Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I don't see them being close as a problem. Their content other than the featured first-party games will probably differ greatly.

PGW = European devs
PSX = PlayStation fan-service (Ports, localizations, indies, etc.)

I think they plan it to be together. I've seen Geoff saying he thinks it's helpful that both are close. They are pretty different kind of events too.

PSX is my favorite too, I think it's a huge achievement that Sony could make this work. In my opinion, for announcements PSX is now the best place outside of E3.

I think they do too, there is even combo passes that will get you a ticket to both I believe

TGS and the European equivalent are always in a weird space from the perspective of fan interest, because...

From a first-party perspective, TGS is rarely ever interesting. Historically the conferences averages one first-party announcement per year, and the only ones that are exciting for the main communities here are Gravity Rush 2 and The Old Hunters.

There are plenty of other interesting announcements at TGS, but the catering and focus of these showcases are so predominantly Japanese, and gets repeated reannouncements at other events ( localisation announcements of Yakuza, Nioh ) to the point that people forget Nioh was announced at TGS, and not during another event.

Also, this is what I personally note, but 'presentation of a press conference' matters more than one would think. Even when TGS pressers have good content, the presentation are never to the liking of western audiences due to translation, pacing, style and cultural context that it ends up being meh for most, I feel.

I usually agree with your posts, Nightengale, and I agree with most of this one but I have no clue why you'd liken Sony's Gamescom/PGW conferences to TGS of all things.

First off, Sony has had a ton of high profile first party announcements at those shows, from Resistance 3 back in 2010 all the way to GT Sport and Detroit in 2015. With the exception of last year, it's always been Sony's second biggest show of the year.

And secondly, the EU conferences were arguably the best formatted conferences of the year up until others (including SIEA) started learning from them.

As for TGS, you're not wrong and the format in particular does tend to leave bad tastes in people's mouths but when they're good, they're still good shows. Yes we have to deal with a poor format and some very rough live translations but it's easy to forget those issues if we get Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Gravity Rush 2, Gravity Rush Remastered, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters, Yakuza 6, Yakuza Kiwami and Nioh out of it.

I worded it poorly. I meant to say "recently" rather than "always" in the context of the European show, because there is a growing (echo chamber )opinion that Sony should just axe their European/Japanese showings in favour of making their E3/PSX showcases stronger.

It didn't help that last year didn't have a European showcase and Sony has been scaling back, first-party wise on the kind of games that usually premiere at the European event.

I don't really think those people should be paid attention to though. PlayStation is an international brand, not a US centric one like Xbox, so a move like that would be stupid.

You're right that there was no EU conference last year (though didn't SIEE plan the PS Meeting instead?) but I don't see how you could possibly say they're scaling first party announcements at those events back when the last one they had had GT Sport, Detroit, Driveclub Bikes and Matterfall announcements.

I feel like these arguments are coming from an overestimation of what PSX is when Naughty Dog aren't insisting on announcing their next major game (and expansion) there. Last year's PSX was incredible, don't get me wrong, but I don't think we're going to get a repeat of that any time soon.

GT Sport and Detroit were unquestionably big announces, but this gen I've associated it more with games like Tomorrow Children, Rime, Matterfall, etc, which are investments that I'm seeing scaled back. Prior to PSX, games like Edith Finch and Wattam would've been Gamescom/PGW announcements.

It will be interesting to see what kind of show Sony does for the EU conference this year. Normally I have always gone in with the assumption of "we'll see 3-5 interesting first-party indie-scope games, and at least one AAA stuff in the veins of Dreams/Detroit/GT Sport", but I'm not sure how much of that smaller scope games are still in the first-party portfolio.

Prior to PSX Sony would often announce NA mid tier games like CounterSpy and Doki Doki Universe at pretty random times, so who knows if they would've been Gamescom/PGW announcements. And even with PSX, they still do it sometimes, like when they announced Bound a few days before PSX.

But regardless, whether they've scaled back EU mid-tier games, we'll have to wait and see. If they have then I assume we'll see a number of PSVR games instead, as that's where a lot of that mid-tier investment seems to have gone. But I'm sure we'll still see some traditional mid-tier stuff, like maybe (hopefully) Arrowhead's next game.

TGS in general seems to garner the least amount of hype of the big shows due to there simply being far less leaks involved since announcements there are almost entirely made by Japanese studios. A good example of this is DQ Heroes. There were no rumblings about that at all going into TGS 2014. Even with Persona 5's PS4 announcement, there really weren't any rumors even though people expected it to be released on the PS4. By comparison with big US announcements you tend to at least hear something about them. That may be a rumor, job listening, voice/motion capture artists listing games on their resumes etc. But you really don't get that for TGS. So whatever is announced there is usually a surprise.

Yup.

I'm looking forward to TGS. I want some AA tier Japanese games. The big AAA Japanese games will be at PSX/E3.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to TGS and their conference.

So, 4 PlayLink games have been dated and detailed today. We kinda knew some already because of PS Store had their dates, but its now all official.

Hidden Agenda (Oct 24)
In this gritty crime thriller that won Game Critics Awards’ Best Family/Social game at E3, and Best Casual Game at Gamescom, Hidden Agenda invites players to join homicide detective Becky Marney and district attorney Felicity Graves as they investigate the case of a serial killer known as “The Trapper.”
Inspired by videos of gamers playing Until Dawn with their friends and family all shouting out choices, the talented team at Supermassive Games crafted Hidden Agenda with a focus on playing as a group. You and your friends will use your phones to vote on the tough decisions, determining the course of the investigation in this gripping narrative branching story. Remember, characters may live or die based on what your group decides.

Trust plays a big role in Hidden Agenda’s story not just between the characters, but also between members of your group. Someone may receive a “Hidden Agenda” card on their phone (see what they did there?) which awards points for steering the story in a particular direction.
Watch out if your friends are acting particularly sneaky or manipulative. Imagine it as a movie night but you all will be in control of how the story unfolds!

Knowledge is Power (Oct 24)

You like Trivia? We call this a “combative” trivia game, wrapped in a sparkling, shiny package.

From Wish Studios (the same developers of That’s You!), we invite you to test your brainpower inside the Pyramid with more than 5000 questions as well as targeting on your rivals with “Power Plays.” Using your phone or tablet, freeze your opponents’ touch screen so they have to smash through the ice to get to the answer or slime their screens with green gloop so they have to wipe it clean to see the answers. It’s not how smart you are; it’s how dirty you play!

SingStar Celebration (Oct 24)
There’s a SingStar party over here… and everyone’s invited. The latest from our friends at London Studios, SingStar Celebration features 30 hit tracks from current to classic. Grab your smartphone, join your friends, and belt out the biggest hits and pumping party classics.

Share your epic singing moments by uploading videos and photos to the SingStar community and social media. Check out the SingStore for hundreds of extra songs to purchase and add to your collection. If it’s your birthday, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or even just a Saturday night — SingStar Celebration is the perfect playlist to any party.

Frantics (March 13)

Developed by NapNok Games, this is manic mini-game madness! Up to eight players can join in on each challenge — bumping, bluffing, and backstabbing in quick succession. Explore a full range using your phone/tablet as an intuitive controller — shake, tilt, swipe, use the camera, and don’t be too surprised if the host — the wise-cracking Fox — calls you to offer bonus secret missions. Take your animal and go head-to-head with your friends for complete barnyard domination!

After That's You!, I have to admit that I'm genuinely looking forward to more of the PlayLink games. I feel that they absolutely nailed what they wanted to do with the line. Using smartphones as controllers ended up being a far more brilliant solution to the non-gamer barrier than I expected.

Hidden Agenda in particular feels like a sleeper.

In a weird way Bruce leaving makes me MORE excited about Naughty Dog going forward. Kurt and Shaun proved with The Lost Legacy that they're more than capable of stepping up and they undoubtedly have a ton of great ideas of their own. I know it's early but I think they will be the ones in charge of Naughty Dog's next new IP.

Looks like Adam Boyes going to PlayStation to pitch a new game idea. https://youtu.be/IFjKQH7_OvQ?t=2m16s

Cool find

Lost Legacy is great but I wouldn't say it showed that the director's have tons of great ideas of their own. It was kindof a remix of Uncharted 2 and 4 (which isn't a bad thing)

That's not what I mean. Just an assumption that they have cool ideas for games and mechanics going forward.

that was about 4 months ago, but anyway... the farewell kiss between Keiichiro Toyama and Yasuhiro Kitao (now the former head of marketing for SIE Japan Studio):

Here's a hint at how music/audio design may be physicalised for accessibility in Dreams:

https://www.playstationjobs.co.uk/vacancy/1943-Audio-Programmer
A core part of our game Dreams is a powerful musical instrument, which can also be used for sound design. It's fun to play with, but also has depth. We want you to help us make it even better – for professionals, hobbyists and anyone in the PlayStation Games audience who wants to express themselves creatively.

Do you all think we'll see Sucker Punch at PSX in December? I really liked Second Son and First Light so I'm eager to see what they've been working on.

Man, PGW is too far away. Can't wait to see the return of Dreams.

Yeah, MM had a sound design tool/sequencer for making music in LBP. Going by the description it maybe similar but a fair bit more in depth with tools. DSP and low level coding is the fundamental basis for plug ins and software in the audio industry related to sound design or music recording. I'll be interested to see what they come up with, especially to make it accessible for everyone. A fully fledged DAW wouldn't be the best way to go about it honestly, it would just confuse users probably. I'd apply but never done any DSP and coding myself, just mixing/mastering, post production surround, some foley/found sounds creation, editing and composition.

I know it doesn't matter... but are Toyama and Kitao gay? or is it some kind of Japanese customs when there's someone you care about who leaves?

For some reason... it does shed some light on the kind of relationship Kat has with Raven and Cyd (
aka Alias
)... which I totally approve. :D

With Aloy, Kat (GR2), Chloe (UCLL) and soon Ellie (TLOU2), I kinda like this new direction from Sony to feature strong female protagonists as the main characters.

I'm not 100% sure, but probably latter. I guess it's just a cultural thing, like it was in USSR.
