Soul Calibur III ... PS2 exclusive?

So apparently on page 73 of the MAY Gamepro (no Lamepro section or anything) it has a preview for Soul Calibur III. There's a relatively convincing scan floating around but I can't post it or link it for obvious reasons.

But anyway, here is what it says... in summarized form so it's not a direct quote:

-PS2 Exclusive
-Create your own fighters (determine sex, weapon type, etc...)
-Battle through the ranks w/ your created fighter w/ "World Competition mode"
-Other modes include Soul Arena and museum
-Also you can choose your created characters "occupation" as well
-in Museum mode you can view the history of the franchise "including Soul Calibur II"
-Target Release Date: Fall 2005

I have the scan/photo but I can't post it.

I've never "jumped the gun" before so don't kill me if it turns out fake but I thought I'd bring it to your attention if true.

Credit totally to Legacy.

Oh yeah...

EDIT: joestamp has confirmed it IS in Gamepro so it seems this is indeed a reality.

Why would Namco do that? GC version sold better, and Xbox version still sold over 500,000 which is relatively close to what the PS2 version did.

Sold best on GC, and Namco have a lot of Nintendo support at the moment so i can't see this.

Yeah, I discussed this very aspect when viewing the scan. Just doesn't seem... logical. The reason I did post this is because the actual scan is VERY convincing. It has some pretty advanced character art and screens if it's fake, so I weighed the pros and cons and decided it might have an air of reality considering Namco said in an interview it would try to license Dante from Capcom to use in Soul Calibur III.

The argument, of course, is the article called SCII a disappointment and "ill-fated."

No, May issue.

Here is the scans defense:

In defense of GamePro (which I personally feel has always been a cut above the average brainless pandering of most mainstream game magazines), 'Four-Eyed Dragon' is a douchebag. I recall reading somewhere that he's prompted more angry letters to the magazine than X many other editors combined, he's a notorious whore for EA, and as far as I can tell he's just a little bitch who likes to be controversial to make it look like he knows more than he does. A lot of his other writing has led me to the conclusion he hates fighting games to begin with, and really had no business writing this piece. So his misinformed and obviously biased opinions probably don't reflect the magazine as a whole.

As far as the page being photoshopped, the images and text are slightly non-symmetrical in spots, there's visible color breakup and distortion throughout the image, and the text on the opposite side of the page is readily visible. It even matches the new GamePro design set to debut next month. There's no indication whatsoever that the image is a forgery.

People seem to forget that the ONLY reason Soul Calibur went to the Dreamcast was because Namco needed a big money-making release and the PS2 wasn't going to be out until the next year. If the PS2 and DC were out at the same time Namco needed to release Soul Calibur, you can be sure that it would've been on the PS2 instead.

Probably is a PS2 Exclusive version. i.e with Dante

GC will be an exclusive version with said character again (Who else this time, can't use Link twice.....SAMUS!!!)

Another thing is with SC coming to DS, i can't see just PS2 exclusivity

If this article is true, and there's plenty of arguments on both side, then it would definitely suggest Soul Calibur 3 is fully PS2 exclusive. The wording is very clear, although obviously I can't replicate it here.

There is really no other response.

:lol :lol

EA (they distribute lots of Namco games in Europe) had Soul Calibur 3 in their planning for the end of the year an all 3 platforms, plus Xbox360.

I wouldn't mind (that would be a great launch title), but I think Namco would have issues not bringing out a Revolution version after the GC's sales.

Ridge Racer on the PS3 should be absolutely friggin' smoking though.

Y'know I wouldn't be surprised if Sony gets Resident Evil 5 premiere from Capcom though.

Interesting. I would love for you to see the scan - it's very convincing. Maybe it's a timed exclusive?

yeah it's really in the may issue got it right here

Ok.

Seriously, back up.

Are you non-jokingly confirming that this is in the May Issue of Gamepro.

On page 73.

Confirm/deny for finality w/out sarcasm.

There could have been a change of plan, or maybe it's an exclusive for the US, or the EA information is wrong, or anything else. I did not see this EA planning myself so...

When will developers stand up and tell the grade school kids that they CAN'T RUIN VIDEO GAMES ANYMORE.

The wording is very clear on the article if it's real.

It says... only one sentence though...

"For one, Soul Calibur III will be a PlayStation 2 exclusive."

Yup, that's it. And you have this issue? Wow.

I'm trusting you, so I guess this is real.

But this is weird on so many angles.

ManaByte said:
No it isn't :)

There are quite a few big-name sequels for the PS2 at E3. SCIII is just the tip of the iceberg.

I think the weird part is Gamepro getting an exclusive that wasn't some Dragonball Z game. :lol

"I just keeding!"

Yeah you knew Sony is going to be making some big deals.

Remember at E3 2001 (I think) when they announced Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Virtua Fighter 4, Ace Combat etc. were PS2 exclusive/premiere?

I'd expect the same thing for PS3.

They'll get at least one or two big franchises exclusive/premiere from Namco, Capcom, Konami, Sega, etc.

I really think Resident Evil could be going back to being a Sony-first franchise for instance.

Having a game feature Adult Link is pretty much a license to print money, this would be a stupid decision by Namco if true. (And assuming Link would return to SC3)

So anyway now that we have this confirmation from joestamp, what does the entail? Is it a timed exclusive and coming to Xbox360 down the line? Does this mean PS2 players can expect Dante to be in the game?

What are the implications?

Finally, why would Namco decide to put it on the system that sold the second best amount of copies of Soul Calibur II? Besides, of course, moneyhats...

GCN SOUL CALIBUR II 789,964
PS2 SOUL CALIBUR II 736,372
XBX SOUL CALIBUR II 529,190

Ok, more information from the article.

- Also you can choose your created characters "occupation" as well
- in Museum mode you can view the history of the franchise "including Soul Calibur II"
- Target Release Date: Fall 2005

This is in the May issue because the game is part of Namco's E3 showing. You'll probably see it in other mag's E3 issues as well. And it IS PS2 exclusive.

surely soul calibur 3 should be a next gen title?

Why? The PS3 won't be out until next fall in the US. Xbox 360 has fighting games already with DOA4 (and the rumored VF5) so why make it compete? On the PS2 it could be the flagship exclusive fighting game this fall.

I guess so.

Also, the scan can be found at the old haunts.

You'd thought japanese companies would have learn on the examples like SCII that multiplatform releases of the big titles is way to go if you want stay competitive on the western market. BUT NO!. Dumbasses rather have their asses kicked sales-wise by mediocrities like MK. :lol
But sure, there's chance Sony's moneyhats were involved in this, though I doubt.

because visually it would blow shit away instead of just looking really good?

I think Namco is more concerned with selling copies to a very very large and established userbase as opposed to fighting for shelf space against DOA4 with a very small new userbase and "blow shit away" visually.

Phantasy Star Universe and Soul Calibur III exclusivity on the same day? Sony certainly aren't resting on their laurels...

Yeah, I really think that both graphically and gameplay, with Soul Calibur for DC and SC2 for PS2, the game is at the maximum for this gen.
