It's not that they've got some bad games on their resume, it's that they don't have any really great ones either. The highest rated one they have to their name is Killzone 2, which is an ok game, but not great. If this is their high watermark after a decade of development, that's a pretty mediocre studio. Killzone shadowfall is outright bad, the combination of bad story, unpolished gameplay and launch title technical issues (literally had my save rendered useless on level 8 of 10 because of a gamebreaking bug). They have a consistent track record of average shooters that happen to have beautiful graphics.
to me ....
MS = high production, money, quality and surety ...... resulting in consistent, high quality games but with a less diverse library
SONY= varying levels of production and capital, creativity and risk ..... resulting in many games, hit or miss, with greater diversity (i.e. i mean the indie push alone is evidence of this)
i definitely prefer sonys output but can see how MS's approach is way better for people who know what they want
NINTENDO = can have the best qualities of MS and SONY
Naturally, this is fact, right?
Mercenary was on the Vita and came out last year, you're thinking of Liberation.
I haven't played Shadow Fall yet but Killzone 3 a turd? Come the fuck on. I fail to see why I should "just stop" if I just happened to come back with a metacritic score (which I wasn't going to anyway) but it's totally okay for you to throw your opinion around as if it's fact.
The defence of Guerrilla's output is that their games sell pretty well and that's why they continue to expand and make more. Forza sells similar numbers, does it need a defence?
We still haven't seen what their second team can do yet. The Killzone 2 team was split in two, with one working on Killzone 3 and later, Shadow Fall, while the other has been working on their RPG ever since.
Naturally, this is fact, right?
Make your case then.
Were you expecting a thread about comparing the subjective quality of first party outputs to be based on facts?
Make a case for something that is entirely subjective? Here's a tip: no one's opinion on a game or studio is fact, and shouldn't be presented as such.
There's no case to make.
I personally like SF and agree KZ3 was a turd. I felt they brought back what made KZ2 so amazing and unique to a extent. So far it's my favorite shooter of the new genYes, from the perspective of it being Sony's flagship FPS, Killzone 3 is a turd that turned a lot of people off the series. They didn't maintain or build on the quality of Killzone 2, the quality dropped. The quality dropped again with KZ:SF. GG managed to tarnish their own franchise. The only good thing is that they now have a decent writer so hopefully their next game won't be the kind of disappointing tripe KZ3 and SF were.

Project Spark too.
Where is No Man's Sky?

I feel the same way, their games have always had something different about them that you don't get in other FPS. KZ3 seemed to be too much of an attempt to pull in the same direction as everyone else and diluted what makes Killzone great.

Yea, I disagree. Game was obviously rushed but for a launch game I was impressed by both the SP and multi. If it had another 6 months to a year it could have been near KZ2 levels of greatness.Well it seems the SP has few redeeming qualities even if the MP was more like KZ2. The game failed to have any impact whatsoever. Sony should have a flagship FPS that people look forward to and GG really dropped the ball. Any new entry is going to be treated with a healthy skepticism.
How is it an irrefutable bomb? You have no idea about its overall sales, its revenue, and the overall profit of the project. It's a project which had a generally quick turn around whilst another group focused on the new IP, which ultimately suffered an ending no one wanted. From God of War 3, to the God of War Collections, to Ascension, all of those projects were extremely successful. Your argument is that you're upset God of War: Ascension exists, because it didn't manage to do as well as God of War 3 which is one of the most successful action titles ever made (and maybe you just really don't like Ascension).
And if you're dissatisifed with Ascension, what did you want in place of it for 2013? Because you weren't going to get another new IP and you sure as hell weren't getting God of War 4 because there are going to be some big changes with that franchise. Santa Monica focused on producing a new IP since 2010, and at the same time, delivered another project which was a financial success in Ascension. Saying that was a terrible move just makes you clueless. How is this a bad move? This is a business at the end of the day, and Ascension did well both critically and commercially for SCE, even if it didn't reach the heights of God of War 3. Is Ascension going to hurt the next big "God of War" title? No, it's going to have no impact whatsoever.
Sony is more than satisfied with Beyond sales. Heavy Rain cost something like 30-33 million euros all in if I remember right. That was costs of production, marketing, distribution etc. Beyond is not much more than that. It has been very profitable. So again, please cut the crap and stop making assumptions. There is a reason why the partnership between QD and SCE continues to thrive, and even develop further.
With GT6, PD isn't going to release a fully fledged Gran Turismo title a year into PS4's launch unfortunately. It would be amazing, yes, but it's quite unrealistic. The ones that were supposed to make it for this year, couldn't make it, and their games/projects aren't as important as Gran Turismo. This is Sony's biggest franchise. We release Gran Turismo 6, and it may not sell 10 million, but it's going to sell millions and make a hell of a lot of money. We then continue and deliver full next generation title a couple years later, mostly on schedule. Alternatively, let's not release GT6 and wait a few years anyway. Great, so what now? How does this make sense for SCE? What did we gain? Nothing at all. We actually lose out. Fantastic outcome.
And if you're going to hold Shu partly responsible for TLG, then in the same manner, give part of the credit for every single title that is produced and released. That includes Naughty Dogs projects, because he's just as much "partly" responsible for those as he is for TLG. The chain of command doesn't work in the way you to seem to think it does. TLG is under Japan Studio and there is a reason why these studios have their own heads in place. There are over a dozen studios at Sony, and something like 30-40 projects in development. All of these studios have people directly in charge who manage them, who are the ones who report back to Yoshida. And what's a better judgment call? Do you want the project abandoned? Do you want them to deliver a mediocre game? Or is it better that they've been given more time, and people will ultimately get what they deserve on the PS4? You're a consumer. Why the hell does this matter to you? What stake do you have in SCE's financial success with TLG exactly? Their survival isn't dependant on this one project. In that respect, Yoshida made the best decision possible for fans, because at least you'll get to play it.
Of course not, but I would prefer to see such a topic discussed in a way other than statements being presented as fact.
Opinions are fine but when you start making statements like you have, then yeah, you really should be backed up by some facts. Otherwise it's just a shitfest of baseless statements being thrown around.
My argument is that GoW Ascension bombed because it sold only half of GoW 3, that has to be dissappointing. GoW 3 was the most successfull of the franchise but the previous console titles have been +4m sellers as well. How much did Ascension sell compared with that and how much profit did it make? Did it even outsell the PSP titles? Critically, yes it's at an 80 on aggregate sites, but I didn't argue it, though it's the lowest scoring GoW, it's also the least liked GoW going by impressions.
I'm not talking about GT on PS4, I'm talking about the release date of GT6. Releasing it a week after PS4 comes out in Europe was a mistake, in the UK its sales was 1/5th of GT5. How was it not a strategic mistake? Selling only 1/5th of the previous game is awful, it's an abnormal performance for this series. I'm a big GT fan but I didn't have any desire for GT6 right after I got my shiny PS4, at that moment we still thought DC was coming soon in Q1, waited a few weeks on a sale after the next gen hype wore off actually. Why not develop GT6 fully as a PS4 title? GT3 came out the next year PS2 launched and its still the biggest seller of the franchise.
TLG was at least in development since 2007 when it got leaked as Project Trico, 2 years later it was announced, the game has been in development hell for so long. I'm not saying he should've canned the project, he should've intervened earlier, rather than let the project continue as is and getting in even more problems. If they scaled back on the ambitions, we would've had TLG a few years ago, and we would now be speculating what's next to come and which TGS they will announce their PS4 game. They once said Team ICO is their Olympic team delivering a game every 4 years, looks like they'll be missing 2 olympics.
You're telling me that Beyond was a success, that it didn't cost much more to make than Heavy Rain even though it is a way more ambitious game. It has Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, two of the biggest names in the movie industry. You're telling me to take all of your claims at face value, I know that you're apparently affiliated with Sony, but what's your role, are you in a position to know the sales goals of first and second party studios?
Sony is lacking hard in the fighting game genre, and the first party fighters of MS/Ninty seem to do well. What can they do to fix this?

What they can do? Not sure, but i agree. I would love to see a First Party Fighter from Sony, or even Bloody Roar or an other old IP making a comeback. At least Xrd is coming.
Make Tekken exclusive again.
Buy SNK.
Making a tradition 1st party fighting game seems pointless considering they get exclusives from Japan. BBCP moved to PS3 only, GG Xrd is Sony exclusive, Under Night In-Birth, etc are PS3 exclusive.
I'd like to see a non-tradition fighting game from them though. Something similar to Urban Reigns, Bushido Blade, or Tom & Jerry: War of the Whiskers (overlooked & under-rated game).
Get the team behind Ascension's multiplayer at SSM to make a new Power Stone-ish IP.

I know I may be in the minority. But Sony have Bloodborne and The Order releasing at February next year. I think Sony should delay The Order again, refine the gameplay as well as add a decent multiplayer mode similar to Gears. Perhaps delay the game for a September release (2 months before Uncharted 4). Killzone, Knack, Drive Club have not been doing as well critically, and I reckon The Order will have the same issues. They could easily add Beyond port and Tearaway for first half of 2015 to go along with Bloodborne. Also it helps 3rd party line up is quite strong for early 2015.

I think it's Bloodborne that should be delayed. The cycle hasn't been that long, and that team have a history of shipping before their games are really as technically competent as it should be. The Order has had a very long time to get into shape, there's no reason to think a few more months is going to help them notably.

Summer '12 it started. It'll be two and a half years, which given it's a new generation and a new IP, and they had that long for Dark Souls, which despite being phenomenal as a whole, would have greatly benefited from a few more months, I think another few months would probably be of greater value to From than RaD.How long has the Game been in development? I think Sony Japans help is important for the Game, they help out with Tech right?
Sony has more 1st party studios but where are all the 1st party games for Q3/Q4 2014? It is a barren wasteland...

Still seems weak from a retail release perspective but as I said, it doesn't matter because its selling so well... just means they can afford to delay The Order to give it more time and other titles if necessary to get them right
That's not to defend Sony's output by the way, it's appalling.

Not if ubisoft have anyhing to do with it lolespecially for third party games.
I think next year is already looking like a big improvement for them, Tearaway, essentially no one played anyway, so I think that'll be very well received. Uncharted 4 is sure to be a very high quality title, ND are on fire after TLoU, and obviously, Bloodborne being the best game ever wouldn't be much of a surprise. The Sony cycle.
I remember how the strong 2011 was followed by what was probably Sony's shittiest year in a long, long time (2012 where practically everything not Journey bombed, and the biggest game of the year was PS All Star), which the lead to 2013 ( strong year overall ) and now the currently less appealing 2014.

I've never liked R&C, but that remake is bound to be a liked by many.
