How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity)

Posted on 12/12/2004 12:45:50 PM PST by KoRn

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

It's not a hack to the server or anything. But it does increase the amount of simultaneous requests to a server, which equals more bandwidth and ultimately more money. If everyone that replies in this thread uses this speed trick, then GAF will be distributing a hell of a lot more bandwidth than it really needs to.

It's not a hack but webmasters don't like it anyway, because it spikes server load.

Yeah, I understand why webmasters don't like it--I just got off the phone debating a jackass over some minute details, so I'm still in asshole mode I guess. It's not a hack, but I didn't need to mention that :\

How do you turn this back off?
Switch the first two integers to no, and the last one to 4 seconds.

I'm guessing you

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "false"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "false"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" back to 4

and reset the Integer you created

i've used pipelining quite a bit in the past, and the speed increase is noticeable, but it's not something anymore. It's too easy to set it and forget to set it back, the drain on servers is heavy, and the speed increase isn't that great for a lot of servers.

There's some extreme speed increases with a few sites, but some sites won't load at all. I'm not sure if it's this or the DNS server problem Comcast was having earlier in the week coming back. Some sites weren't loading before I turned this on anyways though.

Am I missing something?

This modification doesn't increase the amount of stuff you're downloading, it just reduces the time it takes to do it.

You're sending more requests to the server, so it does put a heavier burden on it. The actual information for the page isn't any larger, but the data transfer is due to you repeatedly hitting it.

be forewarned. some sites will slow down like a bitch if you enable pipelining. also, it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Yea, you're right. I turned it off and the sites that weren't loading went to normal. It only really works well on messageboards though.

Anybody know how to change the download manager or speed it up? Am I the only one on whose computer the thing runs absolutely sluggishly? Everytime I donwnload something and it happens to be open, my computer freezes up. Any ways to rectify this problem?

Tools > Options > Downloads > Show download manager when downloads begin (disable)

actually, i take that back slightly. turning pipelining on 'works', but you have to find the right number of max requests to not overload the servers. in my case the best number for speed and efficiency is 3 for instance. i get some speed improvements, but i also lose those instances where servers bog down and don't send me all the images on hand.
