Soulcalibur V |OT| Go home and be a salary man!

SC has been going down the wrong path since 2 if you ask me. It's become a much more linear, slugfest, a lot more in line with Tekken than the old Soul Caliburs. Movement is nothing compared to before and it just doesn't feel good. Older games had problems for sure but those could be fixed if the team was smart and knew how to do it rather than do a negative balancing.

Why has anyone ever cared about Critical Finishes? They happened so rarely they were barely a mechanic.
That's not especially accurate. They showed up in tournament play quite a bit and guard crushing was a tactic that several players used successfully.

Made Ivy and Voldo dangerous and Omega's GI's with Zas would tend to lead to CF's as well.

If there's anything to complain about it's just guards. The more people poke at the mechanic the stupider it gets. You can JG after a tech in situations you shouldn't be able to guard at all. You can also JG immediately after whiffing a GI. Viola has some JG shenanigans to cancel being put into a GI'ed state...

Game would've been better without JG's at all. Take GI's off the meter and leave it at that.

Man this game was a fucking disappointment. I can overlook all of the obvious flaws that people are complaining about but the biggest problem is the lack of repeating death cries. Don't bullshit around, everyone that's played SC has had fun slashing a corpse to hear them scream in pain. They didn't even bring back death cries when getting rung out. They added some voice clip which can barely be heard and isn't that funny most of the time. I feel like going back to 4 just because it's the only online capable SC that has those things. If SC4 had SC5's game speed it'd probably the best or if not just a bit under SC2 magnificence.

DLC is not going to get pumped into the game anymore so we're stuck with only having Dampierre as the only additional characters while having 2 other useless characters that could have had their own unique moveset (Kilik and Elisyum).

Oh yeah, I thought it was a nice feature that Algol could costume change finally but the fact that CaS couldn't derive his abilities was just terrible. And what's the explanation for Dampierre and Aeon not being able to change costumes?

I think I've had my maximum fun with Soul Calibur 5. They tried to take a serious tournament-y game approach and fucked it up hard.

Online is completely dead. I've searched all settings on "any" for ten minutes in Ranked and not found anyone. Player matches may be more active but I never tried at varying times of day.

The online is still active for this right? Or did Tekken and DOA completely suck out all the life it had?

Dunno what criteria you all are using for dead, but I tend to get matches on XBL at a fairly brisk pace.

That's it, then! I'm playing on PS3. I don't play fighting games online, though. I understand Namco promoting TTT2 more than SCV since Tekken is this year's release. I don't see DOA5 as being competition to any 3D fighting game. That's not a slight against DOA; I think those who like 3D games play most of them in tandem and I haven't know of any player migrating from their current game to DOA.

So after playing SC IV for years and mastering it offline, I finally bought this game today not knowing anything about it.

After two hours of game-play, so far, I'm not happy.

Taki is gone and Kilik is replaced by some pretty boy Justin Beiber look-alike. His move-set has been changed dramatically. I can't even fight the same. I guess Natsu will have to be my MC but she's so damn terrible looking.

Talim is gone too. What were they thinking?

The graphics look better. Not sure if I like how I get death rained upon me when I'm on the ground. GI is waaaay too different. It's changed too much for me to use it effectively.

Not liking it at all. I only spent $30 bucks on it brand new but I am having buyers remorse.

you'll have to adapt ..sure some characters disapeared but some new blood came in ...
As for kilik , he was broken before , and the new guy isn't hard to master at all ..

GI now is something you have to place into your opponent rythm , rather than a safe to use technique ..the end result is that many matches are much more fast paced for me .. and that a well placed GI is always decisive

My advice would for you to dive into the new mecanics ..there is good stuff in there.

Kilik wasn't broken. If you stayed in close and took it to an infight, it's very possible to beat him most of the time.

Several characters are gone. And the move sets, while seeming the same at first glance, is really different when you dive deeper. I'm not used to that. Such major changes haven't been made like that since II.

I'll try more later and post my thoughts and see if I'm worthy of going online.

Well, almost. You can cancel a whiffed GI with a just guard. Which can let you do stuff like this:

Really though for most things, JG has basically taken the place of olde tyme guard impacting.

Wow. CJ's playing?

Not so much now. He's gone home to be a family man. :p

He wants to play more, though. Been trying to play on the weekends.

Yeah, sorry about the vid length. I am new to this video capture thing. I don’t know how to use editing software yet.

I'm natsu, cj is ivy.

Good to know CJ's still getting some games in. Still remember him drunk squashing me in SC1.

To liven up the thread a bit more, I did capture some SC IV footage recently.

I think some people have the nostalgia goggles on a bit too tight.

Yeah, CJ has always been my training partner. I'm sad he doesn't play as much, but life is more important. He's on gaf. I'll have to see if I can get him in here.

I love SC4. I've enjoyed every SC. Even 3 when you avoid the glitches.

I didn't mind SC3 except that VC looked absolutely terrible. SC IV was fine as long as you didn't play Maxi. He got thrown under a bus there so I hold a grudge there. ;)

I'm pretty sure you got me with Taki once in SC 3. Went up to a DFG training thing at the Dojo when it was open at Flatirons Crossing and my Maxi got worked that day. (Go by Marginal everywhere else but GAF.)

Oh yeah, we've definitely met. :)

I suck so much at this game, but I had fun. I haven't had the time to play like I want to, but that's life. School, photography, and being a family man is keeping me busy.

So did any DLC characters ever end up coming out for this game? I was put off by the several characters (with unique playstyles) getting dumped.

DLC characters are a bigger deal than you might think. Adding a new character to a roster means rebalancing every other character on that roster. DLC characters that aren't designed with the rest of the game (like Dampierre) aren't really very practical outside of a Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition style overhaul.

Which I would absolutely be down for, by the way.

RIP Zasalamel

Can't believe you dropped him. He would've been amazing with BE and a super.

Yeah, really. And his whole reincarnation deal could have lead to an interesting redesign.

Which begs the question of why they took out some of those unique characters at all. Especially when many of the new characters seem to just be old playstyles with younger characters.

To keep the roster manageable and (mostly) balanced in the short amount of development time they had, I would imagine.

New characters with old playstyles is a namco trademark. Not surprised this happened in SC.

I would kill baby bunnies for a super sc5 with some returning faces.

I'll add you tomorrow.

Word.

Is there a good guide out for learning this game? Preferably in video form.

Edit: Also, unlike some people above, I'm not at all disappointed by SCV. I think it's the best SC has been since SCII. SCIV didn't feel as exciting. I'm not minding the roster changes either.

This covers a lot.

Outside of that, www.8wayrun.com has a handy wiki.

Also it's been gone over in the thread before, but if you get knocked down often the best way to avoid further damage is to either do nothing or rise in place guarding. Teching and rolling can lead to massive damage. Gotta be careful about those until you get a better understanding of where it's beneficial to roll etc.

Way too many beginners keep trying to use rising attacks from knockdown. This leads to endless counter hit situations. (Which seems to be frustrating for them given my hatemail.)

Please for the love of god nerf Pat a bit. What an utterly absurd character.

Wut? He's fine.

If anybody needs nerfing it's Viola. I prefer buffs over nerfs, though.

Also, please fix movement. Sidesteps should be a CH because 8wr is so powerful, but forward and backdashes? No. Remove CH on those, please.

Some damage tweaking wouldn't hurt Viola that much.

God no. You can g cancel forward dash at any time. PS never gave forward dash any negative penalties. That doesn't need to be buffed. Not sure how it could be short of giving it aGI properties. ;)

Given you can cancel a back dash into a sidestep, it's not all that risky even if you are -20. You can also cancel backstep with GI, and then cancel the GI if it whiffs with a friggin' JG. It does burn some meter, but it is still fairly safe.
