Splatoon: new stage to be added tomorrow (June 11th)

What?
Show me the hundred megabyte downloads for these maps.

What are you talking about?
hundred megabytes for a few maps? Splatoon as a whole is 1.8GB only. Splatoon is not a PS4 game.

"locked on disc content" is content, that is already on disc, which publishers sell to you as DLC. So how much does Nintendo charge for those maps? If they don't charge anything at all, then it isn't "locked on disc content". It's as simple as that.

Otherwise unlockable content would have to be considered "locked on disc content" as well. For example skins, guns and other crap that you get after playing up to maximum level. Which takes months in certain games.

The game's reception has been fine, both critically and commercially. If drip-feeding content keeps the online community alive, I'm all for it.
That's a big if, though. There's no guarantee that drip feeding content is going to keep people playing (hell, I'm living proof that it isn't). Take a look at Evolve for further proof - they even do Splatfest-style challenges every few weeks to woo people back into the game.

First off: the one and only patch for this game was tiny and was only to fix a glitch. There were no maps included in that download. That's what I was trying to get at by saying "show me the hundred megabyte download for these maps", but it seems you went crazy over the 'hundred megabyte' part.
Second: the fact that we're even delving into the semantics of "locked content" says it all. Lol
It's good that Nintendo isn't charging, but it's still locked, and it can't be unlocked via a player's actions (like ACTUAL unlockable content in other games).

I don't think it's a big if at all. The last two days I've found games in Splatoon faster than ever before. This game's community is not dying anytime soon. Slowly rolling out content is going to do wonders for this game. Just because you aren't interested in the game anymore doesn't mean others feel the same way. I do agree though that having six or seven maps at launch would have been better than five.

There's no guarantee that having the content there all day one would have kept people from getting bored either.

I mean you get bored next week instead of last.

While I would have liked more content at launch. I'm intrigued by their little experiment.

They keep dropping new-ish content, and it seems to

1)Get people talking about the game again
2)Going back to try it out

Look how busy people were testing out the inkbrush over the weekend.

The locked on-disc maps (there's 4 by my count) included at launch could have helped the game's reception. Instead, the reviews' most common complaint is the lack of content (maps and map rotation, namely). That's my problem. I'm already tired of the game - 3 map rotations and nearly double the maps at launch would have done wonders for me, personally.

Then why didn't you say this firsthand?

I completely understand what you're saying (and somewhat agree on a few points), but the "yay for locked on-disc content" comment just felt so forced and only appeared as squid bait.

I don´t miss having more maps, really. All maps are masterfully designed, I´ve been playing the game nonstop since release and everyday I´m finding new things to try on the maps. When you change your weapon more possibilities open up and you have to "relearn" each map again. I only play in ranked now so that helps because I get 2 maps per rotation, so when a new rotation comes it feels as fresh content. But people mixing game modes may get tired because you are always repeating maps even through different rotations.

Here's a picture of another new map featured in the JP Splatfest trailer. No info on when it's coming though...

A Sniper/Charger paradise.
No place for a roller here.

Short attention spans is exactly why the maps and weapons are being released continually. Obviously they'd have to plan ahead to enable a new map/weapon every week after launch so, yes, the assets are on disc.

I think it's fair to say that if some people are already bored with the single player campaign, multiplayer, almost 30 initial weapons, two new DLC weapons, a new mode (Splat Zones), and a new stage (Port Mackerel) released just since the May 29 launch (today is June 10), then Nintendo made the right call doing the content drip feed.

If they'd unlocked more at launch those same people would have merely dabbled in everything then claimed boredom still.

Forgive me, I had just woken up when I made that first post.

Good points. I think my problem stems from the fact that the "2 maps per 4 hours" thing has always rubbed me the wrong way. The idea that these maps were on the disc the entire time, just waiting there while I'm playing the same 5 maps over and over did not sit well with me.

It's an interesting experiment, for sure. The inkbrush did bring me back.. for a single game (I sucked with it :( ).

Sweet. While the game could use more maps, it's not a deal breaker and Nintendo is obviously working on it.

There's supposed to be a map pack later this year too right?

Guess I won't be playing the FFXV demo tonight either

and lol is this same argument going to happen every time a new stage comes out?

Don't forget how we're fully aware of the content upcoming beforehand and isn't being hidden from us or us being straight up lied too.
Yup, Nintendo were quite open about holding back more complex stages and restricting rotations to allow people to learn the maps and strategies properly.

Yeah, I get that. But it's early days yet. By tomorrow there will be seven maps enabled and at the current rate nine might be enabled by the end of June. When they switch to three per rotation, six will be available to play between Splat Zones and Turf Wars so you'll have more variety. (The downside is longer Callie/Marie news...it's a good thing I think they're charming :P)

The Japan Splatfest trailer showed 2 additional maps (Bluefin Depot and Camp Triggerfish), in addition to Kelp Dome. Wonder if they are going to be released just as the Splatfest starts?

Both of those maps have been revealed in pre release content and thus are likely coming this month but neither were in the splatfest trailer. That trailer had kelp dome, which we're getting tomorrow, and the vertical focused tall building stage.

Kelp Dome...good lord. You better not use rollers. Thing is open and its hard to hold any position for long. Go for aerospray, things with seekers, and if you can get it bubbler special or chargers with echolocator. Its chaotic and you cannot pin anything down. Don't hope for that. Aerospray is the easiest. Fast, mobile, lets you cover ground at low consumption and that matters.

This is not a board for my squelcher or inkbrush.
