Sony's E3 2014 - What are we all expecting?

If Sony are reading this thread and are looking for feedback, from someone who has had every Sony console and followed everyone of their previous E3's, for whatever that is worth, here is my input.

- Don't spend time on stage with third party demos that have featured already in previous conferences that very day! Last year we had Assassins Creed and Watch_Dogs on stage when they had already been shown off during UBI's conference. Showcase third party titles we haven't seen much of (e.g Batman AK).

- Keep Vita talk to a minimum.

- Do not talk about Morpheus VR or keep it brief and then show it next year when it's closer to launch.

- Apps and features like PSNOW are not fun subjects for a press conference, keep it to a minimum. Also sales charts are a no.

- Keep the pace up! Often Sony has a poorly judged pace to their shows with stage demos / talk that kills the mood. (eg. Move / Wonderbook / UBI demos we've seen). Just show game after game. That's what people want.

- And now a wish list from me. I'd really like an update on The Last Guardian. Even just a trailer to see how the game looks. New 1st party titles from Guerrilla, Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Bend and Media Molecule. Updates on games like Rime that were announced almost a year ago and then went dark. Finally a few Japanese titles as E3 shouldn't just cater for western studios. The FFXV reveal last year was fantastic!

Thanks!

Yes, but do they have titles ready for it?

doing "experiences" won't cut it at a conference. Show it when you actually have titles to support it?

"Experiences " will be what set VR apart from drab normal gaming. They'll have a demo, hopefully outline their plans and have a bunch of show floor units that will blow people minds and get the gaming and main stream press talking.

Even if YOU have no interest in VR. To think that Sony won't have a PM segment of their show is just down right gullible.

I'd be very surprised if Morpheus wasn't in the conference somewhere, it's something that differentiates them from MS and gives people a reason to be excited about what the future has in store for PS4 owners.

Live demo can already be pretty boring
Add VR on top of that
Oh boy
Itll be like showing 3D at a conference but worse

Don't wanna wonderbook that

Like it or not, third party games matter and will be present. And you're kidding yourselves if you think MS won't have third party stuff either.

All of this. I agree. Just show us PS4 games. I don't mind 3rd party games demo. On the other hand, not interested to know anything beside games. Focus on what WWS have been doing and show us mind-blowing games.

Get bent Vita hater! :p

Vita talk is terrible for a press conference. With specific Vita events now like the live streams in Japan and press releases for new games every few months becoming common place there is little need to take up precious time on stage at E3.

The Vita is decent and has it's place, just not on an E3 stage. Especially during the PS4's first year on market. It's a dying system.

Also, don't start the show with an announcer but with a kickass gameplay demo.

Absolutely this. It's the one thing I love about the MS conference. Opening with a demo for Uncharted or The Order would be brilliant!

I actually agree with ya but its not in as terrible shape as perceived.

I think Sony should give it a small portion of the show for sure

Noone is saying there shouldn't be multi-games at all. Just not as dominant as last year. (Multiple) 10+ minutes live-demos of games that we know about and probably were shown already on other conferences or in trailers is just not fun at all.

Sony have so many first and second party developers their output could potentially be unmatched. Unfortunately, the way they conduct their conferences and their -justified- tendency to have a strong presence at Gamescom will condemn them to play second to MS this year at E3.

Crazy talk.

You really want Sony Not to talk about a active and supported Playstation platform?

oh here's a wish, if they are to have a Ubi demo online I hope it's Beyond good and Evil 2!

Still want that game to happen so much.

Yeah, I'd imagine if it exists it's probably multiplatform, but in my opinion if it does exist Sony should/has to do whatever it takes to be the ones who get to show BG&E2 first and not let Microsoft do it like in that obviously fake list (even though by the time it were to come out it'd almost definitely be like MGSV and do the vast majority of it's sales on PS4 anyway). I think there's a lot of pent-up hype for that game especially since it's even more unique now than ever with how uncommon those types of games have become and how they are still quite popular with PS fans.

Well stated man!

Very cogent and succinct. I totally agree. You hit the nail on the head for a very glorious E3. I just dread that Sony won't follow this sound advice. Sony needs to hire gamers to let them plan their E3 conference. The people on here fundamentally grasp what entices their audience better than their own CEOs do.

Crazy talk.

You really want Sony Not to talk about a active and supported Playstation platform?

No they should and will talk about it. I said in my original post - keep it to a minimum. It wastes everyone's time and any Vita announcements (which I imagine will be fairly small) can be made via press releases throughout the week of E3. It's a pace killer as hardly anyone cares (sad but true).

Noone is saying there shouldn't be multi-games at all. Just not as dominant as last year. (Multiple) 10+ minutes live-demos of games that we know about and probably were shown already on other conferences or in trailers is just not fun at all.

Sony would immensly benefit from associating games like Destiny, Assassins Creed and the next Batman with their plateform. Having on-stage demos and exclsuive content on top of hosting the superior version will make them move consoles (bundles would be a killer move). Sony also needs to maintain close ties with such powerful partners...Who knows, with the way things are going, they could snatch some UBI exclusive down the line.

This is what I don't want to see:
No more AssCreed stage demos. Too played out already every year.
No sports game demos - same shit every year.
No motion control demos.
Don't even talk about VR, it's not ready yet.
Poor pacing - fix this shit. SCEJ is probably the only ones who do it right.

I guess that the world premiere of Assassin's Creed Unity during Sony's conference is a given and considering that it will be the first truly next gen Asassin's Creed (and the teaser released a few weeks ago looked amazing) this time it might be well worth it.
On the contrary it's boring to think that probably they have to give space again to Destiny for marketing reasons.
For the rest I fully agree, things like sports and motion controls have to be played first hand to make an impact, it's useless to waste time on those during the conference.
VR isn't ready and again it's something that should be tried on the showfloor.
Pacing can be automatically fixed giving the right importance to the right things....unlike Wonderbook or MAG :D

With this being said the safe bets of the Sony conference will be:
1)Naughty Dog with Uncharted 4 gameplay and TLOU trailer with release date
2)The Order gameplay
3)Driveclub might be showed just with a new trailer, with a new updated playable demo on the showfloor.
4)Playstation Now launch details in the US market
5)A few demos from third parties game, AC:Unity, maybe Destiny.

Considering the show will last 2 hours, there's a lot of room for new games and announcements left :P

Games for PS4 has to be The ABSOLUTE focus.

Forget Morpheus here. You've just sold 7million PS4s on pretty much your solid game focus talk and wise communication strategy.

As a PS4 owner though what do I currently see. I see MS getting their shit together with a sense of purpose, them regularly getting firmware updates rolling out and a guarantee they aren't going to rest on their laurels.

Sony: You've got the markets attention and image as a leader right now. The lead is yours to squander. A VR headset at this stage will just be seen as a gimmick add on to Joe Public outside E3 - I don't care how impressive it is to those experiencing demos of it 7,000 miles away. I've just bought a PS4. Cater for me.

I guess it is given that there will be AC:U demo. Shinobi hinted two demos, Single player and Co-Op (if true) one of two will definitely appear on Sony Conference.

I also said they can (and have to) do this. Just not such big live demos (for all of these games). The games won't be associated more to their platform just because they do a 15 minute presentation instead of a 5 minute one.
It's like others said, the pacing of their conference is terrible most of the time.

Personally, I'm very excited about VR, but it's difficult to make a presentation on a technology that the audience at home can't experience for themselves.

The best they can do is announce a AAA game for Morpheus. Something that makes sense for VR and still has depth and ambition. A space sim comes to mind, since VR makes the most sense for games where the player is seated and piloting something. But perhaps they'll just push EVE: Valkyrie.

Totally. I do love that Sony seem to be very active with the community and the fact they are open to feedback from the core user base is welcomed. It's nice when a company involves it's fan base. But yeah Microsoft are very much trying to win back gamers right now and it's very evident, Sony need to keep the momentum up by doing the same.

Personally, I'm very excited about VR, but it's difficult to make a presentation on a technology that the audience at home can't experience for themselves.

Don't get me wrong, the tech seems pretty cool (although a bit of a gimmick to me, just like 3D and motion control) and the 'Deep Sea' demo was impressive. I just think this E3, when VR is likely 18 months out at least, is not the place or time to make a big deal out of it. Maybe next year when they have a games line up, price point and date.

I've been seeing a lot of people complaining about long on-stage demos of games we've already seen. Although I agree, complaining about this may be fruitless. I'm no expert, but Sony may have entered into agreements with some publishers, in exchange for some exclusive content, etc, Sony will demo their game for a certain amount of time at their E3 conference. You want that exclusive content? That's what you have to put up with in exchange. Again, I am only guessing here, but Sony may not have 100% control over how long those demos are due to what they have already promised publishers in the past.

The thing is - how much is exclusive content actually worth? Who actually cares if they get 2 extra copy-paste missions or 5 alternate character costumes, or 2 weeks lead on a map-pack? It always strikes me as a huge waste of money for Sony and Microsoft and outside of marketing deals for commercials I doubt these 'exclusives' actually add up to that many extra sales.

3rd party stuff is unavoidable, have to keep that relationship close.
Agree on everything else. PS now/ Morpheus just demo on the show floor, they are pretty hard to sell on stage anyway.
Also keep the live demo short, don't drag it like COD demo in 2012.

No they should and will talk about it. I said in my original post - keep it to a minimum. It wastes everyone's time and any Vita announcements (which I imagine will be fairly small) can be made via press releases throughout the week of E3. It's a pace killer as hardly anyone cares (sad but true).

This is just so dumb. I'm sorry. This isn't some third party conference. Ideally sony would and should make some effort towards one of their own systems at one of the biggest events of the year. Tho I highly doubt they will give a shit cuz SCEA gonna SCEA.

And you are making way too many blanket statements. Waste of 'everyone's time? 'Hardly anyone' cares? Maybe they should do something to make more people care then. If they actually show some good gaming material for the system why would anyone who actually enjoys gaming go 'wow what a waste of my time'?

But again I repeat, I expect them to act like it doesn't exist. And that is part of the reason why the system is struggling so much, especially in the NA.

As excited as I am for Destiny, another 10 minute plus demo would be a bit of a drag. I'd rather a crazy new trailer and beta details. Demoing a game that was already featured heavily last year and we just got a lot of gameplay from seems like it would be counterproductive.

3rd party stuff is unavoidable, have to keep that relationship close.

I also find it amusing that some people think Sony would have enough first party games ready to be demo-ed and that would fit the E3 format.
I for one welcome the diversity that 3rd party bring both at MS and Sony press confs.

I expect another stage demo. I mean, the game is out in a few months and is going to be huuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Sony needs to associate themselves with the game as much as possible.

A big trailer, early beta date, and detailing exclusive content would do it. I absolutely want them to spend significant time on it, but not the amount of time a stage demo usually takes.

Yep. As long as they show a new location and maybe new enemies/abilities it should be fine. It is as you say one of THE biggest games of the year for any platform

Last year E3, Sonyspent around 25 to 30 min (accumulated) in revealing PS4, No-DRM policy, price announcement and other random stuff. It was necessary last year but this year they have to cover that up with games. I don't want to see what they have for PS4 updates or features etc that could be announced later. But E3 conference should all be about games, especially new IPs with real-time demos or trailer rather CGI's.

Well obviously it is my personal opinion. They need to show it briefly to keep up a profile, but as much as you may love the system (and to be honest I had a vita and it really was a fantastic handheld), most people don't care and don't want it. Most people will game now on their phones or tablets if they want a mobile gaming device and the small percentage that don't will buy a DS for their Nintendo fix. Just look at the sales - that is proof that hardly anyone does care.
It's sad as I once owned a Vita and it has some decent games and backwards compatibility on it through the digital download service is awesome, but the hard truth is the time for the system to sell has passed and it is now seen as a failed product. In America it's close to non existent, in Europe it's dying a quick death and even in Japan; the land of handheld gaming, it still sells poorly.

By all means announce new things across E3 via press releases, and spend a little time on stage to keep people aware its around, but the majority of viewers and potential customers tuning in on June 9th are watching for one thing. Reasons to buy a PS4 or reasons to justify their PS4 purchase.

Again just my opinion.

I'm gonna guess the staples will be AC, Batman, Destiny (hopefully not, but very likely). The Order, Driveclub, Uncharted are practically confirmed.

I'm expecting TLG and possibly Project Beast.

Hoping for new SSM, Mm or Bend project. Or GG RPG would be cool.

Agree with everything.

This is the best thing.

I still think Sony possess a lethal weapon in their arsenal : Them having the most powerful plateform and the most technically gifted developers will most certainly help them produce the most impressive games of this coming E3. Even if they lost in terms of sheer content, they could compensate by bringing the most spectacular showcases.

I promised myself that If TLG wasn't announced this E3, I would give up all hope and forget about the game.

To me it makes sense if Sony told Team Ico to make the game a Ps4 exclusive, and for some strange reason waited to unveil it a year after E3 2013 to generate hype and get fans pumped for another great exclusive.

Honestly though, they've been working on this game for seven years! if the game is still in development why haven't they shower us anything. Its seven years you're telling me you cant come up with two fucking trailers.
FUCK!

Apparently it's been restarted a couple of times and Team ICO bounces around other projects within SCEJ depending on priority. I think Fumito Ueda said a while back that there aren't many working on TLG currently due to other projects.

So... yeah... who knows when this game shows up. They're not going to show a trailer again without a release in sight though, so whenever you do see it, you'll know there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
