Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

One thing I love doing is making some noise behind a door, and wait for the guard to come near (using the infrared vision) and bash the door. Nice, easy and funny way to get rid of a guard :) Especially in the first levels where the guards are all scared.

Click the right stick..I believe. Does anybody know how many levels this game has?

No, I mean zooming in while using the scope. Sorry, I wasn't specific enough.

There doesn't appear to be a way to do it. The last two games had it. Maybe I am missing something, but I checked the manual and tried every button possible, and I still can't zoom beyond 1.5X

Press up on the d-pad.

I have, it turns on the EMF view mode.

Have you actually sucessfully done it yourself? Or are you just remembering how it was in the previous games.

Maybe I am just losing it.

Wait, is there some sort of attachment I need for this shit?

I'll have to spend more time with it later today. I think I don't have the sniper attachment on or something. Fuck if I know though.

I coldn't resist this in the co-op training mission. When you vault over the wall and have to open the door for your partner. I waited until my pal was right in front of the door, then bashed him with it. It was mean and immature, but I just couldn't resist the urge. He of course was pissed and got his revenge later.

This is one of the BEST co-op games I've ever played. BlimBlim, we pulled that double execution of the guys sitting on the couch watching the soccer game. This game is SO MUCH fun with two people. I love how we split up and my pal was trying to talk to me. The enemy was closing in and I tried to whisper to him to shut up, but he heard and came looking. You can set up some nice game play strategies as well.

Does anybody no how to send the text meesages that are described in them game manual. In times of imposed radio silience there is supped to be a way to communicate with your pal, via the in game text messaging system. I couldn't figure it out. But then again I was up pretty late and sleepy.

Why the hell isn't this game 480p?
The back of the box says it isn't, but I can assure you that the single player and co-op modes are 480p *and* widescreen compatible. Versus mode is also in progressive, but no widescreen.

I'm pretty sure that for the 480p checkbox to be marked, the entire game has to be in widescreen 480p, not just a few modes.

So is anyone having severe framerate/slowdown problems in co-op? Even in the relatively simplistic training level? I have a feeling that it was network related, but it was annoying enough to keep me from playing for longer than a half hour.

My brother just called me complaining the the game appears to lock up momentarily sometimes. Anyone else get this in the single player? He said once it completely froze and he had to reboot his Xbox.

I've noticed when the music kicks in, sometimes the game hitches for a second or two.

You're right. It looks like there's no zoom option anymore. That kinda sucks.

Epmode, we played co-op yesterday for a few hours and had severe framerate issues.

More multiplayer impressions from yours truly:

Co-Op
There are times when I think this mode is broken. It didn't register our last save on story mode, so instead of doing half a mission over again, me and my buddy decide to do the next mission on "mission" mode. Mission mode is the same thing but you can't save (only "quicksave", which is just a temporary checkpoint save thing) - WTF? This was fine, until the game froze while loading after we died. Fuck that.

Co-op is incredibly fun while it works, but it has glaring issues that need to be resolved, mostly from a technical standpoint (terrible framerate when things are heating up.. the game slows down to a crawl, and the whole saving thing, not to mention the game locking up in the first place). It's too bad because the gameplay is a lot of fun.

Versus
Now this is where it's AT, son! The new map Aquarius is fucking awesome. Playing as spies or mercs feels identical to Pandora but with a few changes:

Spies:
Your default crouching stance is lower to the ground.
Tripping off an alarm anywhere on the map disables ALL objectives (could use confirmation on this, but i'm pretty sure that's what happened), not just the ones around you.
New objectives, such as planting bombs, besides regular-ass neutralization. Very cool.

Mercs:
Spies appear to take more bullets to be killed.
You can only have 3 mines down at a time, I think..
The gas mask.. very useful when in a cloud of smoke, but perfectly implemented: it only works for a limited time, you have to remember to activate it at the right time, and it takes up a lot of your vision.

There's also a 'strategic map' for both teams that gives the names of each room. Very useful on the new map, Aquarius (the only one I've played besides a quick round of Deftec).

The value of this game is unbelievable, completley worth $50. There's just so much to it.

anyone play the PS2 version yet? Is there any significant differences in the ps2 version aside from the expected graphical insufficiencies (compared to Xbox)?

The PS2 version does not have any of the new gadgets in versus mode, nor does it have the new objectives (it only has neutralization). This info is based on a PS2 IGN preview, not sure if that has changed..

Two missions down on hard, knocked out everyone without being detected once, had a two alarmed guard stages since I had to distract them with a bottle, and received 100% on both counts.

Damn I love this game, now if I could only get the girlfriend to play more co-op with me, I'd be in heaven! :)

Not quite. It is just the ones around you. On some of the maps, there are several objectives real close to eachother, so it seems like all of them are shutdown, but its only the ones nearest to you.

And yes, you can only lay 3 mines at a time as a Merc. I'm pretty sure its also only 3 spy traps at a time as well. Kind of a bummer. That gas mask completely fucks up a lot of the spy strategies though. It will be interesting to see which side people can exploit more this time. I'm thinking the mercs will usually win since they're so tough now.

I prefer the actual gameplay of the SC series to MGS. Mainly because you feel like you are more in control of what you're doing. It's annoying in MGS3 to have to go to a screen to change your camo, weapons, and what not all the time while being restricted to horrible camera angles. Running around and having to go into first person constantly to see where everything is really pissed me off.

agreed. MGS seriously needs to drop that fucking camera already. at least they got rid of the map that showed enemy locations though, one of my other biggie complaints i had with the series.

Have you ever fired a rifle? Also, in the game you can hold your breath so your aim is steadied. That's how professional snipers do it. I like it this way. It makes the game far more challenging.

The farther you are zoomed in on a target, the more it's going to appear to be squirrelly.

*edit* LOL, those were all real quick replies there guys.

I wonder how many people who play FPS's have actually fired guns in real life.

actually, not true. snipers do not hold their breath. early on in the military you are taught to shoot at the bottom of your exhale. i was a candidate for sniper school and was almost talked into going after doing so well in my shooting qualifications (39 out of 40). holding your breath is a big no-no and is a problem most people come into the military thinking they're supposed to do. it's especially bad if it's already a habit.

breath slow, remain calm, take your time but be quick, shoot at the bottom of your breath and squeeze gently with the tip of your index finger. :)

p.s. Cog, we gotta co-op baby! i'm gonna send off for this game with my Gamefly account. we gonna rock some co-op! :)

p.p.s. and since i feel like bragging some.... I also got "Top Gunner" in my MOS, 11 Hotel - Anti-Tank Tow Missile. Although that is a lot different, and much more difficult.... shooting at tanks and having to "track" them with a wire guided missile! hehe. :D Someone should put that into one of their games. The upcoming Battlefield 2 would be perfect for it. I actually think that I was so good and got Top Gunner because I was such a hard core gamer and it sharpened my reflexes and ability to concentrate and track them. Seemed just like a game to me back then.

While I haven't played online yet (single player rocks!) I just want to chime in with how great the game's sound design is. Major props to Ubisoft for securing such a great composer for the game's soundtrack.

This framerate problem you are experiencing is 100% network-related. The co-op mode, unlike most online versus games, works in a very synchronised way. You will never see another spy just "jump" to another location when lag occurs, instead, the game freezes and waits for the other player. If your connection is crap (which sounds to be the case), then you will experience severe framerate problems.

The ideal thing to do is to not be behind firewalls and have a direct connection to the internet (no routers, no network, no nothing, your Xbox hooks up directly to your modem).

If another machine on your network or router is sucking bandwidth (ie. filesharing programs running on your PC (or other malicious programs that you might not even know of)), then of course you're going to lag.

Couple of my friends and myself all bought this game today and ALL OF US are getting major framerate dips/lag/slowdown/whatever in the co-op campaign. Almost to the point where it's unplayable. Versus mode appears to be fine though.

why on earth would they do something so fucking retarded? holy shit that is stupid!

And when playing, are any of the two players behind either a router, a firewall, or a network of some kind?

If you can assuredly answer no to the above, then I'm very, very surprised.

But either way, it's a network-related problem of some kind.

Someone answer some questions here. I played through the first level and only shot and killed one guy. But, the scoring at the end said I killed seven guys. I think that killed my score because I only got an 81%. So, do the ring foil and sticky shockers now kill the guys? When you grab a guy from behind and knock him out are you now killing him? I'm really confused as to how I killed seven guys.

siamesedreamer said:

What trigger did you press? R or L? Because R is a deadly back breaker. That's the only explanation I can see from what you said.

Also, I don't know what's causing the framerate dips, but they are a huge suspense killer because we've noticed that they always occur when some bad guys are around. So, its like "Oh, framerate dip! Now where are the bad guys?".

Hmmm, well this site talks about holding your breath :)

Anyway, yeah - we gotta hook up eventually. My bro and I did, but then he got kicked from the game. I dunno, I think this game is kinda buggy personally. Whats with the hitching when the music kicks in in single player? Not cool. :P

I think I'm going to have to disagree. I'd say you were right if the framerate was ALWAYS bad, but it only happens when enemies are around and its like clockwork. Me and Siamesedreamer have played through 3 of the 5 co-op levels now (incl. training) and we only experience slowdown/framerate when an enemy is nearby. Like he said, it really kills the element of surprise because you KNOW you have to start looking around for an enemy once the framerate dips.

It pisses us off, but I know I'll still play anyway because co-op is just so fucking kickass. Even with the slowdown being as bad as it is (and its terrible) I still have a good time. Its just unfortunate cuz it could have been so much better.

Game is some seriously hot stuff. I haven't played online yet, but the single player is absolutely amazing. Big improvement from PT.

We were experiencing some severe framerate drop when there was a lot of action going on in the Seoul mission. Too bad because the game is pretty fun, but really pushing the xb to its limits :|

Can anyone help me to finish the fourth level in Single Player (Manhattan Garment District)? I'm looking for the extraction point, which appears to be inside an
elevator shaft, but I've literally been all over the map multiple times and cannot find where to go.

My pleasure.

My tag is "luvaluva". Add me to your buddylist on Live and I'll do the same. Id like to meet up with you and anyone else from these boards. I need to build up my list, I hate playing with random people.

I tried adding you but it kept saying tag wasn't found. It's "l" as un lowercase "L" right?

My Xbox Live name is: TekunoRobby

I played a little co op yestrday night, for the first time

I got disconnected twice.

Two times i drew the gun and wasn't able to put it away, it happened to my mate too. I had to switch to sk launcher and shoot before i was able to put the weapon away..but maybe that was some kind of 'rule' we didn't understand

While playing the coop tutorial, the part where one spy must hack a computer while hanging to a rope held by the other player...
At first i was holding the rope, but my mate didn't understand how to hack the computer so we tried to switch roles, but when I took place near the hole, highlighted "start action" or whatever in the interaction menu nothing was happening for my friend; no option to complete the action was visible for him. It only worked if he was the one starting the action.

All within a 40 mins game.. Is it me or this game is quite bugged ?

The President will have puppies if he finds out we're doing this.
That Lambert quote made me laugh, no it isn't a spoiler.

SonnyBoy I've tried both of the names you posted but none work, it kept saying it was an invalid name. Try adding me whenever you get the chance.

Word of warning for those well versed in the stealth genre:
I've done 4 missions and I managed a 100% rating every time. Never had to use a single gadget or fire a weapon and I managed to take down every NPC non-lethally. I'm playing or Normal which so far has been exceedingly easy. For the rest of the game I'm notching it up to hard.

How bad is the framerate is each of the game modes?

The frame rate can be a problem in ...
the second part of Seoul(after the plane goes down), In the market st. where you face the first tank. Also, if you thrown in a grenade in each tank you see in the second part of seoul you complete a secret objective. I won't say more than that

Rappelling can be either player but hangover is 1st player up top, 2nd player on wire. Several times we've done both in all the levels and it seems to be the rule, not the bug.

I got this game on a whim after getting an assload of trade-in at Gamerush. I'm very pleasantly surprised. I skipped Pandora but am really liking this one.

Ugh, which means pay-to-play. Love co-op but I hate being nickle and dimed for buggy&unfinished games. Guess I'll have to wait til it drops in price to make up for the DLC cost.

Yes, i think i didn't explain that well..
First he was the one rappeling, then we switched position, i tried to start the action so that i would be the one hanging to the rope, but when i did he had no option to complete the action. I started it but he wasn't allowed to continue. Then we restarted the match and it worked just fine for both
