Does anyone else remember this classic, 80s series? There was also some sort of reboot pretty recently, so we can talk about both here? The original anime is from 1982, but only the first half of the series was localized in Swedish before they cut it. The Swedish voice acting is today infamous for being laughably bad, it sounds like the actors have zero emotional invest in what they're doing (which makes it sound really funny).

I think Cobra is an inspiration to Metroid, at least partly. You have several blonde sisters who all look very much like Samus. Cobra himself uses an arm canon, like Samus. The series is a lot about bounty hunters and galactic criminals being hunted down throughout space. And of course, the serires is known for having almost every woman in a thong:

Apart from the different outfit, doesn't she look exactly like Samus from behind? You can't see it here, but she even has the same sideburns as Samus does.

Do you know about Cobra? Have you seen it? What do you think about the reboot? Personally, I like the original a lot better. Let's have discussions about everything Space Adventure Cobra.

I'm a big fan of this manga/anime and it's creator Buichi Terasawa. His art is spectacular and while there is an abundance of cheesecake at least he draws his women like... you know? Real women.

Much better than a lot of the moe crap that makes up most anime today. And speaking of influences, Terasawa's style is not surprising considering his favorite film is the 1968 cult scifi film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda.

Cobra is one of my favorite anime shows of all time. Non-stop fun in a vast space setting with that charismatic badass who’s always joking. The direction by Osamu Dezaki is masterful and timeless much like his other works. The French dub was excellent and Cobra’s voice actor nailed his playful, no-fucks-given personality.

I've only seen the movie and the newer anime OAV/TV series but yeah it's great stuff. I really hope the original TV series gets a new physical release.

I love the movie, it's so rich visually and the character is cool as hell. I've never seen the 1982 series though, not so interested in the newer stuff.

The original TV series got a DVD release, so you should be able to find that.

It just occurred to me that a thread on a series like Cobra would have been frowned upon in pre-ResetEra GAF. Like, this stuff is what SJWs go nuts over.

Objectified sexy women! White male protagonist who chomps on a cigar and promotes smoking! Cobra is pretty much James Bond mixed with Star Wars. It's an old school male fantasy that's not been cucked by today's politcal climate.

I love it. :messenger_beaming:

Fun fact: The mangaka used the features of a French actor he liked a lot: Jean-Paul Belmondo

An excellent manga/anime that represents the 80's well. And good God, that it misses so much in our time.
I love information like this! Well, almost as much as I love looing at Dominique's generous ass in OP. I had no idea they got the design from that, thanks for telling everyone!

That OP pic has the best drawn ass I've ever seen (2D) along with Samus from Zero Mission. I love the contrast between her toned back and her not so toned backside.

I finally got hold of a copy of the Mega CD game after not picking it up back in the day for some reason (I think it was a very late release, which is probably why) and not picking it up on ebay when the price was still sane, so I've been on a bit of a Cobra kick lately. I watched the movie, which I'm not a massive fan of to be honest, and I'm mid way through the '80s anime series, which I really like. Trying to read the manga too, though I'm trying to read the French ones and my French is very limited.

The anime's really good. Cobra's a kind of a goofy badass, which is an unusual combination, and the series itself is a nice mix of sci-fi, action, and humour. I'll get hold of the blu ray set of the newer shows in the near future and see how they compare.

The digital comics released for the PS1 were kind of cool too. They used the art from the mangas that they were adapted from but added animations, and the third one was fully voiced too. Also, they feature the only nudity that I've seen in an officially released PS1 title. Two of them adapt "The Psychogun" parts one and two, which also got another PS1 adaptation in the form of "Cobra the Shooting". That's... not so good. Walk down narrow corridors, shoot stuff, and sidestep or duck to avoid being shot. It's serviceable I suppose but the graphics aren't too hot and other than being a little maze like in places the level designs are really simple.

As for the butt: (y) When I was a teenager, magazine screenshots of Jane's thong clad ass from the Mega CD game were what piqued my interest in Cobra to begin with. Possibly thong related, the ratings agencies of the time were seriously all over the place in how they viewed the game: UK - PG (no age limit), Germany - 6+, ESRB - M, ELSPA - 18+

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the new series that had a teaser released a few years ago? Cobra - Return of Joe Gillian? Shibuya Productions, of Shenmue 3 fame, had something to do with it but there doesn't seem to have been any news in years.

Wasn't an OG fan, only discovered it recently. Love it. Premiere sci fi action adventure, paved way for Cowboy Bebop/Trigun/Space Dandy later. Very westernized. Masculine lazy but alpha protagonist. Curvaceous (but formidable) women. Gun based violent action out the wazoo but never too serious. Always funny. Show was so good b/c Osamu Dezaki expert directing/storyboarding. Same guy behind Golgo 13 movie, Black Jack movie, Ashita no Joe. GOAT Director, iconic works.

Also recommend Dirty Pair, similar vibes.
