The Everyman
i totally get how the style would give people headaches but GODDAMN. that last race was INTENSE

i've heard its a big love or hate movie and i think im definitely in the love camp

GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER, GO SPEED RACER GOOO~

Watched about 40 minutes or so of the live action movie. Turned it off and began to punch myself in the balls repeatedly. It was a much more enjoyable experience.

Yea, this film was certainly marketed to the wrong audience. I don't think kids could keep up with the 15 plotlines introduced in the first scene.:lol Great film though.

The visuals were interesting enough the first time through that I was able to actually watch it without loathing it. Didn't hold up on repeat viewing. It's not a good movie. That's not to say it can't be enjoyable, because well, obviously there are people who do. Critically speaking though, it was a complete mess.

Thank god I am not a critic because it was fucking awesome on the second and third and fourth time i watched it.

Good movies are enjoyable. I enjoyed it, thus it's a good movie in my opinion. Bad movies are not enjoyable. You didn't enjoy it, thus it was a bad movie in your opinion. I don't think you can factually state that a movie is bad or good. If I had to take guess though, I'd guess most kids loved it.

You've never watched a movie that you thought was bad but still had fun watching it? Or that was well made but just not your cup of tea? I've always felt it's possible to seperate personal perception from objective comparisons.

Speed Racer had poor writing and even poorer acting, I don't think you could deny that. I would also argue that the directing was grossly subpar and the visuals were a little too ridiculous (the anime fight scene between the kid and his chimp, I mean really), but those are more subjective. Compared to other movies aimed at the same demographic that came out at the same time (Wall-E, Kung-Fu Panda, etc.), it wasn't even on the same level as far as sophistication of effort or talent. Yeah, I didn't enjoy it, but I haven't labeled it as being bad strictly because of that.

I can understand why people can criticize Speed Racer but it is not a bad movie.

A bad movie is Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Shame on you Capcom

How was the acting and the writing poor?

It was acted and written like a cartoon, which was the point.

Cartoons can have believable and/or interesting characters, even the most childish ones. That's not a good excuse.

an excuse for what? You didnt say how it was bad in any sense.

In terms of conveying the type of cartoon that Speed Racer was, there was nothing wrong with either the acting and writing The movie IS Speed Racer. Im not sure what else you were expecting.

An excuse for lacking the things I mentioned in the first sentence.

Being a true translation of the source material also isn't necessarily a positive, you know, if the source material was lackluster itself.

I didn't really have any expectations, if it were made in a vacuum it would be a fine enough movie, but compared to other movies of the same ilk (including ones that actually are cartoons) I just feel it's weaker in several major areas, which I've already outlined. I think we're just arguing semantics here, so we should probably just shake hands and agree to disagree.

The final race sequence was the most heart pumping scene from a film I saw last year. The music, the flashback dialogue, the visuals, everything!

We got another one!

Except for the fact that there's no such thing as objectivity when comparing what is good and what is bad.

The original Speed Racer was neither believable nor interesting. It was just some silly characters in silly machines and a silly story. The movie did that, and it was the most faithful adaptation of a cheesy anime. I enjoyed it because of that. Definitely my most memorable movie of 2008.

I was actually quite surprised at how good it was. I expected a disaster but got a very enjoyable film instead. Looks absolutely mesmerizing on Blu-ray, too.

Making really stupid analogies is fun. Please, by all means, continue punching yourself in the balls.

But i definitely agree, saw this movie in theaters, and then again when it came out on dvd. The visuals were spectacular. Not to mention the fight scenes were pretty awesome too. And the last race was absolutely incredible.

All in all, speed racer was a pretty awesome movie.

Great movie that will stand the test of time. It's already gaining quite the cult fanbase.

It's just so well shot, acted, and edited. And Ricci is hot.

Really? Really... fucking REALLY?!

*sigh* oh my god.. I don't want to but after several months of people saying how awesome it is I guess I have to rewatch it. I have no choice. I tried to watch it in theaters but I fucking walked out halfway in man, it was horrible from the little I saw. I left after some guy was giving Speed a tour of his company or some shit. ugh man I just couldn't take it. But after the endless praise it gets from gaffers I have no fucking choice do I? I have to rent it and finish it this time.

I'm still skeptical though. Gaf swore by Juno and I thought that movie sucked a truck load of ass. They also swore by Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and that movie was just ok.

But I'm an open minded man and I'll give it another go. God help me.

It is indeed awesome, some parts are cringe worthy though, mainly everytime that annoying kid was on screen, and worst use of Freebird ever.

Great movie that will stand the test of time as their is nothing else like it out there.
I watch the movie at least once a month and it never gets old.:D

Pretty awesome? Pretty? It was COMPLETELY FUCKING AWESOME.

:lol It completely depends on your frame of mind going in. If you didn't enjoy yourself in the first half, there's NO WAY you're going to like the rest of it.

What? GAF loathed Juno.

Also Speed Racer was fucking awesome. My favorite part was the desert race, with the chick driving and the camera going fucking insane back and forth all over the place. Great movie.

It's a polarizing movie. The last half is no better than the first half.

If you can enjoy the candy coated retro CG cheesiness, then it's pretty much the best example of what it does.

If you can't, then there's no point in forcing it.

Not exactly. When it became a huge hit and Diablo Cody was everywhere getting awards...etc then the hate started. Before when it was a little known indie flick it got a lot hype and a lot of love.

For the people who hated it, do you at least think that the races were awesome? Sure the in between parts were stupid/corny but if you had to rewatch it and only had to see the races...

Yep. This.

I really liked it. Some scenes were crazy intense and it was a very faithful adaptation of the cartoon.

I have a suspicion that the pathetic megafans wouldn't like the movie as much if it weren't for it completely bombing.

I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theatre and while it was far from awful, it wasn't nearly as amazing as some people make it out to be.

It's probably the most creative major release since 1939.
