This could finally be the year that notoriously tempestuous Rashad McCants leads Tar Heel Nation to the NCAA title. North Carolina is paced by a strong junior class that includes McCants and fellow teammates Sean May and Raymond Felton -- all of whom have talent and experience -- thus prompting Sports Illustrated to elect the Tar Heels as its preseason No. 1.

To check out North Carolina's scouting report -- and the rest of SI's Top 20 -- click on any of the links below. Within each preview, you'll find speed ratings that take into account a squad's personnel and how vigorously its coach employs the running game.

Let the season begin ...

Actually, one of our awesome frosh's isnt going to get to play because his old AAU coach is being investigated by the NCAA.. from what I've heard no players are being implicated, but Coach Barnes wont play him just to be safe till this ends. Our season is going to depend heavily on some freshman showing up big, I figure we are sweet 16.

we play chaminade, then ya'll (assuming neither one of us forgets to show up to our first games).

hmmm Louisville could also play UNC in Hawaii, that would jumpstart this thread

Here's how I see the tourney playing out:

I don't quite understand how to do the consolation brackets, but that's how I think it' supposed to be.

Chaminade? Damn ... I thought you guys played Providence .. thats a cakewalk. And we'll take on the extremely overrated UNC.

BTW ... lets just recall 1997 Texas fans .... 3 pointer at the buzzer by Eric Johnson in the regular season to take the game to OT which we win .. then we knock you out of the tournament in a Sweet 16 blowout!

First tragedy, then farce.
thats seems about right, Texas and Stanford would play for 3rd place in that scenario and Tennesee and Chamade would play for last :p

I think Iowa will wind up 5th as well, which is really sad.. after the top 4 teams, there is a MASSIVE drop off.

Yeah, but thats back when we had everyones favorite drunk Tom Penders "coaching" our team to not play defense and releasing our athletes grades to the local media :lol

What do you call a Texas player with a NCAA championship ring?

A thief

:lol

Yeah, well enjoy the one sport your good at. I'll enjoy being a perinial top 25 team in every major sport.

*plus our womens team has rings*

The one sport? Oh you mean being ranked #8 in the nation in football and top 15 in basketball? Or our volleyball team that just swept through the conference undefeated and is also top 20? Right guy.

Thanks to no Ray Felton, Carolina chokes against Santa Clara. Ugh, god I hate this. And adding insult to injury, we dropped from #4 to #11 in the AP poll.

MWAHAHAHA

How about them overrated Cards huh? 76-71 to Iowa? Damn, that's a shame :lol

edit: BTW, yeah, guess I do have to fix that Maui bracket of mine :lol

I'm savoring this :D

Of course, with a loss to BYU, I will be ashamed to be a UNC fan, so hopefully, karma doesn't hit my team like it hit yours (to be fair, I think karma already hit us with a loss to Santa Clara, so there need not be more punishment :()

We've lost to a big ten team in season openers the last 3 years ... not surprising. Iowa is a helluva lot better than Santa Clara though. Watch and see, Iowa has a good shot of winning the Maui.

Fun fact of the day:

the only other two Roy Williams-coached teams that lost their opening games, the '90-91 and '01-02 Kansas Jayhawks, wound up in the Final Four.

Let's hope the trend continues :D

Some background on Pitino early season losses also, from somone at the Louisville board I hang out at, so no its not surprising we lost ... I was expecting a 2-1 record in the Maui:

2003-2004 - lost to Iowa in the opener, won the next sixteen games, and rose to #4 in the rankings.

2002-2003 - lost second game of the season to Purdue. won the next seventeen games, posted an 18-1 record, and rose to #2 in the rankings.

2001-02 - lost second game of the season to Oregon. won nine of the next ten.

AT KENTUCKY:

1996-97 - lost first game of the year to Clemson. won 19 of th next 20, finished 29-4 after the regular season and advanced to the ncaa tournament championship game.

1995-96 - lost the second game of the year to UMass. won the next 27 games before losing in the sec tournament championship game. won the national championship.

1994-95 - lost the third game of the year to UCLA. won 11 of the next 12 and 15 of the next 17. finished the season 25-4 and advanced to the elite eight.

1993-94 - lost the third game of the year to Indiana. won 16 of the next 18 and wound up earning a #2 seed in the ncaa tournament. if i remember correctly, they also lost an exhibition game this year.

And hey, at least we didn't lose to some team from the SWAC conference or some shit.

Texas lost to Iowa too ... is UNC next? Told you Iowa is no joke.

:)

Some stats for ya:

In the first half, UNC held teams to an avg of 29.7 pts while scoring 52.7 pts.
UNC outscored their competition by an average of 21.0 ppg.
UNC averaged 95.3 ppg during the tournament.

Hopefully they'll reclaim a top 10 spot in the polls after that sensational tournament run.

McCants with 28 in a win over Kentucky, 91-78. Kentucky never tied or had the lead, but made several runs before being shut down by the Heels. Kentucky had too much foul trouble to win the game IMO.

Pete Carroll Owns Me
Well Michigan played like crap today but beat an overrated Notre Dame team. Lack of guard dept is killing us. Joe Crawford and Malik Hairston can both go to hell.

Louisville faces Kentucky next week. Get your excuses ready guys.

"Of course we lost, this is Louisville's championship game."

"We'll still go farther in the tourney........until we face a C-USA team."

"Our Freshmen aren't ready yet."

"Wait til next year......."

How about, "Our center kept banging his head on the rim"? Have you seen that guy?

Tubby has a knack for developing inside players... Shag had the stability of a baby giraffe last year... :)

I can't imagine Pitino beating us again... but even if he does, UVEL still has to settle being little brother...

Watch out for those Texas Aggies! SI.com ranked them #10. Way too high as of right now...

I'm excited about the game against Texas Tech tonight, although a major let down wouldn't surprise me that much

McCants early foul trouble and Wake's 32-32 Free Throw performance were the keys that led to Wake winning. *sigh* Now everyone's gonna come talk about how the Heels are overrated.

Well, some people did seem to think UNC was unbeatable and were ready to annoint them national champs. But people still know UNC is a great team, and losing on the road to the #4 Wake is not a big surprise.
