Sony's first PS3 title: Heavenly Sword?

From "ugly" to "average"?

MS Damage Control Get! ;)

Seriously though, a) I wouldn't call it ugly - very little is shown to make any kind of judgement, these just seem like concept screens tbh - and b) this media is old and based off of high-end PC hardware that existed long before PS3 specs would be known, let alone before hardware was available. Hopefully we'll see something from Ninja Theory running off PS3 hardware at E3.

What damage is there even to control?

Still HS has bumpmapping and shadowing system so it looks better than Rome. MUCH better but I doubt it will display 1000s of chars, maybe 100s (up to 500-800).

Imagine Total War on a next gen system or on the unreal 3 engine, damn.

look at the bottom left on this pic

Not impressive at all.

Yes it is lower quality but there's also about 100 times as many things being drawn on the screen as those prototype pics. I expect a lot more out of PS3.

just for fun, take that "PS3 shot" and divide the quality of each model by 100.

I guess that having a couple of hundreds mid-polys count characters on screen is something we can expect next-gen. It would prolly look a little better than this screen but not much better (when we speak of a game that needs hundreds of characters on-screen of course)

This shot doesn't really take advantage of the kind of shading power that will be available next gen though..it's really SM2.0 stuff (AFAIK, the team only started working with 6800s, and SM3.0, after this prototype was shown off). SM3.0 opens up some interesting possibilities for scenes like this where you have lots of similar geometry, specifically in terms of introducing variation. I'd expect, for example, that at the very least the men in these armies would all no longer look the exact same, as here. When you introduce variation, there should be a big perceived visual improvement.

True that. That's also why i think it would still look better but if we take this particular shot where it seems to be all soldiers of the same army, they wouldn't look that much different from one another because they all have to wear the uniform. Still this would look better with different hair cuts, differences in the cleanliness and damage on their uniforms and also with a bit more backgrounds and environnement. (even in the desert there maybe more to look at after all)

I dont know what the heck you guys are expecting from the next gen, but clearly you will be dissapointed.

I'm not sure what to expect either :( I just want the second coming of Christ to happen now.

I expect next gen consoles to be about 5-10 times more "powerful" than high end PCs now.

I say "powerful" because part of the extra power will come from efficiency in designing games for static hardware that have lean operating systems. PC games are designed for a large variety of components and it loses efficiency. The video cards are supposedly about 2-3x more powerful than a 6800 Ultra. And the CPUs are much more power in theory than current CPUs.
