Spirit Airlines Cancelled Flights Causes Chaos at Ft. Lauderdale Airport

**Hidden fees not included in this statement.
All airlines have lots of optional fees, even Southwest which everyone is suddenly in love with for some reason like early check-in and upgraded boarding and additional bags.

Yeah, but once you add in check bag fees, the price difference is negligible considering Southwest had a reputation for good customer service, while United doesn't. That was the case long before the overbooking incident a few weeks ago. But if I was doing an overnight trip, I'd consider Spirit based on the price.

I don't. Hence why I use them like a bus. I do not fly with a carry on, if I do fly them. Basically, point A to B and back. It's the only time I use them and the only time I would recommend them. 2 hour flight for 50 to 70 less? I'll bare with it.

Nah man, I would still fly southwest. You can also easily refund the full cost of your ticket for credit up to 24 hours before and use it on another flight.

My only complaint is that cattle call boarding sucks with a family.

Early check in is $15, and you can get more or less the same thing by checking in manually exactly 24 hours earlier... and you only get the baggage fees if you have more than 2 bags or oversized.

They are far better than the competition on fees, it's not even close.

The last time I flew Spirit, they kept us on the runway at JFK for 2 hours after we landed. We started a "Spirit Sucks" chant that had the entire plane chanting. It was one of those moments that I wish I had recorded.

Is FLL a dangerous airport? It seems like it's been in the news for some terrible stuff lately.

No, but this incident and the airport shooting being so close together isn't going to help their PR. I would still fly though there over MIA as others have stated.

It's a terrible airport to get stuck at. Everything closes around 8pm or last flight. Must suck be stuck there overnight.

It's the closest airport so obviously we take all the time. But I would never take Spirit. I hear way too many stories.

Flew Dallas-Orlando on Spirit earlier this year, had no problems. Our family of four saved hundreds of dollars.

Looking at Bureau of Transportation Statistics, their canceled flight rates aren't egregious. Yes, they're higher, but by a percent of two. It's their delayed flights that are crazy.

I'd be pretty pissed too if I was stranded in Florida.

You think that's bad? Spirit stranded me in Detroit the one time I used them. Same hours-long runaround to figure out what the hell was going on, with no flights out available until two days later.

Never again.

Whoa I just came back from a trip to Fort Lauderdale on Monday using Spirit, but it was to Newark. Good thing it went well.

Been to that airport a few times. Started flying into the one in Palm Beach though. It's smaller but it's never busy when I'm there anyways and it's so far overall been a better experience. It's definitely older than the FLL one though.

Honestly, unless there isn't a flight that goes to your destination, I have no clue why people book anything but Southwest. They usually have good time coverage and no checked bag fees is a godsend. Prices are always reasonable as well.

You can fly Spirit for like half the price. I know it's not for everyone, but I've had nothing but positive experiences, personally.

did they pay for your hotel?

Haha, no. I don't think I ever even got a refund, which everyone was clamoring to do. We kept getting bounced between the service desk and their phone line.

My friend and I wound up getting together with a bunch of other people and renting a minivan to drive through the night to New York.

you're wrong but for posterity: where did you live here, so we can determine the extent of your wrongness

All over South Florida (Downtown Miami, North Miami Beach, Sunrise, Davie, Miami Lakes, Hialeah)

Can't deal with: humidity, low wage compared to cost of living (especially when I was living in Downtown), bad drivers, douchebags, dishonesty in everything (I can't even buy anything without someone trying to nickle and dime me), nowhere to hike etc etc

I'd be pissed. What'd you do the second day?

To be fair... you guys have rioting and looting whenever there's a blackout.

Just how close to the breakdown of society are Americans?

We've rioted in blackouts since there have been lights to black out. Nothing new. Only change is the availability and speed of information.

Price is always to be the determining factor.

While Southwest usually has very competitive rates, they aren't always the best.

I've only flown spirit airlines once, and I hated it. Charge me up the ass for absolutely everything.

If someone hadn't warned me they also charge you to print your fucking bording pass I would have paid for that too

Someone remind me, has American Airlines been caught up in anything stupid lately? I'm flying them this weekend and want to know if I need to ready myself.

You know that probably wasn't their fault, right?

I feel that Southwest hasn't been as competitive on price recently. Or at least when I've been looking for flights over the past year and a half, I've usually found better rates from AA and Delta and United (although flying out of Atlanta and Chicago plays a part in that for sure).
