so everyone who was saying this game needed voice chat have seen the light, right?

It could help...but with people actually "feeling" their teammates during the match ala Souls or Monster Hunter...things will still work out nicely.

Provided everyone understands what the deal is. Man I wish the game had replays for Miiverse and screenshot capping.

My thoughts on the demo:

  • Motion controls are shit, disable immediately forever.
  • Paint Rollers seem unbalanced.
  • Grenades felt huuuge and I'd clip the edges of basically every surface with them. Had weird as fuck throwing arcs as well.
  • Lack of real interaction with opponents to progress the match, combined with no voice chat with my team felt like I was playing alone 75% of the time.
  • Visuals are fucking outstanding.
  • Combat felts awesome as hell when two opponents are shooting each other, strafing, and using ink to move around. Just didn't happen enough or seem to matter at all.
  • Lack of class switching in the middle of a match makes it pretty boring. There is no rock-paper-scissors or adjusting going on by the teams. This is something I despise in modern shooters that lock users to load outs or classes.
  • Wish I could super jump without the touch screen. Having to switch screen focus in an action game blows.
For the most part I wasn't really impressed. I was going to buy this day one initially for streaming, but now I kinda don't care. Game is going to have some really rough balance and options problems with this being Nintendo's first stab at an online shooter. The lack of voice chat still blows my mind.

Seconded everything here.

That was great. Pre-order confirmed and vindicated.

I'll try the roller next time, but the Splattershot bombs were great for PvP.

I wish there was a way to use the Pro Controller in the demo. Hopefully you can use it in the full game. Sorry, I scrub hard at TPS.

got bored of the 2 levels in 1 hour how is it going to be fun with 4 hour stretches of the same 2 maps. no voice chat is dumb i cant tell people to stop following me because i have the goddamn roller and u are just wasting time spraying on top of my ink u morans

At first I was going to wait a while before biting, but now I'll be picking this up at launch. Way more fun than it looked in the videos. Got used to the gyro controls quickly, too.

The Jr. Was actually really good for ink spreading. You can fire continuously forever with it and it has a nice wide spread to get a large surface area.

Won every game except one. I used the Roller, but never actually used the "rolling" part of it and got tons of points every match. Just tossed paint, rushed down and made good use of the ink movement. The rolling movement is too slow so I never felt the need to use it and the paint toss does enough damage to 1-2 hit KO upclose.

I dunno it was fun, but I'm not sure if it would hold my interest since it doesn't feel like there's much to the combat.

Rollers can't do anything if you keep constantly shooting and swimming back when they get close. I rolled over so many players who kept trying to fight me head on.

So many people dismissing the motion controls just because they can't grasp it immediately. It felt like second nature once the hour was up.

Also, fuck the two ledges overlooking the bottom of Saltspray Rig. Some ass was camping and undoing all my hard work as I was covering my turf
I'm a bit salty, lol

I saw quite a few people, including myself, with the pre-order shirts on. Overall, I had a really great time. I didn't care too much for the motion controls, but I think I need a bit more time with them. I didn't want to waste too much time learning a new control scheme, though, so I switched to dual analog.

I don't think I'm going to make the 4am matches, but I'll definitely see you guys at the 12pm session.

yeah, will take a few hours to feel natural

weird, but probably awesome once mastered

At first I hated the gyro controls, then switched to normal, hated those, went back to gyro and they felt sublime

Maybe Nintendo made the "normal" controls so shitty on purpose to make gyro feel good

Do people really have that hard of a time quickly scanning the gamepad for map info and potentially clicking someone to warp? You only really need to look at the map when

1) you die and are waiting to respawn

2) you cover the area around you with ink and need a quick glance to see where to squid/warp to

Its kind of the beauty of the game, if you see big blobs of your opponents ink, ink over it. If you don't quickly scan and warp/swim to where you need to go.

Gotta get better with the charge shot, only tried it once and despite my team winning I barely contributed. Seems like it could be good once I get the feel for it though

I love the squid mode, but it's kinda useless on anything other than your own goo. I don't know, I like it a lot, but it's kinda cumbersome. I guess turning off the motion controls might have helped, I didn't actually know I could do that.

Squid mode came in handy a lot when it came to being stealthy. If they don't notice you, just duck into the paint and pop out with a surprise attack (only worked like twice though as they usually saw me hide).

Also nunchuck and wiimote controls please.

This makes so much sense. My mind cannot comprehend how amazing this would be. If this game had Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition aiming controls, I'd be there day 1.

As it stands, I'm still on the fence and I will see where I stand after the next two tests.

Most of the time plenty of japanese players were in the room with me, and I felt no lag at all. I'm super impressed by the netcode, GG Nintendo.

That was great fun. The matches ran so smoothly without any lag.

I'll be buying this at launch or shortly after.

Wish I knew how to disable gyro controls beforehand. Playing with rollers was probably the most fun for me. Didn't care too much for the Splat Charger.

Great game! Stuck with the Splattershot the entire time and got 1st place on my team in nearly every match, as well as being on the winning team most matches.

I saw a lot of rollers, but until I actually play it I'm not sure how good it will be. Maybe I just played scrubs that had it, but they were really easy to kill as I would either move away with the squid then counter fire as they ran at me, or I would shoot ink on a box to get the high ground where they couldn't reach me.

That demo was way too short. My only complaint was the controls, but now I see I could have turned off motion so maybe that'll help.

Splatoon is good. Really hope this demo drums up interest and this can become a full-fledged IP for Nintendo. Already anticipating the franticness of Splat Zones or the Capture the Tower mode. I think those modes will really lend well to the sniper and allow them to hang back and support the main paint-spreaders on the team.

Yup,. You learn real quick not to mess around with guys with guns if you're using a roller. If they hit you, you STOP COLD.
The one way that you can approach gun users is flanking from the side or back when they're engaged with your teammates, otherwise, yeah stay away.

The charge shot was the one I had the most difficulty with. Regular shots are very short range. Charged ones means you last at most 3-4 full shots but can one shot an inkling. It is definitely more for facing other players rather than gaining turf. If you're a sniper you really need your team to focus on covering ground while you provide defense.
My main problem with charger was the right stick speed was too fast, it was hard point exactly the enemy, although you don't need headshots to instant kill =P

Well had a lot of bad luck with teams (not to paint myself as that great or anything, but almost every team I was part of for the hour had much lower score than the opposing one). It's a lot of fun, I enjoyed it, though I'll have to play it more to get a feel.

I had such a hard time with the gyro controls, though. I was sort of dreading it, even played a little Nintendoland earlier today to try and get used to it. I don't know, just can't really seem to get it down. It's less of an issue with the roller, but with the other weapons found myself getting killed because of it more than a time or two. I wish they were optional. I can live without Pro support, but this...I don't know about this. It kind of made my heart sink a little. I'm never been in a situation where a game looks, feels and sounds exactly like a game ripped right from my own head, but bogged down by such an important element. Man, I just hope I can get used to it.

The little sniper perches overlooking the center and the pile of containers at the top of Saltspray Rig are great for sniping. Rollers barely ever look at you and will just trundle right into your crosshair, especially on the latter, although the angle can be awkward at times because of the hip aiming.

shhhhh don't give away the strategy ;}

I really dont feel like the guns were very good at all. To wide a spread to effectively deal with oppoenents and too narrow a spread to spray ink effectively.

Yeah voice chat would help a lot , but oh well

Lots of people weren't spraying open areas so I just walked in and got free space
I should have pre ordered those amiibos

Exactly, I was hoping that someone was walking at that free space so that I can transport over there with the Gamepad,
thats why voice chat would be handy, oh well here is for hoping that they will implement that soon, other then that the game has potential.
