Sony's response to EA Access Subscription plan

This whole thing fits well with Nadella moving the Xbox brand to mobile and cloud. Maybe MS will buy EA, or EA will partner with a spin off of the Xbox division. It seems we still have to wait and see where the rest of the MS cuts are going to be in the coming months. I don't think we have the total of the 18,000 yet, and it will be interesting to see how this shapes their direction.

In all seriousness, Nadella and Spencer preached the "mobile first, cloud first" mantra when making a statement about the layoffs. Even Mattrick going to Zinga is congruent to their plan. EA and MS are both going to be looking to subscription plans as their core business. They really have not deviated from their original plans when they announced the Xbox One.

Agreed. Someone made mention of possible compilation games like Mass Effect Trilogy being timed exclusive for EA Access members. Things like that would be pretty major IMO.

They can sure as hell ignore Plus though and that's my point. Sony can say no all they want, but if it's successful on X1, publisher/developers aren't going to be happy that Sony is refusing to allow them access to that much bigger PS4 install base and they won't be below averaging their big hitters to try and force Sony to relent.

And they also won't be below withholding their games from Plus as a means to apply pressure to Sony. It's not always about who has the biggest install base, the Wii should have taught everyone that. It's about what's in the best interest of the publishers and if they feel Sony isn't playing ball, there's nothing to stop them from picking up their ball and going home.

Who suffers in that scenario? PS4 owners.

Its the same price as EAs plan if you buy a yearly sub from EA and get GCU on sale.

I have a feeling Sony is more scared of the future that entails from major publishers having their own subscription service that is cheaper than PS+.

In a more positive light, I would love if Sony would add a flat rate discount on (their) digital games for PS+ members.

Why the hell would they do that when it will fly off the goddamn shelves at 60$ a pop? How naive can you honestly be.
 
I enjoy sports games but I don't typically buy them any more. I would be interested in access to last year's releases for $30 though. Wish Sony would at least give us the choice, it's a good value.

If I understand it correctly...

- I'm then stuck with digital editions of games I no longer want..can't trade them in as the newer version approaches..if you buy physical copies and time things right its usually not an issue to get ~$15 on a trade

- the 5 days early access is for demo type stuff no? I thought I remembered reading that...

Uhhhh what. How does EA lose in that situation. Sony needs EA, not the other way around. Imagine if battlefield, Madden and fifa went exclusive to Xbox?

Paying for what you want doesn't matter to me, I just don't want to be dragged along with you when every publisher under the sun now wants me to get another subscription to get the full value from my games.

Just as they weren't stupid enough to withhold their games from the OG Xbox when MS demanded they use Live instead of their own service?

EA will do whatever it takes to make sure this service, if successful, is on every platform and if that means taking a short term hit, they'll take as they've demonstrated in the past. Sony has more to lose in this scenario than EA.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Microsoft has their deal locked down for several years.

And EA is going to be losing out on the deal because they're missing out on 60-70% of their potential customers.

Except GCU gives you 20% off any retail game you want. And often times, Best Buy will give you $10 reward zone credit for pre-ordering many of the big games. Essentially making games $40ish at launch.

The only way I think EA's deal really appeals to me is if by subscribing to EA's thing, it would allow me to play online just for EA's games rather than having to shell out another $60 or so on Gold.

That's never going to happen. EA has a lot more to loose because cutting out PS means loosing out on a ton of sales. They'd get crucified by their shareholders, and quickly come back. Plus, Fifa and Madden can't be exclusives, since if they were, EA would loose the rights.

Be realistic dude, EA has way, way more to loose.

Using your example... 10% off a $60 game is $6. That means for $30 bucks a year, you're "saving" $18 bucks.. which means you're paying $12 more per year than you would without the subscription. The extras you gain for that $12 would be access to the vault (which for someone who is only interested in the hot new games, is nearly worthless) and a 5-day early access period that limits progression in one way or another until the official release date/purchase.

So, for someone only interested in playing new games, the question becomes whether it's worth it to pay $12 for early access. The service itself wouldn't break even for that early access until you average 5 new games a year.

The people who truly gain value from this subscription are those who don't mind playing titles once they're considered "old." Though even with the subscription.. they're still not getting any of the DLC for those games.

It's not a clear cut value for any one type of gamer at the moment really. Well unless you're the type of gamer who loves to play a lot of EA sports games and doesn't mind playing them once they're a year+ old. Those types stand to see the biggest value.

Or maybe after Sony said no, MS decided to hop in and propose that they make it seem like an exclusive feature to garner more support. It's all business man.

There are two other competitors along with PC. If most publishers move to those platforms, what do you think will happen to the PS4? Think gamers will just stop gaming because PS4 is getting no games? Come on now.

People think Sony is the be all end all of gaming.

it could go either way but you are right the presser yesterday did mention that it was an xbox exclusive.

I am sure they knew the outcome from Sony and decided to word it that way.

it could be the other way around but I doubt it.

Thanks for taking that segment of my post out of context.

Good thing you're here to distort the point I made regarding the ps+ status quo offering what I believe to be real and direct competition between publishers vying for exposure through Sony's service vs a potential future when myriad publisher-specific subscription services merely offer their own content on their own terms at prices determined by themselves in more of a car dealership form of competition.

I'd just prefer to hear the real reasons why it's not available, but I fear it's far too juicy for public consumption.

No doubt Sony sees EA as a competing service, after seeing the prices of PS NOW the EA prices make Sony's offering look that much worse.

I would rather see EA discount games and let people just buy them digitally at a deep discount. I am not a fan of renting games via a monthly service so in that respect I am glad Sony snuffed them out . I don't want to see a digital rental service on the PS4 (PS Now included)

Not really. If Sony had said yes to this on PS+, the service on XB1 would have no less required MS's cooperation.

You're talking about the value proposition I'm talking about the actual price. EA Access is 30 dollars a year IF you buy a yearly sub and GCU is is 30 dollars a year IF you buy it on sale.

In my earlier post I'm talking about snapping up a month to month sub when its convenient to me for the price of 4 dollars. That's an option GCU does not offer regardless of value. And more importantly it isn't an either or they both have have their own inherent value.
 
I think Sony made the right call.

We've seen too much anti-consumer crap from EA (season pass, online pass, day-1 DLC that's obviously cut from the main game).
No way I'm going to trust them on this.

The discount is bullshit. The origin store prices are stupidly high for new/preorders, so 10% won't even take them below Amazon prices.

Early access is bullshit. If the game is ready, it's ready. They aren't giving early access at all. They're delaying access unless you pay their extra toll.
EA are just holding their games ransom for 5 days so that they can double dip the pockets of people who've already paid for the game.

Sometimes 'choices' are bullshit. Sony have the right to keep that crap off their platform.

If it turns out that Sony are wrong and EA subscriptions are the best deal for consumers since forever, then they can just change their minds and allow it. Just like MS changed their minds and said "Actually, free games with the online subscription are a good idea".

Having it on all platforms would make it the thin edge of the wedge for Activision and Ubisoft to add similar services. Before long you've got 4 subscriptions just to play the latest map pack on Call of Battlecreed 6 and get the early-access bonus gun.

They did. Funny thing is it's a PS+ title for August.

I agree with others that choice is good but also share the concern of other publishers following EA. I mean we already have scenarios where retailer A gets this but B gets that and platform A gets this B gets that. This just seems to muddy the waters even more.

They did that because they'll lose money by accepting MS demands, just like in this case they'll lose money by not getting money from people who don't have EA Access.

This argument isn't about Sony, many (most?) Xbox owners will not subscribe to this service. Do actually belive EA will make a major franchise exclusive to the very few people with EA Access account?

Could mean, they just looked at what EA Access was doing on XB1 and decided not to pursue EA with acquiring the service.
 
I don't think there's much people with enough time to play through EA Access and PS+ monthly releases. At least I won't have the time to do that. I envy the people whom will have the time to play through a few of the games in the EA Access if its ever release on sony consoles.
 
It sounds like Sony could be listening to people getting pissed at EA.

Somebody probably thought communities like GAF would approve this decision.
