Splinter Cell PSP first look

I'm sure he's talking about the PSP version, which I've played through myself (and well, I wrote a review so there's one available at least...but not in English). It has a fair amount of bugs and graphical glitches, it's not a straight port of the console version (even though some earlier screens released led one to believe otherwise) - it's a watered-down port in more than just graphics. The controls felt weird (expected, but still). It also took me like 4 hours to finish. Such a let-down in many ways, as I was expecting a straight port of the console version with slightly worse graphics.
 
According to UBI, not only is this a brand new game (not a remake!) in the Splinter Cell series, it's also due for Q1 release in Europe. I wouldn't hold my breath for that one.

Yeah, I just checked on GFAQs, looks like tons of stuff was removed from it in translation, and it's seems like some of the most interesting levels were removed.

I think we'll actually start seeing 3 tiers for multiplatform R&D in 2006...

Low grade~ DS/Mobile
Middle grade~ PS2/PSP/Revolution
High grade~ 360/PS3/PC

With saying Nerding for Nintendo, this is the best freaking post I've seen from a Nintendo fan EVER!!!

And I think you are 100% on the money. We all know with 333Mhz the PSP will be able to do what the PS2 can do. I'm not quite sure I would put the Rev in the same list as the PSP though.
 
this game isnt using 333mhz, it's just been in development for quite a while (it was reported to be in development since e3 2004 along with PoP).

Just like GTA, the more technically demanding games require more time in development.

Not sure if most publishers see that as profitable.
 
I don't understand why people keep wondering if Sony has 'unlocked' the HW for devs now. While that is certainly possible, it is not the only rational explanation. The jump in graphics seems consistent with what has happened on most consoles at this point in its life. The Splinter Cell team is certainly known for stellar graphics, so you can think of this as the PSP's MGS2.

The PSP is not a miniature PS2. While it isn't far off in overall power, it is a totally different architecture that has it’s own learning curve like any other system. It is entirely possible devs are now starting taking advantage of what it has to offer – especially given that this is a relatively big-budget game from a talented team.

Historically, portables were pretty simple architectures and their games were created with much smaller teams and budgets relative to their console counterparts. As such, there wasn’t the same sort of SW generational leaps we generally see on home systems. With the PSP, and to a lesser extent the DS, this is no longer the case – at least not to the same level it was in the past. Engine improvements will be fairly dramatic over the course of their lives.

But do we know how many units the Splinter Cell: Essentials game needs to sell to be profitable? Does anybody really think that in the future PSP games worldwide can match the sales of Xbox titles?

I think Revolution is a gray area... we don't know what it can deliever just yet. But I agree, putting on the same level as a handheld is absurd.
 
We know you hate your PSP nick - all you ever post about is the ghosting, brick, PSX graphics etc, but cant you at least wait to see a decent screen-shot of the game in action before turning on the hate valve?

I see no reason to hype a machine that has not yet delivered on anything that it promised.

And no. I don't hate my PSP. I hate it when people proclaim the "next big thing" and then said thing falls short on expectations.

How has it NOT delivered on anything yet? Can't you play MP3's, watch movies, and play games with PS2 like graphics? Have you ever been on the internet with it yet? Ever listened one of your favorite PODCAST on your PSP yet?

Yup. I've done it all with the little thing. RSS feeds, podcasting, surfing the net, mp3's... but I want G-A-M-E-S. And at this point, the only games people really care about are

1) GTA
2) Lumines
3) Ridge Racers

You would be hard pressed to get any other "casual" players to name a game they adored other than those three (Burnout and SOCOM are a big maybe). So far, I've been so underwhelmed by this little machines, and I'm starting to regret purchasing my second one a few months ago.

I'm also *very* jaded that I still have unsuccessfully converted a good looking .avi onto my PSP. :(

Come on man you are on your second PSP and you are still complaining? To add to your list Burnout, MLB 2006, and Madden 2006 were good games too. And why does the PSP software sales outpace the DS software sales in NA?
 
Still 222 Mhz eh? What did 333 Mhz mode do to Ubisoft's other PSP game, Prince of Persia? It would be great to get that smooth 60 fps jump like Wipeout and GTA:LCS.
 
While that does look very good, i get the impression that the models are still really quite blocky, in general the PSP seems to have alot of quite low poly models.
I dont understand why this is generally the case, seems like its technically able to do better, as while the lighting, and areas can be pretty impressive, the poly count of pratically anything seems to be quite drastically lower in comparison to PS2 versions, etc.

You bought another psp (even tho being disappointed) and can't convert an avi to your psp....do you take the short bus to school?

This is due to less usable memory and lower memory bandwidth than PS2.

Judging by these screens, the game looks better than just about anything on the PSP, an thus deserves praise. There's nothing really to spin about it.

Not to imply all these platforms are exactly the same, I'd just expect multiplatform engines shared between them to be basically "on level". I think with Revolution we're more likely to see upscaled PS2/PSP engines rather than downscaled PS3/360 engines. It might be similar to Dreamcast in some respects, usually taking the base last gen engine and upping the resolution, modeling, effects, texturing, etc.

I get the feeling that you haven't played an N64 game is quite a while...

I suppose it might be more accurate to say that they resemble something you might find on the Dreamcast. That is, they display more detail than what you'd find on the N64 or PlayStation...but fall short of what is more common on the current console platforms.

I'd expect its probably an easy way for devs to try to optimize performance since, on a smaller screen, its easier to get away with fewer polys on models and still maintain a close approximation to console equivalent models.

The new Syphon Filter game looks really amazing, I gotta get a PSP for that for sure. Splinter cell looks good too but I think I will get the PC version

They're not doctored, they're just screen buffer grabs or dev kit exports, just like those huge 1200x900 images that Sony puts out sometimes. It's the game, but there's a distortion of scale (and also, depending on how they're output, some effects or textures end up getting mooked in the final display but look great in stills).

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and SC: Essentials really show off the PSP's power. Kojima HAS to make a "for real" MGS now.
 
Damn the PSP is looking like a beast for 2006. I wonder how Gran Turismo is going to look.
