Sony to double down on Marathon

"Do we make Bungie double down on the game that has had good success in the past, or do we have them double down on the incredibly niche game with a divisive art style?"

This company is retarded lol.

They are doubling down on a game by a legendary studio with great reviews and high engagement, and was just too hardcore for casuals. Easy to fix. Duh.

They're obviously doing both.

Abandoning Marathon would be stupid. Both because it's an expensive game, and because - if you spend any time in the game - you'll realize that it has a lot of potential. And Bungie seems to be actively listening to and apply fixes based on feedback.

Only question is if they have the stomach to do the rework it needs to find a wider audience.

What sony should do:

Kick down door at bungie HQ

"Oi numbnuts, stop with this tacked on mp mode that very few people care about, make us a halo-esque fps campaign, co-op and the whole shebang"

Spits on the floor, farts and walks out.

What sony probably did:

Softly walked in, with a bouquet of flowers.

"Please mr dev man/woman/they/zer/xem, could we pretty please get some pride flag skins and possibly replace more male characters with trans looking female characters, and please dont forget to go on blue sky between your 10 minutes of work and blame gamers, thank you"

Dave when he learns Bungie took almost all their good resources off their successful game to slap them on a game in an incredibly niche genre and effectively let their successful game suffocate to death:

I have no issue with this. I hate that Sony put their single-player developers on GAAS games. That was and is a huge mistake.

But, this is Bungie. It is what Bungie does. Telling them to abandon their GAAS game at the first sign of trouble is as dumb as having Naughty Dog making an online multiplayer GAAS over another game like Uncharted or The Last of Us.

Metacritic 82 on journoscum reviews.
5.8 on user reviews.

Players don't like it much.
Yeah because meta user scores where everyone and their mother can rate a game without owning it is so important. Its not like there are dumb fucks who go there and downvote a game they never played because they have a weird hateboner towards it. Nothing we ever seen on this forum either right?

This is obviously corporate speak. Most likely the bulk of the dev team has already moved to the next project and a small team is tasked to maintain Marathon.

Don't forget: "....Only if you have some free time and you don't feel too much pressure of course..."

Yep, they should have gone with the dumbledore said calmly movie version but they went with the book version instead :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I'm not so sure.

It's effectively Sony admitting that Bungie has been demoted as an asset and expectations relegated accordingly.

Support for Marathon will continue.

Support for their next idea will not.

They are lying about player retention. Marathon is losing thousands of players each week and hardly anyone buys it.
There is hard evidence for this in steam charts, psnprofiles.com popularity and psn sales popularity.

The same goes with the bribed media that were told to hold their reviews till Bungie deemed it convenient.

Using MC as a criteria for the viability of Marathon is retarded. Sales and player engagement are the only valid metrics.

Just give 'store credit' to the users who bought it and make it F2P. No. of users will easily cross 6 figures and it will start having +ve momentum. What are they waiting for? milking users on upfront fee when other better or more popular F2P games are available in similar genre?

The game is released. You don't need the entire team to continue to maintain Marathon. Most of the dev team should be in pre-production on the next game.

"Support" can mean many things, including just leaving the servers on so people who want to play it can.

I can't think of one good thing that came from this acquisition. Destiny 2 collapsed almost immediately after purchase. Sony had to take over because they couldn't hit their metrics. Marathon needed delays to get out the door, in part because of plagiarism. And it flopped immediately after release. So yea I'm not surprised if Sony is done with Bungie as a major revenue and growth driver. They just clearly and objectively are not that.

They would recoup the cost by making bunch of single player FPS but no it has to be a f**king service.
They'll never recoup the cost, let alone the opportunity cost of what they could have spent that money on. I'm also not even sure if Bungie can make such a game. Agree they should've tried.
