Sony press conference announcements

portable TV? now that's something that can explode the PSP if done right.

how is the PSP gonna play it? via stream?

Maybe it will work much like their portable TV device. A basestation takes any composite signal and converts it to a wireless signal (and uses some digital compression) to have it play on a small wireless TV.

I somehow have to think that was the white wall mounted PSP i was viewing at E3 2004, showing the incubus video - and not a new release version. Were there any new press shots?

This was in zooL's post a somewhere back there

Alleged new white version

Both of the Rogue Galaxy pictures are from the CG cinemas, though the game itself looks quite nice (like a PS2 game, but quite nice).

When the presentation first started though, everyone thought it was a PS3 game and it looked like THAT. If they can pull that off in real-time (and given how powerful the PS3 is, that doesn't seem out of the question), Level 5 is going to be the most popular developer in the world next generation.

I had no idea there was still going to be a GT Mobile for the PSP. Learn something new every day.
Yeah. I forgot about it. I guess Sony is trying to space out the racing games if 3rd parties aren't.

Vid from the press conference shows a demonstration. It's a direct download through the new firmware web browser onto memory stick. They have a site (portable TV) that will host the downloads.

I'm hoping this bodes well for legitimate game/software downloads to memstick as well, sometime in the near future.

Didn't Square-Enix do a similar kind of cel-shading for the CG movies in Romancing Saga though? I remember them looking very cool (apart from the weird character design), like 2D drawings coming to life in a 3D world.

Ugh, that video kills me. Looks like it will be great with web pages formatted for it's size. The big question is how will it handle pages designed for 800x600 screens (ie, the rest of the internet). It could work well if they use the same kind of page-scaling technology Opera uses.

H.264 video looks fantastic, too.

There's still no way it's worth updating the firmware. But it's just enough to make me squirm.

Eh. Dunno. I have a laptop and cellphone which can view webpages.. Not really gonna carry around a PSP with what would most likely have an interface that is already done better for handheld browsing.

Personally, I'd much rather see Nintendo release a browser addon in a GBA cart or something. DS could do it very well (hopefully).

Yeah, I wasn't too excited about the web stuff when I watched that video.
Also, these videos are gonna take a while to download anything longer than a few minutes, and if the sites are busy, I don't want to know.

It sure looks a LOT faster than the Wipeout Pure web browser. And kudos to the mouse pointer operated via analog. I'm actually very excited about this.

Is it me or the Ps3 shown at the PS Meeting looks a bit flatter (in horizontal)?
I think you're right, actually.

It's amazing how the subtle improvements (chrome BRD face/lining, seemingly less convex) make it look so significantly sexier, at least imo. Not that I didn't like the look of it previously, but man does that look slick now.

Anyway, I am really psyched for the browser (and the rest of the new features). I hope we get it for the US at the same time of the Japanese release, or at least within a day. Obviously, if you have a laptop, this feature (as well as pretty much any multimedia feature) may not be as significant, but I don't have a laptop, and just the idea of checking out GAF or any of my other regular online stops before bed, or at a resteraunt, or whatever, is just awesome to me.

The primary value of the PSP browser will most likely be in its abilities as a built-in download center for the device, to grab PSP-specific videos, music and hopefully software and other downloadable content.

But I like how you seem to prefer portable web browsing on just about any device BUT a PSP. ;)

You know, the analog nub on the white PSP isn't going to hide dirt/grim/etc. very well, and the texture on it won't help matters any.

Damn, those new upgrades sound really nice, but I just can't give up on all the emulators and homebrew stuff I've accumulated over the last month.

Maybe he just prefers devices with intuitive (for browsing) interfaces? :P
Like a cell phone? ;) (Don't pretend it's a treo)

I agree that the DS should do better, but the resolution of the two systems might be the the most important factor, IMO. Even moreso than using a touch interface, although I do hate virtual keyboards.

What are the resolutions of the two systems?

How about a Blackberry? :)

Agreed, it's more give and take both ways.

PSP~ 480 x 272
DS~ 256 x 192 + 256 x 192

I may not buy one, but God does the PlayStation 3 look good in this photo. I'm even getting used to this synergy logo.

DS's horizontal resolution is really small, and that's what's most important for web pages rendering. Even 480 is not that great, but I think you can get good results by just scaling everything down 2x while keeping text scaled down to a bit smaller degree.

DS is just not a good option for web page displaying, IMO. Anyone concerned with input interface should just get a PDA for handhled web browsing. Any Pocket PC, even those with 320x240 res, will do a better job than DS.

If only they decided to go with black or white model as standard instead of silver one. They looked so damn good in real life, and silver one just wasn't as good looking. Sigh... Well, I guess they'll release them eventually.

Obviously I was referring to Zeo's original reference to a cellphone, but you have your fun.
Didn't seem obvious to me given my reply (Blackberry) was to SCB (Treo) and not Zeo (cellphone).

It's okay though, we're both back door men. ;)

So...

Microsoft's showing is Monday (Sunday night for most of us)

and Squares is when?

And when't the gaming convention.

TGS?

(Yes, I'm just so damn lazy that I'm asking for information that I could find myself, but if anybody knows of the top of their heads :D )

For someone who responded to something I was saying to someone else in the first place, I'd hope you'd be able to keep better track.

Don't get your hopes up - DCharlie's track record with the insider information has been pretty spotty.

This is true. I guess Sony will have to pull an Apple too. But there's still no firm information on launch color schemes and proportions of PS3s made in each color, is there? But it isn't the biggest problem to me; it's the use of glossy plastic, which annoys me to no end when used in other devices, be they PSPs or iPods. I hope Sony rethinks this part of the PS3.

Hey I've been wondering...People were talking about blank UMDs being announced at Sony's E3 2005 press conference. Was that news real or fake? What's the deal?

I dunno, the order seemed rather clear. I'd responded to SCB and you responded to me. Why bring up that Blackberries are cellphones if not for SCB's original distinction between regular cells and Palm/PPC hybrids?

Well, he got Ridge Racer right. Hear Microsoft's the source for both rumors. ;)

You brought it up, I just pointed out that if Zeo had meant blackberry, he probably would have said that instead of "cellphone".

I'm rooting for him - I hope he's on the road to recovery ;)
