Sony's E3 2014 - What are we all expecting?

It's been quite a while since we've last heard of major project updates from the following studios that we've heard rumblings of them being involved in Sony first-party games:

- Tarsier
- Sumo Digital
- Giant Sparrow
- Supermassive Games
- Zindangi Games

In regards to Sony-first party:

Sony San Diego's Modnation team seems to have been brewing something since Road Trip, that's rumoured to be F2P based off job listings looking for people with F2P experience. It's been 2 years since then, I think it'd be a good time to unveil their next project.

Guerilla Game's new IP is going to hit 3 years of development soon. Given that new IP ideally needs longer lead-time from announcement to release, sometime this year, even for a simple unveiling seems realistic.

Sucker Punch had previously mentioned their SS DLC would be in the veins of 'Festival of Blood.' I can see that being its own unveiling as well.

Who the hell knows with Media Molecule. I do hope Rex Crowle gets to continue making games though, Tearaway was awesome.

I wish we could get a clearer picture of the cycle of Sony's first-party teams soon. SSM and Quantic Dream, for one, is unlikely to make an announcement given that they released a game just last year. ND and GG are special cases of having 2 teams with titles being cooked in the pipeline for a while, but even then we still don't know how they'll manage their schedules team-to-team. Will Steven der Heide/Neil's Druckmanns'ss next game come in 4 years time, or 3 years?

Realistically, the next cycle of announcements should be Bend, London, Media Molecule and Guerilla. I definitely hope that's the case.

I expect the bolded (if ready) will be shown at Gamescom except Giant Sparrow, they'd seem more befitting of an E3 reveal as Sony would probably use them as their main piece when showcasing indie/indie-spirited games.

Great guesses, indeed Tarsier is working on something new.

Any guesses as to when Sony will confirm their media briefing? I want to know, whether I should book the day off (i.e, if it starts early)

Id like to see some gameplay of shadow of the beast. There hadnt brrn much info on this title since its reveal.I wonder if they will save it for gamescom.

The guys making it are literally like 5 minutes drive from me. Even closer than Guildford.

Anyways, what I mean to say is that for a small setup like that, it's kinda expensive to go to E3 and get any worthwhile coverage. GamesCOM is probably a better bet for them, and better value too.

Guess it does make more sense for it to be at gamescom. I am really interested in this title. Being that u are so close to them, you wouldnt happen to knoew or have bumped into to any of these guys before?

You'll probably want to book that Tuesday off. No doubt Sony's will be a late (early?) one for us folks in the EU.

Edit: Well there you go I guess :D

We still don't a time or place for this right?
WHAT IF SONY ISN'T EVEN DOING ONE THIS YEAR?
No seriously. Don't they usually have it announced at least a month before hand? Why's it taking so long this time?

I would like to see some MMO's from SOE shown at E3. Planetside, Everquest Next, and H1Z1.

Yeah, I'm not really big on MMO's but they really should start contributing.

It looks like at least the Planetside 2 thread seems to indicate it will be there and be playable at the booth.

"Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that they will be showcasing Planetside 2 on Playstation 4 at E3 2014 and added that it will be available in playable form as well."

New Jet Moto please.

Andy Gavin followed me on twitter so that pretty much confirms a new Crash Bandicoot.

Im happy with Uncharted, Project Beast, The Order, Rime, more Destiny and Driveclub. Anything else is a bonus. Show a new GOW or TLG or AGENT, Crash or GG's new IP and I will shit my pants with Joy.

I do live right in commuter zone, so tons of people who work for SCEE in London, live around here. I'm continually amazed by how many there are. I could list on and on.

While I've spoken to Matt who owns Heavy Spectrum (and this is kind of the only inside information I've ever had), I did speak to him before they revealed Shadow of the Beast, as I was told accidentally they had received PS4 dev-kits. Really nice guy, offered to give me a hand with my CV and some career advice.

Sounds like good people. Im from the states but I believe cv is like a resume? Do u know what games Matt has eorked on in the past?

Might have already been said, I haven't scanned this whole topic:

PS+ boost for PS4 via two full retail games being added for the year (available for download NOW!). Obviously Knack, my second guess is Injustice. Just Dance and NFS are other third party options.

Indie Game mega blitz. They start with a repeat of last years group of indie developers on stage... but then pull back to include another 100 people. Obviously too demanding to get everyone at the location... but they could fake a bunch of "live-cam" type shots and play them on the big screen. Then fade out the developer shots and replace them with single screens of their games.

Street Fighter confirmation AND the ability to use PS3 fightsticks enabled prior to its release.

Some big firmware updates with concrete dates (suspend/resume, Youtube integration near the top of the list).

PS Now Beta expanding to include all PS+ members with a selection of games on PS3 and PS4.

  • Announcement that all PS4 consoles will come bundled with 2 digital games
  • Project Morpheus details
  • PS+ rewards for long time suscribers (eg. 2 permanent free game after 2 years concurrent sub)
  • The Order 1886 gameplay, stage demonstration, September 2014 release
  • Infamous Second Son DLC announced, additional powers and new story
  • Drive Club gameplay trailer
  • Gravity Rush 2 gameplay
  • Indie game montage similar to E3 2013
  • GT7 prologue reveal, 1080p/60fps and takes advantage of new tech, Q1 2014 release
  • Guerrilla Games new RPG IP reveal, gameplay and general 2015 release date, top-notch visuals
  • Media Molecule new IP revealed, compatible with DS4, Move and Project Morpheus, all about player creation
  • Uncharted PS4 (won't be numbered as 4) full reveal, November 2014 release date (I'm probably wrong here)
  • Sony Bend new IP reveal, many will dub it as Uncharted in the city
  • ''The Division'' stage demo
  • Project Beast reveal, collaboration of Japan studios and From Software, PS4 exclusive with 2015 release date
  • The Last Guardian PS4 re-reveal with stage demo, Q2 2015 release date

I know there's a lot speaking against it... but I could still see Sony announcing a slight pricecut.

PS4: $379

Still cheaper, still more powerfull.

Doubt it. A free game is more likely. They can add Knack, Fifa, Black Flag or Killzone for peanuts nowadays.

They won't cut the price unless it's at least a $50 change. However I do possibly see them bundling in one of their upcoming AAA games at the standard $399 price.

Oh my....I'm just going to pretend this all real.

Not expecting much this year. I don't know if they can show Uncharted 4 when The Order needs all the spotlight. Besides, that game is seemingly rebooted, so I'm not very hopeful of seeing it this year. I'm hoping The Order blows us away though. Really want that game to be great and I have faith in Ready at Dawn. One thing that would blow me away is Project Beast, which would make a lot of people happy if we see a trailer of it. I'm salivating at the mere prospect! Entwined and Kill Strain will probably get a trailer but I don't even want to bother speculating what they are. No doubt we'll get a TLOU Remaster trailer + release date announcement. Maybe even Beyond: Two Souls for PS4 and maaaaaaybe GT6 for PS4 too. I don't even want to mention GoW: Ascension. :(

Third party wise, I'm expecting a huge focus on Destiny as Sony and Activision are going to market the hell out of that game. Also expecting the usual Assassin's Creed demo on stage and I'm throwing out a wild guess that AC4 will be free for PS+ as a promotion leading up to Unity's release. Square-Enix would be silly to not have a piece of the conference pie themselves either. They'd be wise to promote KH2.5 HD after a new KH3 trailer like they did last year with 1.5 HD.

Indies should be on stage again and hopefully one of them is Hello Games. No Man's Sky is a dream game of mine and would love to see more of it. Even better would be seeing a Morpheus demo but that'd depend on VR being talked about at the conference at all.

And of course, we'll get some Gaikai/PSNow announcements/details as they said it'd be available this summer in the US. Hopefully pricing is good with a decent sized library at launch.

Overall, I think it'll be a decent conference but nothing megatonic. Probably enough to keep them strong going into Gamescom and TGS.

You have very measured expectations. I actually agree with most of it. I do think that we will see Uncharted. I believe that ND will want to show that the title is still on track and actually much further along than most people believe. Probably one or two IP will be shown off in addition to the ones we already know about. I do not think Driveclub will get much time if any at all other than an E3 trailer and hands-on time on the floor. I believe Beast Souls and an IP from SCEE is a given. I hope to see much much more of The Order. I think it may steal the show once more of it is revealed.

I get the feeling that Sony's Fall 2014 will not be nearly as impressive as Microsoft's. They will have games like The Order (hopefully), DriveClub, and The Last of Us remastered, but they will certainly be pushing the 3rd party at their press conference. I'd expect demos of Destiny (while touting it's extra content), Batman: Arkham Knight, Assassin's Creed: Unity, The Crew, and probably some mega-ton game 3rd party game that currently isn't announced like Fallout 4 (If that was scheduled for release this year, I'd fucking cry).

In terms of their exclusives, we'll definitely see live demos of The Order, DriveClub, and maybe a short demo of Uncharted PS4. From their, expect trailers for things like God of War 4 and whatever else Sony Santa Monica is working on, Guerrila Games' new non-shooter game, and probably a few surprise games.

Will the Last Guardian show? Ehhhhhh probably not, but I'd get hyped if it did.

edit: Oh, and they'll be doing a big showcase of Indies, Project Morpheus, and PlayStation Now. Maybe a Vita game or two lol.

Presentation:
Going by their past practices, Sony usually keeps a measured tempo when it comes to presentations. They have a solid E3, but keep announcements for Gamescom, with 1 or 2 relevant titles for the Japanese audience for TGS. I don't think they'll stray far from that as they like to always keep some bit of news on the gaming website headlines throughout the year. Knowing that companies tend to replicate anything they found success with, I think Sony's E3 conference with closely resemble last year's. Obviously games will change, but the general format will be the same. Trade out last year's informative bits on DRM, PSNow, Pricing, etc with PSNow Details, Bundles, Morpheus partnerships. There was a good response to the indie showcase, so I expect that to return.

Specifics:
  • DriveClub - IF they show it, its a quick trailer and a reminder of the release
  • The Order 1886 - gameplay demo. The physics and special guns will come into play this time. I expect people's reaction will be improved after this showing.
  • UnCharted - Its not numbered. I expect a trailer with gameplay snippets
  • TLOU Remastered - a trailer to show the improvements and a release date
  • TLG Re-reveal - I don't understand why people think this game isn't in development when Sony has stated it is. Why would they need to lie about it? It exists lol. Granted I could be wrong about it showing up here, but if not here Gamescom. We will see it this year.
  • Destiny - they're banking alot on this; it will no doubt show up again. More vehicles, more multiplayer/coop demos
  • 2 New 1st party IP - its a toss up here between Bend/GG/MM. My guess is GG and MM. GG because there have been rumblings and I think they can serve as a graphical showpiece. MM because we've seen a snippet of their work already, so I'm thinking they're in a position to show a little more.
  • Project Beast aka Demon's Souls 2 - its apparently outed anyway.
  • Indies - brand new, handpicked indies to showcase
  • 3rd party support - who cares, cause we all share in multiplatform titles anyway. I just hope whatever it is looks interesting and that new IP is sprinkled in.

I look at E3 in its totality. I enjoy watching all the conferences. There's something for everyone at each conference. MS's conference will have 3rd party support wherein Sony folks can look in and see games they're getting too, and vice versa. All of that stuff is a wash. Your presentation may have had a higher point because you had Batman Arkham Knight versus Kane and Lynch, but the big picture equals out the same...both camps got Arkham Knight and Kane & Lynch. Same for indie titles. Sony has a plethora of those, but I anticipate most of them will end up on the Xbox at some point in the near future. I think people get too focused on the presentation rather than the content. For this reason, I think perception-wise, MS will 'win' this E3. It appears as though they'll be repeating what they did last year...which is put everything into E3 since its the biggest show, and show things way out into the distance. I should add, that as far as presentation; that approach seems to be what gamers say they want. Sony's format will not be the same and thusly won't likely match up title for title. That's not to say that they won't have the content (its common knowledge that they do), but they aren't likely to reveal as much of it. It'll be spread out over E3 and Gamescom.
