Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

"Sphincter Cell" oh that's rich. Right up there with using the dollar sign in "M$". Witty as FUCK.

Anyways, despite my new "rental-only" policy for all new titles, SC will be earning a purchase from me. The single player campaign has never let me down, and PT's multiplayer was a lot of fun. Between this and MGS, my stealth needs are fully satisfied.

m0dus, you're so predictable. :lol

May I ask how you guys got "promotional copies" of the game? Store managers or something?
I run a gaming site (some would call it a xbox fansite) so I get a few promotional copies from time to time :)

Ok just back from a 2 hour coop session. In one word: WOW
It's been a long time since I've had that much fun on Live. Playing this with a good friend is of course a big help :)
...

SC:CT has Live coop?

I would like to see some GC screenshots, the pics they have on IGN for the GC are suspect. I can find the same exact pics on the PS2 site. Dissapointing knowing the GC can do normal mapping through the indirect texturing unit.

Those pc shots look drool inducing, wish I had a capable pc.

PC gaming is just so damn expensive though. I have a plenty capable PC, but damn - I don't know if I am going to continue that expensive route.

Can some of you guys post your live game tags, or PM them to me. I'd love to play this game and others on live with you all.

Well, you can get our Gamer Tags from our profile, but mine is

I don't think it's Sam thats the bad shot.
He misses when you stand perfectly still, and aim directly at something. My complaints are hardly out of the ordinary....they have followed the franchise since its inception. Though this is the first time I've seen someone trying to explain it away by saying "You just have bad aim HAR HAR".
I wonder how many people who play FPS's have actually fired guns in real life.
The scope aim is all over the place in the game. In real life it's hard to stay perfectly steady, but you aren't going to be swinging up and down drunkenly like in SC. Metal Gear has the same problem -- you turn into a total spaz as soon as you start looking down a scope.

I never had a problem. Like I said before, take a look at how the laser ever so slightly moves in PT. Depending on how far you are from the target, you just might miss. That's how it is in real life. No one can hold perfectly still, so when the target is real small, it might be real hard to hit. I also noticed in the beginning that I wasn't aiming for the right spot. I was aiming at reflected light and not the light itself. That could have been part of your problem as well. If Sam is such a bad shot, why do I hit the lights I want to shoot out far more often than not?

The farther you zoom, the more exaggerated the swinging is going to be. That's just the reality of the situation. I don't think you turn into a total spaz as soon as you start looking down the scope.

Seriously, have you ever fired a rifle with a scope before? Or fired a real hand gun? More specifically, while doing target practice?

Why should my personal, real-life capabilities with a weapon even be an issue? TSam Fisher is supposed to be a government trained super-agent, and he's missing bulbs and headshots that I purposefully line up. Those guys are suposed to be able to hit tiny targets from large distances. The bulbs are not so much an issue with the EMP now, but it's still frustrating when bullet's whiz by a guy's ear or something.

The zoom on your main rifle is only like 2x or 4x..the swinging shouldn't be that crazy. If anything it should at least mellow out after you've had the rifle up for a couple seconds, since it usually takes that long to get the right feel.

There's really no need for GCN screenshots as it looks identical to the PS2 version. There is no normal mapping or anything.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I thought I remember you totally dissing the SC series, so why you are concerned about it is baffling. And it's not about your personal real-life capabilities. I ask the question because I think if you have actually fired real firearms, you would understand better why the game is the way it is.

Use the left trigger. Problem solved.

You can hold the left trigger to hold your breath and stop the swinging.

Edit: Curses!

I don't mind an accuracy penalty if I am moving or swinging the gun around, but if I'm crouched in the dark perfectly still I shouldn't have to worry about making a headshot on a slowly moving target.

I know you can steady the scope aim -- I just think that when it's initially swinging around prior to breath adjustment, it's exaggerated.

It's called gameplay. Splinter Cell isn't meant to be a 100% realistic game. If anything, the game designer wants you to be as stealty as possible, taking guards by surprise and grab them from behind, and not sniping all of them from a distance.

Well, I guess we will just have to disagree on this point.

yeah, probably the only real complaint. Oh, and the guards death animation were horrible. They'd swing thier head foward slightly then jump backwards :lol hillerious

If you think that the limits put on accuracy are good, then that's fine. Denying that the limits are there (eg: you're just a bad shot) was the only thing I really took issue with. ;) Sam's missed shots are really only a small bit of the game, though. It just usually baffled me why they did it.

Dr_Cogent said:
Have you ever fired a rifle? Also, in the game you can hold your breath so your aim is steadied. That's how professional snipers do it. I like it this way. It makes the game far more challenging.

The farther you are zoomed in on a target, the more it's going to appear to be squirrelly.

*edit* LOL, those were all real quick replies there guys.

I wonder how many people who play FPS's have actually fired guns in real life.

Yep, actually I have. I used to own a Remington 30-06. I wasn't a marksman or anything, but my aim wasn't bad. I totally forgot about the L trigger trick.

I'll let you know as soon as I've reached it. I'm still in level 3 since I've pretty much only played coop since a few days :)

I've completed the fourth mission yesterday, and yes I enjoyed it :-) It's more "classical" if matched with the previous ones (being the third, the bank infiltration, my favourite so far), but I enjoyed it very much expecially because I played this one too in total-stealth mode, and I achieved 100% completion for the first time, so I was very very satisfied at the end :D

Haters: Booger off. Sam Fisher will sneak into your mom's basement at night and SLIT your fucking THROAT.

First he'll tell you you suck, though, in that manly Michael Ironsides voice of his.

Michael Ironsides. Man, that brings me back. Anyone remember the television show V?

I think MI is the perfect voice for Sam Fisher. He's a real bad ass sounding guy.

Some people hate it that bad ;).

I don't get the Splinter Cell hate. Just because you aren't into the game doesn't make it a bad one.

As far as stealth action goes, I would bet if you took polls, SC would come out the leader over MGS.

I'll play a coop session on xbox live tonight, I'll post my impressions if anybody is interested.

I have to say I was jealouas when I went to my dashboard and saw you play. You luck y son-of-a-gun. Where's the impressions!! ;)

oh yeah, i forgot. 9.6 is the new 10. review scales should only go from 5 to 9.6... why? because no game is ever perfect, blah blah.

i don't really know why- but i love this series. i really, really do. maybe even more than mgs... i even read the splinter cell book (not written by tom clancy) over christmas break to tied me over till CT is out. the book was shitty, but gosh if i don't feel like i am closer to sam than ever before. sam and me are like this *crosses fingers*. the xbox demo was awesome and now i don't have to do any complicated maneuvers to scissors legs in hallways. so simple, just press "Y". yippeeeee!

Nah, I'm not saying that at all. 10's should be handed out, that whole "10 can only mean perfect" thing some people spout is pure horseshit. I was just poking a little fun at the fact 1UP gave out two this week. Easy, killer. :)

I'm now half way through the 4th level. At first I did not like it because I though I could not use any killing moves against the
national guard
but then after some frustration I tried using one and it just stuns them without using the knife so everything is perfect. I'm not a big fan of the
infrared cameras
because I like being able to go to one place to another without having to worry about them, but otherwise it's a very nice level. Gotta love the
lift going up while you are mid way to the top of the building
Great game so far, thank god for quick save :)

How does the quicksave effect the game mechanics? I fear it might make the game too easy? As frustrating as the checkpoint system was, it made the game more dificult and more rewarding somewhat.

I was waiting for someone to say that :)
For me it's simple. I would never have finished even the first level of the game without the quick save. I'm horrible at stealth games and I never reliably manage to pass/grab or kill a guard so the checkpoint system made the game simply impossible for me.
Without counting all my retries (and there are many) a level takes me about one hour and half to finish, at least level 2 and 3, and of course that's by not trying to be stealthy or playing for a good score at the end, at the normal difficulty level.
A checkpoint system is a good way to add difficulty and/or length to a game that lacks it, but I would not say SC:CT lacks any of this. Honestly I'm not the best to judge this since I simply could not play SC1 or 2, but I do not think the quick save feature makes the game any easier or shorter.

Hm well, are there still checkpoints in the game or is it just quicksave? I didn't have that much trouble with SC until the last couple of levels where it got ridiculously hard in some places and you had to go long stretches without a save. A more balanced checkpoint system would be the perfect solution for me, since I know that I will tend to abuse the quicksave system..

I love playing a game without being spotted and knocking everyone out without killing them. Now I wouldn't call myself skilled but I'm a massive fan of the stealth genre and I have unending patience.

Is that possible in the stages that you've played, are there any instances where you HAVE to kill someone in order to progress forward?

Nope, I just finished the first 4 missions and I don't think I HAD to kill anyone. I did kill everyone I could though :D
