Sony press conference announcements

man I thought this thread would have BIG announcements, not a web browser and a new color.

GAF disappoints.

The PSP game is something by NAMCO so its not the Animal Crossing game. And that's not DW6 (I thought it was too when I first saw the pic) its Ni Oh.

Read the whole of the thread?
I had very low expectations so I'm happy :)

New Square demos and DMC4 were not shown, me and Anoop were just fucking with Sho Nuff since he left early, sorry Sho.

I gotta write this up for 1up, but some brief impressions:

Level 5's RPG (Rogue Galaxy) looks SHIT hot. The CG was fucking unbelievable, I can't wait until their PS3 games actually look like it - better than Appleseed digital animation on fantastic characters ... so yummy. Had like a five minute trailer with hi-res cinemas, battle footage, world map (all three party members on screen), lots of varied environments. Game itself looks like an expanded DQVIII engine in terms of cel-shading. As far as the content, just think of it as Skies of Arcadia II, by way of Star Ocean ... it's all Space Pirates, and it looks really, really good. 12/05.

A lot of PS2 soft, but not so much of it looks good. There was like 10 seconds of new FFXII CG (of 5 judges walking).

PSP is a fucking embarassment, they had some guy come and talk for like 10 minutes about a game that's like Animal Crossing except with no gameplay and fuck ugly. The big deal for PSP is 9/14 Advent Children, 9/15 Ceramic White PSP + Winning Eleven. So expect a huge repush in the fall.

PS3, Sho Nuff left before the end. Koei showed a new real-time demo of a guy staff-fighting four other people, looked pretty good. Bandai showed a Gundam game that looked FUCKING EMBARASSING, it was realistic Zakus bump-mapped but with terrible animation and non-destructable environments. They talked about how they made it from scratch without using middleware as if this were something to be proud of. Project Force actually looks pretty good (those screens make it look terrible)...it's not OMG amazing, but the environments are all fully destructable, and it was clearly real-time with a rock-solid framerate, which makes it okay to get excited about if you like mech games because it's not just "concept" footage. Tim Sweeney was here to demo the Unreal engine which was nice.

Other new games shown included Endless Saga (Korean game from Webzen), Genji PS3 (which was SUCH prerendered CG you lying liars), Lair (Factor 5 with like 100 dragons that are all WAAAAY too shiny, the generation hasn't even started yet and everything is already too shiny and slimy), and Bio 5. Bio 5 looks like Bio 4 only hi-res, pretty much. Couldn't tell much from the demo - looks like Latin American slums, starts out dark but some birds take off and it becomes daylight and then some shadows of zombies lumber out of the sun.

Ken Kutaragi took like, 5 minutes after he said "that's all, thank you for coming," to actually end. Went on forever and ever and ever. Now to write it up!

EDIT: Sorry, Bio 5 WAS shown.

meh! then i might just go out and do something with my life today.

I edited my post but just to be clear Bio 5 was shown. This is what I get for typing it up for GAF first in a hurry (from door-to-door this event was 7 hrs out of my afternoon and evening, I'm a bit groggy).

Anoop got video of everything - he drew the center position in the filming lottery and it looks great, so check for it on IGN later.

Oh, they also gave us this leather and brushed metal PSP strap and a clear/black lucite PSP stand that is going to make me mad eBaynk. To ho ho.

They're gonna need it. Latest rumour has it that New Super Mario Bros might be out on 13 September, the 20th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros on Famicom. Not forgetting a certain multi-license release early next month ;)

Ugh, look what happens when I go out to work. This thread is long and unweildy :P Someone should put everything we've got sofar in the original post or something..

I'm forgetting it, subtlety is lost on me at this point.

OH, Sony showed a Brain Training game for PSP, hahaha copycat fucktards.

Also, portable TV (www.p-tv.jp) looks pretty cool, they seemed to have a lot of networks and content providers on board to provide downloadable PSP-format content of recent television shows, etc. If they partnered with Tivo or something in the US for something similar it would be pretty damn nice.

I'm kinda pissed I finally get a release date for my White PSP and Sony did not show anything amazing for games... getting owned left and right by the DS without software :(

The big news was in middleware announcements ... Sony announced a lot of partnerships, probably the biggest one was that Havoc Complete and Aegia (physics) will be included in the PS3 SDK and (this is the REALLY important part) that "front line support" will be SCEI themselves. The big barrier for Japanese companies adopting a lot of NA middleware has been lack of proper support and documentation here, so Sony INCLUDING these two libraries and more importantly providing the support should be really helpful news in Japan for bringing developers into the 21st century. Maybe they'll start backing up their code!

Also, it bears repeating that if you like JRPGs, Rogue Galaxy is going to jump to the top of your radar as soon as the footage gets online. It looks to have good characters, non-cliched settings, gorgeous graphics and high-production values all around. It's an AAA-level game and Sony's going to push it HUGE. Get ready.

That's pretty interesting. Good job.

Nice to see them beef up their internal tools capability with SNSystems too.

While riding in to work I was thinking... why was an American wrestling game debut at this event?

"Comimg soon!" according to the website :lol
Yeah, it could be cool, though they are sure to charge ridiculous prices for anime. It would be nice if they could rerun TV dramas but I doubt Sony has much to do with the regular terrestrial channels. We'll see. AXN and Animax-a-go-go, I expect.

Is this logo a standard one for anything 'network' or is it possibly the logo for anything related to 'PlayStation World'?

PSP Network, I think that's all. Like the Music and Game and Movie menus.

the mech game looks terrible.

Which one? The FROM title?

That doesn't look terrible at all. It certainly isn't amazing, but it's hardly terrible. It's more detailed than most of the 360 stuff shown too.

from028wi.jpg

from053ku.jpg

This all looks less or on par with X360 stuff we saw, where is the CGI grfx Ken was talking about

Wait...what else was shown besides the FROM title? Any pics?

Whats taking so long? Why is it so hard to upload the RE images together with the other stuff (Gundam, Ni-Oh etc)?

Same here. Seriously, yesterday so many people were saying they weren't expecting anything noteworthy, just a bunch of power points, Kutaragi jerking off on the audience, etc. I'm honestly surprised we've got anywhere near this many announcements/new info from this show.

Now I just hope they're going to bring the PSP goods big time for TGS. PS3, too, but jesus they really need to show the good stuff for the PSP.

Hmm, I don't get why everyone is saying the PS2 lineup was weak.

--Rogue Galaxy
--Tales of Legendia
--FFXII
--KHII
--Wanda
--PSU
--Devil Summoner

...are all pretty hot stuff coming soon and hell Suikoden Tactics/Xenosaga ep3 could end up good too. Seems like a really great lineup for 2005. And hey, it's only July there's probably a ton of big games still unannounced for the rest of the year (where are Capcom's xmas games?)

i need to see rogue galaxy!!! :D

on a side note, i think the name is unfortunate because we're going to have rouge galaxy misspellings everywhere a la rouge leader...

And Grandia III!

I think the problem is that most of those games had literally 15 second clips shown. Some got 30, but none got full "trailers." The music was overlapping between one and the next, they were run so closely together. So it was hard to get "hyped" about any of them. And yeah, those games all look good, but very little "new" was shown PS2 besides Rogue Galaxy. Devil Summoner PS2 looks good tho - basically SMT3, but SMT3 looks awesome. Main guy had a black outfit and a sword.

I guess it's less that the PS2 announcements were "weak" and more than Sony's PS2 showing at this conference was "weak." They have good software, they just chose to ignore it for the most part.

Well I was just listing more future future stuff. G3 is out in like 3 weeks :P

I wish. I suck at Japanese. :(
So it's not out for some of us :p

And I have to add Shadow Hearts III:FTNW to the list of great upcoming PS2 stuff, although it was not mentioned at the Sony PC...

Yeah seriously, the PS2 lineup looks very solid. I mean, the XBOX and GC are virtually dead at this point (outside of 1 or 2 titles, perhaps)...so it's hardly worth complaining.

PSP is what's disappointing to me. :( I wish they'd take it more seriously. It had such a strong start...

is it a dugngeon crawler?

Very cool trailer, this game won't be ready for a long time (at least not if they take their time like they did with RE4)
