Sony's management of the PS4 UI has been atrocious

I enjoy the PS4 greatly in a lot of respects but Sony has proven to be pretty incompetent when it comes to managing the UI on the system as well as related features. It's ridiculous how features such as DLNA and suspending games that were promised have still not appeared getting close to a year and a half into the console's lifespan. The UI itself has also been pretty sad, it's slightly ridiculous that there is still no option to hide icons on the home screen (no thanks Sony I don't want to have share factory and music unlimited cluttering up the area) or create custom folders to actually organize icons. I thought xmb was bad but somehow they managed to top it and create an even more clunky interface. It's sad that the Vita has the best interface out of the Sony family by far at the moment.

Why is Sony so incapable of delivering on this front?

Please note the point of this thread is not to compare to the Xbox One, thanks.
 
Completely agree with you OP still no suspend which was promised and not being able to hide icons or better manage them is just a pain.

I hate getting on my console and just seeing random apps I don't want on the home screen. Makes it look really ugly.

Found your problem.
 
I loved the XMB, I hate the current system.

The library is clunky to navigate, the OS is slow, the voice commands aren't great either.


Just let me have it like I have my PS3 set up, let me organise all my games in folders and display them under a "Games" header, I have my PS3 set up to show my digital games under genre and it's perfect, I feel like playing MGS? I find them all under Stealth, I fancy playing CoD AW? I just go to FPS.
 
The worst UI of every console/handheld this gen, and that's saying something, as none is really good.
Also, for the features,

Also I don't mind it since I personally don't use much of anything other than playing games.
But that's just me.
 
PS4 UI is great, much better than the Vita.

The icons you don't use are at the bottom of the list, or hidden in the library if you have more than 15 games. Works great.
 
Its funny, we make fun of Sony's stability obsession but never more than this gen am I glad for it.

While the OS/UI lacks in a LOT of areas, I like how stable and responsive it feels compared to the competition. If I could get that sort of response from my Xbox dash, id be in heaven.
 
Fortunately they got most everything they tried to right with the UI at launch. Their speed when it comes to upgrades and updates is glacial at best though.
 
Not delivering features is definitely a worthwhile complaint but the "UI" is minimalist and fast for me. The three row system of System/Settings, Games/Apps, and Live Areas is much easier for me to use than the Wii U's grid and the XB1's tile interface.

I hope they give us the option for folders (use the video services folder as a template) but I'm thrilled with its ease of use.
 
I thinks it's superior in the UI aspect, it's extremely simple and effective. You said not to compare it to the One but as far as UI it's definitely not atrocious compared to that mess of a UI.

If you mean hide by integrating Share factory into the UI instead of being a icon sure I guess but if you never use it it'll eventually be hidden if you never use it and only show 15 icons. If you use it frequently I don't see how it's a serious problem.

This is a new week so I expect at least another 4 threads relating to feature set.

Edit: if you actually write down on paper the way the UI works it's 3 tiers the top being system the middle being apps and the lower level is information on the app selected.

It's just vastly superior in every way. I've almost sold my One because of its UI. It's laggy and incredibly aggravating.
 
I like it more than the xbox ones, but I just wish I could put custom backgrounds, the ps3 let me do it, come on!

Better than the vita by a billion times more. I hate feeling that I need to touch the screen just to do anything
 
I wish I could hide some icons or stop posting activities to the stream thing because I blocked two people yet I still see updates from one of them for some fucking reason. The only other issue I have is that the system is clearly struggling to load in everything when you first turn the system on or press the button in the middle of a game.
 
Need to bring back the ps3 XMB. That is really all.


Also, just let me sort and bring the apps that I use up front and put the Sony store BS either to the right or hide completely.
 
The UI is fine (from my experience; I don't own the system yet). Fast and straightforward.

The problem is the updates/"broken promises" in my opinion (I also don't really like the style/look of the UI but that's more so my personal taste).

Its actually a great UI, though I do think it could use more organization options like folders. I also think Library should be to the left of What's New instead of all the way at the end of the list.

But, yeah, the OS does need the features like DLNA and Suspend/Resume, but that doesn't have anything to do with UI.
 
Sure we are still waiting on suspend/resume, but the PS4 OS is snappy and simple.... It does what it needs to do... The PS4 is a gaming machine first, and the OS reflects that...

I don't understand this line of thinking.

It's a bad thing to want features that were promised that help in making the experience of using the system faster/more convenient?

"It's not helping in the console war so who cares!"
 
I doubt there will be a one size fits all solution to the PS4's UI. I loved the PS3 XMB. It made so much organizational sense. I also like the PS Vita UI. It is like the iPhone's UI, but more playful.

I'm not sure I would group the suspend/resume functionality into UI though.

Couldn't agree more. I'm annoyed by the complete lack of customization options, but, man, dat speed and responsiveness is unparalleled.

Yup. Just because it doesn't heavily influence sales doesn't mean it isn't important.
 
The interface is amazingly cluttered, I shouldn't be forced to have to look at have music unlimited permanently stuck to my main bar which already has enough junk filling it up as it is.

For those who insist on comparing it to the Xbox, I wish Sony would learn a thing or two from them about actually allowing for some reorganization and cleanliness on the home page.
 
I don't understand how a company like Sony with so many talented software teams can't make and maintain good console OS's. It's shocking how poor they are at it.
 
The PS4 UI is functional but damn is it ugly. Who thought it was a good idea to have apps lined up horizontally? There must be a better layout for them to use. Also, folders are really needed.

Does it not move into the Library if you have 15 recent apps used?

And I can't possibly see how folks love the Xbox UI. It's hot garbage from an interface perspective using any other input other than voice.

It's a different design ethos. On XB1, you can put whatever you want into into the pins, but it's just a grid and games, apps, system functions, etc. are just put there together. On PS4, its main focus is quickly getting you to the things you play or watch most often. System functions, however, are all organized thoughtfully and within easy reach.

I wouldn't say either ethos is hugely better than other, and they could both be better in ways.

I also don't think Music Unlimited or whatever is stuck in the tiles on the home menu. It's certainly not on mine and hasn't been in a long time.
