonged to Ageia, they needed a Physics card to run on PC. One of the example games supporting it was UT3 having specific Physx maps locked to that card. The day Nvidia bought Ageia and managed to make Physx run on its GPUs, those maps were playabale on NVidia GPUs and even introduced on PS3 version including the Lego Map.
Physics can run on ATI GPUs these days but not as good as with NVidia GPUs.

I don't think having PS4 PRO specific levels or maps would hurt the game. Maybe the dves don't need to include them in the base game but let players upload them to the cloud and let PS4 PRO owners download them and play them.
No one would suffer in this case scenario. On the contrary this would make the game even shine more and showcase the PS4 PRO power especially if Dreams is labelled as game engine in a game.

Having The Tomorrow Children lighting tech would be awesome in the game. With PS4 PRO, they have the GPU power to do it.

I think there's a chance if Matterfall hitting this year (someone said otherwise a few pages back).

Resogun took 20 months to develop. By E3 we'll be hitting about that since that cgi trailer released.

With how 3 was received, I wonder if Sony would make a LBP4.

I imagine they wouldn't bother mostly as, in theory, Dreams will make a 2D creator tool like LBP thoroughly redundant.

LBP4? This would be suicide to do since it will be dwarfed by Dreams and the limitless possibilities it will allow compared to LBP. It is like going back to from the TOP GTA1&2 styles for GTA6 after going fully 3D open world.

Yeah, this basically.

That might have been me. You could be right, however Resogun seems to be a much more simple game than I would assume Matterfall will be. Resogun only has a handful of levels and they're all fairly small in size, and I expect in terms of scale Matterfall will have more in common with Alienation or Dead Nation. It's difficult to judge too much unless we know what kind of game Matterfall is? I would assume an action-platformer from the initial trailer, but I have to confess I haven't followed interviews or anything about it so I may have that wrong.

Sounds like a big year for them with external game's.
I think a new IP souls like game is more likely.

Honestly, if their new game is not a Bloodborne sequel then I wouldn't be surprised if it's not at E3, as it would presumably take longer for a new IP than it would a sequel due to asset re-use. But then, it was only about 3 years between Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss and Bloodborne, so maybe I'm underestimating how fast and efficient FromSoft are.

QD'S probably the next studio to look at in terms of Sony acquiring them. Hopefully Detroit gets a good push at E3. Last years trailer was really smart.

They have a pretty good and successful relationship, so I don't see why Sony would have the need to buy QD the way things are. Don't forget they only acquired Sucker Punch because there was apparently another publisher sniffing around with an interest in acquiring them.

Speaking of flame war, I feel that "raise your controversial opinions" thread is an outlet to shitpost without getting reprimanded. I don't know, maybe it's just me though

I've read a couple of pages and I don't think it's really shitposting? There are a bunch of dumb opinions there but nothing I saw that should warrant any kind of reprimanding.

hmmmm starting to think that TLOU2 will show up at E3

https://twitter.com/Neil_Druckmann/status/852319641737207808

Maybe just a cinematic, introducing this new character, then gameplay reveal at PSX.

Honestly, with TLoU2 and Death Stranding I would prefer they hold the games back until they're ready to show actual gameplay. Although both games will be huge so I'm sure we'll see plenty of them over the next couple of years before they're ready to launch.

They posted examples of that as well

i was of the impression dreams doesn't process geometry, since it isn't geometry. didn't they say it wasn't even using the GPU for rasterization at all. it's basically the euclideon "infinite detail" tech as far as i'm aware. it's like point cloud data, it's the reason why they can sculpt freely and merge seemingly infinite shapes and makes things solid, or furry etc. i imagine if it does have a thermometer limit system it will be so hard to max it out it will be practically irrelevant.

Dreams is such an interesting project. It's one of those games that will get mixed reviews, won't sell very well, but will win lots and lots of awards.

I, for one, am glad to see Sony and Media Molecule undertake such a project. It's the stuff like Dreams that make PlayStation stand apart.

It has geometry, just not polygons. Rather than shapes being approximated through polys, they exist as mathematical definitions of the whole geometry. So curved surfaces can be very smooth even when complex, as smooth as the display resolution allows. Hence why there's no visible faceting during the sculpting (unless using a flat-edged tool).

The method is called distance fields, if you want to look up more info. Oculus use it for small text in VR (so letters have a clean, readable shape at any size). And Alex Evans of Media Molecule was responsible for some new techniques using them about a decade ago, before the first Little Big Planet.

yeah, i've noticed objects that seem solid at a distance do break down into individual "dots" when you get super close too. it seems like an impressive solution to memory limits that kinda plagued LBP's creative options.

Having Marketing rights for RDR2, Destiny 2, COD, and now Battlefront 2 should do the trick.
If all these monsters plus some additional one that may be announced in E3 (next AC? Amy Henning's next Star Wars?) are going to be released in a couple of months or so I think Sony will prefer to don't compete with them and instead making happier these 3rd parties with more visibility, marketing, bundles, etc.

They should just push them plus some bundles with Uncharted, Horizon and GT Sports for the Christmas season. If I was Sony I'd release GTS (maybe Dreams too) in early September and make sure Dreams (if it can't be released before mid September), Detroit, Spiderman, God of War and Days Gone are for 2018, separating their releases by a month or two. But in 2018 it's very likely they'll have FFVII, Shenmue 3 and Dragon Quest XI too.

I think Assassin's Creed is going to Microsoft this year also releasing Dreams in that period of time would literally be suicide lol. No way in hell is Dreams selling against Destiny, Battlefront, CoD, etc.
I'm pretty sure Sony has a deal for all the Star Wars games tbh. As of right now all Star Wars related content has been shown off at Sony's conference, from Lego Force Awakens to Disney Infinity 3.0.

If dreams isn't ready for full release before September, then I'm honestly expecting a closed beta (for those that sign up) that will last a few months, an open beta in January a few weeks before release.

The user created stuff from a beta before release is probably the best way to market this.

True. But doesn't matter who has the marketing deal for these games.

The thing is that if you have CoD, Destiny, RDR, Battlefront, the other Star Wars, AC etc (all of them with a potential to sell 10M+ copies) being released in a period of 3 months or so doesn't make sense for Sony to release a 1st party game during this period.

Their marketing channels, number of games people can buy per month and number of different PS4 bundles in store (make sure there will be some with GTS/Uncharted/Horizon there) will be already saturated from October to December. Hell, there is going to be even the new Mario there. They better spread their 1st party games across the rest of the year.

Right. Then proceed to sprinkle first party releases throughout the rest of the year. Sony has the formula down to a tee.

Yup. This, mixed with the amount of great 1st party and -at least timed or console- 3rd party exclusives they have, when spreaded across the whole year makes people see they have a great catalog having always new great stuff to play and avoids having long periods without great releases.

Helps them to sell consoles, helps the players to enjoy more the games and don't miss some of them, helps the devs to sell more copies of their games avoiding canibalization, etc. I like this strategy.

I'm really curious how September will look for releases. November will be stacked as usual. October this gen has been Japan's dumping grounds and I'm guessing that's when Ni No Kuni 2, Knack 2 and a few others will release, plus NBA2K as usual. Early September has Destiny 2, but I think mid and late September will be pretty open. I think Microsoft is going to wait on Forza 7 a little and release it the same day Scorpio comes out. FIFA will be there but I don't think that'll scare anyone away in the US.

I also think Dreams' best shot is to release this fall and be bundled with almost every PSVR.

The only thing that looks out of place here is Ni No Kuni 2. I don't expect it to come out this year, despite the release window they've given. It seems like a really good candidate for the late January/February window that several somewhat niche games found success in this year.

My best guess for Knack 2 is late September. Maybe the 19th or 26th.

I don't expect it this year either bandai already have some nice releases to publish for the rest of the year as well.

Get even.

Let my lil darling ni no kuni 2 cook longer and get a respectable release date

The games is getting to be too much...Sony can honestly slow down with the first party stuff this year. I'm already getting Wipeout collection, Crash Collection, Uncharted expansion, and GTS from them alone, push some stuff back to 2018 please!

I selfishly want this to happen. Release Gt and hot shots golf in whatever month and that's it for the year. Leave knack 2for January Gow and MLB for march and whatever else is 2018

Sounds terrible, dude. =P

Just wait to buy stuff. The only thing that happens if a lot releases this year is things will be cheaper when you get around to them in 2018. I still haven't bought Nioh, for example, but I likely will once it's cheaper. Other third-party stuff like Nier and Yzkuza 0 I'll likely also get once it's dropped in price. The Yakuza remake I'm getting launch day, but that's because it's $29.99. Same with Crash (only that's $39.99).

Also, correction: Crash isn't first party. ;)

After a month's delay, Uncharted: TLL.

I could see Deep Down being at PSX, like Let it Die was, unless they really revamped it/ dumped the F2P model. If it's F2P, I don't think it'll be at the E3 conference at least, probably a blog drop to build hype.

If Deep Down ever returns I hope it's radically different from what they originally showed years ago. It was basically Chalice Dungeon: The Game with less interesting enemies and combat/encounter design no where near as good as Bloodborne or Souls.

I don't mind dungeon crawlers but what we saw was about as boring as can be. Also the Assassin's Creed-style actually set in the future and done through memories bit needs to be buried.

I wonder what Drinkbox is up to. They've gone 3rd party but they started on Playstation. Would be awesome to get an announcement from them. I loved both Tales From Space games (had the top score on two Mutant Blobs Attack levels) and Guacamelee. Wasn't that interested in Severed though.

They have always been 3rd party tho. The reason their games pop up on PS platforms first is because they take part on the Sony Pub Fund program.
