What's the benefit of them stretching out the game for that long? This isn't a subscription based game.

To keep a healthy playing userbase. Doing so can keep people talking about the game, and help it have legs.
If it was just game now + new big content patch X months from now, then people would stop playing this game well before the patch comes out and move on to other things.
Trickling out content keeps people interested and invested, if done well.

The ranked battle meter is almost as rigged as the Potatometer for Portal 2.

Also can anyone tell me the point of map rotations? Like... why is this in the game?

As opposed to getting more lukewarm reviews at launch because it doesn't have enough content? Please.

Nintendo does things their own way but still it takes some huge leap of faith to decide that your game sales are better served by getting less glowing reviews at launch and instead thinking that peppering your game content across months would drive more sales. This isn't a F2P game either, sales are usually front loaded.

Well either that or Nintendo has nothing big in NA for the summer.

NA isn't the whole world. They have other games during summer for other regions. But yes they totally rushed launch and weren't able to make more than 5 maps in two years!
Reviews weren't lukewarm at all.

Game has been out for three days and they let normal people (those who haven't put 20+ hours in this yet in this small timeframe) enjoy their time and unlock weapons.

We're getting ranked mode this week.
You people are insane.

The tank filling up is total BS though, yes.

The reviews were fine though with the amount of content it has.
I mean what else do you think is the reason for trickling out free content if not to keep people engaged and playing?
Look at the pain brush. They've already been showing it off in video and stuff at least a month ago. Yet it's not at launch. It's free DLC at a later date.
Why do you think they are doing Splat Fests? More stuff just to keep people playing.

Yeah I'd imagine while the diehard Nintendo fans will stick around for all the content updates (like me) the majority of people will just be dissapointed and lose interest before they start coming out

The only benefit to winning is 300 points, which personally, I don't believe is enough to favour defensive play. In this game mode, I feel fast and aggressive is the key.
Not true. If you win a few times in a row, you get "so hawt" status and earn 1400 "moneys" from Judd.
I forget what money is called here.
Also, 300 points is around 25% of an above average score.

Not to mention that not playing to win is against the spirit of the game, and hurts the team as a whole. That is 1200 points (distributed amongst four players) that you are taking away.

It's crazy how they even did it all around the Inkling typography. Most people won't even see the back of this box, and hell most devs wouldn't even bother to put something like that there, and yet Nintendo still did it.

To be fair the texture work was most likely done way before the respective designers decided on the box's final placement in the hub.

I dunno, maybe I'm quick to be optimistic, but I'd be that most people, after having just paid 60-65 bucks for a brand-new at launch relatively unknown game would be willing to stick with it for a while, partially because they know there's a lot more content coming on down the line.

As the game grows and is out for more than 2 days maybe that's when more casual players will pick up a copy, at which point there will be tons of content at the ready.

(Not that 2 maps and one game mode prevented me from playing from level 1 to level 13 in 2 days and having a blast)

Unlocked the Dual Charger...

...I didn't like losing my InkStrike at first, but the fact I can help my team out with the Echolocator is decent enough!

And the decreased range, but added rate of fire? A dream come true!

And on the DLC front, I would hope they are free because I have bad memories of Halo Map DLC where you pay £5 and never get to play the DLC maps in a rotation...or, which applies to this game, you have to search for longer in a DLC Playlist.

Weapons you should charge for £2 for 1, £10 for the set maybe. But not maps.

Yes, but Nintendo love their Slow-Burners like Smash and Mario Kart which just sell for years since they ain't annualized.

jesus it feels like I kill 2 guys and then a third guy always pops up and stabs me before I have a chance to get new ink or confirm where I am. Jesus! This game's on a whole different level on gaf servers

I wonder if we'll eventually get a layered map where one section of the map is directly above or covering a lower section... I noticed today that the inkstrike extends below the floor of the map so it got my thinking.

MK8 sold something like 20% of the current install base during the first week.

Yes it does have some effect, but the amount of users you gain is small compared to having glowing reviews at launch. In terms of a purely business move it doesn't make sense in my opinion. I think it's better for engagement and gameplay rather than sales.

What isn't happening? A lot of the cons in reviews mention the lack of content.

Word of mouth, ads and mindshare are more important than review scores especially when metacritic is 8.1.

I don't know exactly how much effect scores have on sales (and I don't think anyone does), but people reading reviews will read that the game isn't rich in content.

Seriously sometimes it feels like I'm playing against bots when returning to random after a few hours of full GAF rooms.

Well we are getting at least 9 maps for free.

I could see them selling weapon packs along with a few pieces of gear and maybe an extra mode or something, I definitely can't see them selling maps

Spraying ink on walls doesn't count, and neither does inking areas that are already inked in your colour! You'll see your points accumulate in the top right as you ink.

I'm doing neither of that, have played this game for 20 hours trying to be as efficient as possible, but still usually get around 600-700 per game with the splattershot (not including the winning bonus). Sometimes upper 700's if I get really lucky. Is that normal? I really don't see how I could be more efficient.

I'm not sure what you are going on with reviews. It got good reviews.
Nor do I understand what you mean by not an F2P game. Nintendo's bigger IPs are typically NOT front loaded. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc sell more after the fact.
Also you need to consider the used games market, which is especially huge in Japan. People will trade in their games after they get bored, then new players will just buy used copies instead of new copies. Having free DLC or other bonuses after release is a common practice to keep people from selling their game right away.

Don't misunderstand. I win the vast majority of my games. I made points why I don't think a defensive 'hold middle' strategy is not affective, aside from my talking about the rewards you get. I always play to win.
However, the current game mode available to us is casual. Not ranked. The entire point of the game is to paint as much as you can to get points, it's why literally the only thing you are rewarded for is painting unpainted or enemy areas. So rather than try holding an area, I prefer to go into enemy territory and paint as much as I can. This results in me getting more points than I would defending, and I still win most of the time.

You just have to find a weapon that works for you. I don't think 700 minus winning bonus is bad at all. Unless you are dominating, that is a totally normal score.
Some weapons are better for killing, some weapons for painting. You have to find what works for you.

seriously that was like playing minesweeper sometimes, i was so scared to go to the top of the tower, half the players felt like they had that cod4 drop a nade on death perk lol.

pissed too cos it felt like I was often doing well, i'd get mobbed and die, and i'd look at the map and the entire map was the enemy colour :<

In that case you should always order
T-shirts
from Spyke due to there being way more of them. I know an extra one per day is not much and it means it will take a while in any case.

Also go to pick up your order from Spyke after buying today's selection. I believe if you already own something something he will sell a random item you don't have.

In that case, it makes
5 products per day, so you will finish in 19 days all of it... but Spyke resell really expensive. I order a white shirt, and he tried sell it for 5000... and the same day was the shirt in the shop for 1300 or 2300 or something like that, so double price :|
Btw, I read that when u have the same one, you replace yours for the Spykes one, but I havent confirmed myself... not bying anything from him yet after seen this 5000 shirt XD

I played this over the weekend at a friend's house and basically what I got from it was that it's super fun but NOT worth 60 dollars in any capacity.

700+winning bonus would put you at 1000 which is good.
You can still do better though.
